- This article discusses the large-scale and world-encompassing aspirations of digital humanities and world literature and their methodological accordance with the analysis of literature in smaller languages and of texts understood in social, transnational, and gendered contexts. Are Digital Humanities and World Literature establishing themselves as fields utilizing analytical tools that are at odds with the aims and perspectives of feminist literary history and reception history as a part of literary history? We argue that gender research and theory is insufficiently developed in both computational literary history and World Literature. An unproblematic understanding of translations, canonization, English as a global language, and the use of large-scale computational methods and formalized interpretive models is in many cases not beneficial for the understanding of texts by women writers or from feminist perspectives. Drawing on feminist criticism of computational methods and arguments for specialized rather than generalized knowledge about literary history, we propose that digitization in some form, be it a bibliographical database or digitization of a corpus of texts, may be thought of as part of the research process in projects oriented towards gender and cultural exchange.

- Att "gå ut i fält" har länge fått beskriva en mängd metodiska praktiker inom flera olika vetenskapsområden. Det är dock fortfarande ganska ovanligt att forskare inom humaniora lämnar skrivbordets avgränsade landskap för mer handfasta studier på fältet. Denna antologi undersöker vad det innebär att kombinera traditionella humanistiska metoder med olika former av fältarbete. Förändras vår syn på forskningen och forskningsobjektet om vi bedriver fältstudier? Blir annorlunda kunskap möjlig och påverkar det i sin tur synen på humaniora som ett eget fält?

- Somewhere in the far north there is a secret underground well of fresh, cool water. When young Noria attains the title of tea master she inherits the secret of water and the responsibility for an underground network of fresh water distribution in a dusty, parched, insect-ridden, peripheral place on earth. Memory of Water is set in the near-future world where the access to fresh water is controlled by the military, while seawater levels have risen and contaminated fresh-water reserves. In this essay, I will read Emmi Itäranta’s novel Memory of Water as a work of world literature that subtly drags one’s imagination into an eerie zone of the familiar-unfamiliar. Dystopian low sci-fi at its best. The existence of cultural, linguistic and territorial borders is the paradoxical prerequisite for our understanding of integration, whether it is a question of European integration or integration of migrants in a new cultural setting. What would the world look like if most borders were obliterated? In reading Memory of Water, I will pay special attention to its lack of borders and the challenge it poses for the reader to not think in terms of borders. I will also demonstrate how the lack of borders, that is, the lack of borders that create alternative comparable units (e.g. nations) passivates people because there are no alternatives to strive for. Literature can in this case work as a test-site for possible futures. I will approach the novel from three perspectives. One, eco-cosmopolitan theory will be tried as a way of rethinking possible futures. Two, the established border-zone of the familiar and unfamiliar through near-translatable concepts, phenomena and material objects, the evoking of the unheimlich, will be discussed. Three, Rob Nixon’s concept of “slow violence” is introduced in an attempt to understand the psychology of the novel’s human beings. Initially, however, a few words about the novel as world literature.

- The idea of cultural borders forms imaginative and creative mental spaces for thinking about identity and otherness. Whether cultural borders are thought of as following linguistic, national, territorial or other officially drawn lines on political maps, or only as states of mind, their consequences and meanings are unpredictable. Historically and geopolitically, the Gulf of Finland, with Finland to the north, Russia to the east and Estonia to the south, has been a region not only of wars but also vigorous cultural and national negotiations. The cultural histories of Finland and Estonia must always be interpreted in relation to current and previous powers. The representation of a national us has, furthermore, been articulated in relation to, but not always against, inner others who could be interpreted as residues of foreign dominance. An analysis of the work of Finnish writer Aino Kallas, née Krohn (1878-1956) shows how multiple dimensions of belonging build on the tension between language, nationality, and identification but nevertheless offset the longing for oversimplified unity. The written and printed word, more specifically the novel, has been identified as paramount to the establishment of the modern nation-state. This article works with life writing as a textual site for negotiating national belonging during the turbulent first few decades of the twentieth century. The fundamental questions are as follows. How does Kallas choose to depict her loyalties? What aspects are given meaning: culture, language or official citizenship? What limitations did she encounter? I will argue that nationalism can also be articulated without invoking sharp distinctions between nations, languages or cultures. Kallas did not write anything that could be defined as an autobiography in the narrow sense of the word. Her diaries were minimally edited, and three books published in the 1940s and 1950s are rather reflections on past times and people with autobiographical elements than autobiography per se. Because the various genres involve differing author/reader expectations, the term life writing may be better suited to describe the material. Life writing brings together autobiography, biography and diaries.

- Litteraturvetaren som under dse senaste åren sysslat med ekokritik, historikern som skrivit miljöhistoria, eller varför inte idéhistorikern som studerat människans tankar om naturen, befinner sig plötsligt i ett nytt vetenskapligt landskap – miljöhumaniora, grön humaniora eller environmental humanities. Bakom satsningen på miljöhumaniora finns en uttalad idé om att samla, och därmed stärka, humanistisk forskning kring miljöfrågor under den ofta upprepade devisen “”miljöforskningen behöver humaniora”. I fokus för den här artikeln står forskningsfinansiärernas intresse av att definiera det nya fältet, snarare än forskardrivna förändring inom redan etablerade forskningsområden. Den här typen av omdefiniering innebär inte bara en nystart som på ett konstruktivt sätt försöker förbättra forskningsvillkoren utan också, vilket jag kommer att uppehålla mig vid, att etablerade forskningsområden som ekokritik och miljöhistoria, till och med humaniora i stort, omdefinieras i förhållande till nya syften och problemställningar.

- Idéen om en världslitteratur har inspirerat och gäckat författare och världslitteraturforskare sedan Goethe myntade uttrycket i början av 1800-talet. Goethe ansåg att världslitteraturen delvis gjorde de nationella litteraturerna obsoleta, framtiden låg i det gemensamma litteraturarvet. Litteraturen tillhör hela världen, men den framträder alltid i en språklig form som gör den otillgänglig för de flesta, vilket i sin tur kräver översättning. Och inte har väl nationella litteraturer spelat ut sin roll? Eller, går det verkligen att översätta ett estetiskt verk med bibehållen betydelse? Frågorna inom världslitteraturforskningen är många. I föreliggande essä kommer jag att resonera kring ett begreppspar som blivit populärt inom världslitteraturforskningen: det vernakulära och det kosmopolitiska. Jag kommer att närma mig begreppen och de fördelar dessa har i jämförelse med andra analytiska begrepp genom att anlägga ett regionsperspektiv som tar avstamp i Östersjöområdet. Exemplet är begränsat, men jag tänker att det är främst genom konkreta exempel som vi kan testa teoriernas hållbarhet. Läs detta som ett sådant test.
