- I describe methods used by home carers to cope with troublesome clients and analyze how the organizational context affects their use. Empirical data consist of participant observation and field interviews with 14 home carers in three municipalities in southern Sweden. Home carers might try to avoid working with troublesome clients, prepare themselves mentally before visiting them, try to withhold them psychologically, try to understand them and explain their behavior, try to change their behavior, and vent experiences with colleagues. Although some of these methods are practiced frontstage, in interactions with clients, others take place backstage, only involving staff. Their use is influenced both by properties of frontstage work, for instance, the intimate nature of many tasks and the experienced need to keep up a "good" relationship with clients, and by the organization of backstage work, for instance, the organization of staff meetings and supervisors' understanding of coping processes.

- Meanings of overweightIn societal discourses overweight is defined as a growing individual and a social problem leading to sickness and disability, mental distress, increased use of health care and reduced economic productivity. A strong normative pressure is directed at the overweight but relatively few succeed in reducing their weight. Therefore, the overweight need to manage a double stigma; the overweight body per se and their inability to conform to norms about bodyweight. This article investigates how individuals present their overweight to their social environment. Empirical data was collected as part of an evaluation study of a keep-fit project directed at home-care staff. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 49 participants and 30 of them had either tried or were trying to reduce their weight. The analysis shows that the informants presented a divided self consisting of a biological body, with its own drives, and a mind that is aware of the body and its social meanings. They portrayed their lives as a battle between these two sides. Their presentations of the divided self can be analysed as a defence of their social selves. The overweight can account for the kilos by blaming the biological drives, which leaves the core of themselves – their minds – unblemished. They can express an intention to loose weight and thereby conform to norms about bodyweight. When they fail to loose weight, the responsibility can be attributed to the unruly body.

- Hur kan det komma sig att en relativt stor andel lärare på en och samma gång är missnöjda med en rad arbetsvillkor och upplever att arbetet är meningsfullt? Varför är, med andra ord, många lärare nöjda med sin yrkesutövning som lärare samtidigt som de är missnöjda som anställda? Frågeställningarna har attackerats från flera håll med utgångspunkt från läraryrkets och skolans utveckling under de senaste 20 åren. Många lärare förefaller finna sitt yrkes mening i relationen med eleverna och i de nära arbetsvillkoren. Missnöjets källa förefaller å andra sidan vara förvandlingen av de nära arbetsvillkoren inom ramen för skolans utveckling under de senaste 10-15 åren, som bland annat resulterat i att lärarens roll som underordnad anställd betonats och att yrkesautonomin utmanats.
