  • Learning About Conflict and Conflict Management Through Drama in Nursing Education

    • Background: In the health care settings in which nurses work, involvement in some form of conflict is inevitable. The ability to manage conflicts is therefore necessary for nursing students to learn during their education. Method: A qualitative analysis of 43 written group assignments was undertaken using a content analysis approach. Results: Three main categories emerged in the analysis-to approach and integrate with the theoretical content, to step back and get an overview, and to concretize and practicetogether with the overall theme, to learn by oscillating between closeness and distance. Conclusion: Learning about conflict and conflict management through drama enables nursing students to form new knowledge by oscillating between closeness and distance, to engage in both the fictional world and the real world at the same time. This helps students to form a personal understanding of theoretical concepts and a readiness about how to manage future conflicts.

    • Aim The aim of the study is to describe nurses' experiences of working with health promotion and prevention of cardiovascular diseases related to smoking in Indonesia. Methods A phenomenographic approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurses in health care centers and hospitals in Yogyakarta. The interviews were analysed according to Alexandersson's model. Results Three themes emerged from the analysis: Conceptions in relation to the patient and their family, conceptions in relation to the hospital and health care centers and conceptions in relation to the culture and policies. All nurses are working with health promotion and prevention of cardiovascular diseases related to smoking in one way or another. However, distinct guidelines and resources are missing. The nurses also mentioned the need of training in smoking cessation to better work with health promotion and prevention of cardiovascular diseases with a focus on smoking. Conclusion The difficulties rise from lack of resources in the health care facilities, the patients' lack of motivation and weak policies from the government. For the situation to be improved the nurses need guidelines, training and more time to work with health promotion and prevention. What this study adds: Nurses stated that guidelines are not available to work with health promotion and smoking cessation in Indonesia. Nurses in Indonesia state they need training or retraining regarding the subject to be able to give good and proper education in tobacco cessation for cardiovascular ill patients. Smoking is considered a tradition in Indonesia and the environment is not supportive for the ones who want to quit. Even though, involving the family shows to be a successful method for smoking cessation. The implications of this paper: Provide training in smoking cessation and in communication for Indonesian nurses to feel more secure when motivating the patients to quit smoking. Establish specific guidelines to help and support the nurses in their work with cardiovascular diseases related to smoking. Involving family is a successful approach that nurses can use in their work with smoking cessation which other studies also indicated.

    • © 2014 The College of Radiographers. Background: Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) often caused by atherosclerosis is a major health care issue worldwide. Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty (PTA) on the lower limb is a common procedure used to enhance peripheral circulation. With an increasing number of individuals acquiring peripheral PTA treatment and with an increased focus on patient centred care, there is a need to find out more about patients' feelings and thoughts of undergoing PTA. Aim: The aim was to identify patients who are predominantly anxious or calm during and after peripheral PTA and to explore reasons for these feelings. Method: The study includes 51 patients who received PTA treatment in western Sweden. Findings: Seventy-eight percent of the patients rated themselves as calm after the PTA. The analysed interviews resulted in two themes: reasons for feelings of calmness and reasons for feelings of anxiety. Conclusion: In order to feel calm during and after the PTA, information given prior to the PTA needs to be comprehensive and consistent with the actual situation at the angiography suite. The dialogue with the physician and the radiographers was considered valuable, as was the ability to follow the procedure on the image screen. It is concluded that a thorough dialogue with the physician in a calm setting after the PTA is important for the patients' ability to foresee and plan for the future. Moreover, there is a need to find ways to improve analgesic routines regarding assessment and evaluation in connection with PTA treatment as pain is shown to increase anxiety.

  • Professional development for radiographers and post graduate nurses in radiological interventions : Building teamwork and collaboration through drama

    • INTRODUCTION: The rapid development within Interventional Radiology presents new challenges. Hybrid operating rooms consist of interventional radiology, open surgery, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and other techniques. This means that several disciplines and professionals need to work in new constellations creating a multidisciplinary team around the patient. In accordance with this development, higher professional education must provide new pedagogic strategies to successfully address the knowledge expected in today's complex working life.AIM: To explore the use of Applied Drama as a learning medium, focusing on the use of Forum Theatre, to foster team work and collaboration in the field of radiography and learning.METHODS: A qualitative approach, closely related to Ethnography, was utilized.RESULT: The Drama Workshop utilising Forum Theatre created a dynamic learning environment and enabled the participants from three professions to understand each other's priorities better. The use of drama within health care education allows the students to take different roles in order to find the best way to co-operate.CONCLUSION: Forum Theatre is a useful learning medium in order to promote teamwork and collaboration in the radiological intervention field. By choosing a personal working experience, Forum Theatre seem to engage the participants at a deeper level and to experience various communication strategies and how the outcome changed depending on the approach. This can lead to improved teamwork and collaboration.

    • Abstract Nursing education will play an important role in further advancing healthcare transformation in the future. The aim of this study was to assess and compare nursing education and self-reported professional competence among nursing students graduating with a bachelor’s degree from higher education institutions in Europe. Data were collected using the Nurse Professional Competence Scale including 88 items and eight competence areas. In total, 752 nursing students at 11 higher education institutions in Europe participated in the study, with a response rate of 88.7%. The highest measured mean scores were found in the competence areas ‘Value-based nursing care’ and ‘Medical technical care’ and the lowest were found in ‘Legislation in nursing and safety planning’ and ‘Education and supervision of staff and students’. Nursing students in central Europe scored significantly higher on seven out of the eight competence areas than nursing students in northern and southern Europe. In order to standardize and further develop nursing education in Europe, the assessment of nursing-related competences is of crucial importance.
