  • Knowledge Resistance : How We Avoid Insight from Others
  • 2019
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Why do people and groups ignore, deny and resist knowledge about society's many problems? In a world of 'alternative facts', 'fake news' that some believe could be remedied by 'factfulness', the question has never been more pressing. After years of ideologically polarised debates on this topic, the book seeks to further advance our understanding of the phenomenon of knowledge resistance by integrating insights from the social, economic and evolutionary sciences. It identifies simplistic views in public and scholarly debates about what facts, knowledge and human motivations are and what 'rational' use of information actually means. The examples used include controversies about nature-nurture, climate change, gender roles, vaccination, genetically modified food and artificial intelligence. Drawing on cutting-edge scholarship as well as personal experiences of culture clashes, the book is aimed at the general, educated public as well as students and scholars interested in the interface of human motivation and the urgent social problems of today.

  • An extended production-inventory system and its modelling
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With today's global competitive environment and changing customer requirements, companies are nowadays shifting from product-oriented to customer-oriented production. In this paper, we introduce the concept of an "extended production-inventory system". The concept means that customers are included as a part of production-inventory systems; this could be regarded as an extreme case of customer-oriented manufacturing. Based on that concept, a simple extended productioninventory system is presented. In the system, the objectives of both manufacturer and customer are considered simultaneously, and it is shown how the system can be mathematically modelled applyingmultiple-objective decision-making techniques. Moreover, a numerical example is provided to illustrate how the weights of different objectives influence the optimal solutions. The strategy of customisation, facilitated by e-business, is incorporated in the model as well.

  • Re-Commerce to Ensure Circular Economy from Consumer Perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 13:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Responsible consumption practice is crucial to minimizing waste as part of sustainable development (SDG 12). This can be achieved by extending product life in a cradle-to-cradle system as part of a circular economy. However, are consumers willing to extend product life by reusing materials? The phenomenon of re-commerce, where consumers sell products to each other (C2C), takes place in physical as well as web-based markets. This project focuses on enabling factors for re-commerce practices on Facebook among consumers in Bangladesh. A review of existing literature provided grounds for an empirical focus group study of Bangladeshi consumers. Using a social practice theory perspective in a thematic analysis shows that enabling factors in terms of technical competence, context-bound conditions influencing meanings such as socially accepted procedures, and practical practices relating to materials such as payment forms and logistics support, all serve as enabling or hindering factors. The study contributes to the understanding of conditions for re-commerce practices as part of a circular economy system where consumers are encouraged to engage in responsible consumption by extending product life cycles.

  • Determination of a high-quality nuclear magnetic resonance solution structure of the bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor and comparison with three crystal structures
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-2836. ; 227, s. 757-775
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A high-quality three-dimensional structure of the bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI) in aqueous solution was determined by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) spectroscopy and compared to the three available high-resolution X-ray crystal structures. A newly collected input of 642 distance constraints derived from nuclear Overhauser effects and 115 dihedral angle constraints was used for the structure calculations with the program DIANA, followed by restrained energy minimization with the program AMBER. The BPTI solution structure is represented by a group of 20 conformers with an average root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) relative to the mean solution structure of 0.43 A for backbone atoms and 0.92 A for all heavy atoms of residues 2 to 56. The pairwise RMSD values of the three crystal structures relative to the mean solution structure are 0.76 to 0.85 A for the backbone atoms and 1.24 to 1.33 A for all heavy atoms of residues 2 to 56. Small local differences in backbone atom positions between the solution structure and the X-ray structures near residues 9, 25 to 27, 46 to 48 and 52 to 58, and conformational differences for individual amino acid side-chains were analyzed for possible correlations with intermolecular protein-protein contacts in the crystal lattices, using the pairwise RMSD values among the three crystal structures as a reference.

  • Childhood injury after a parental cancer diagnosis
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - Stockholm : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A parental cancer diagnosis is psychologically straining for the whole family. We investigated whether a parental cancer diagnosis is associated with a higher-than-expected risk of injury among children by using a Swedish nationwide register-based cohort study. Compared to children without parental cancer, children with parental cancer had a higher rate of hospital contact for injury during the first year after parental cancer diagnosis (hazard ratio [HR]=1.27, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.22-1.33), especially when the parent had a comorbid psychiatric disorder after cancer diagnosis (HR=1.41, 95% CI=1.08-1.85). The rate increment declined during the second and third year after parental cancer diagnosis (HR=1.10, 95% CI=1.07-1.14) and became null afterwards (HR=1.01, 95% CI=0.99-1.03). Children with parental cancer also had a higher rate of repeated injuries than the other children (HR=1.13, 95% CI= 1.12-1.15). Given the high rate of injury among children in the general population, our findings may have important public health implications.

  • Environmental and resource aspects of substituting cemented carbide with polycrystalline diamond : The case of machining tools
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 277
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Synthetic diamond competes with the conventional cemented carbide (WC–Co) tool material in some applications due to its extreme hardness. However, so far, these materials have not been compared from a life cycle perspective regarding their environmental and resource impacts. The aims of this study are i) to provide detailed life cycle assessment (LCA) results for industrial polycrystalline diamond (PCD) production from diamond grit produced via high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) synthesis and ii) to conduct the first comparative LCA of PCD and WC-Co tools for the cases of wood working and titanium alloys machining. The results show that the main hotspot in HPHT synthesis of diamond grit, which is the main precursor to PCD, is the use of WC-Co in the high-pressure apparatus. In PCD tool production, the electricity input and the use of tungsten and molybdenum contribute the most to environmental and resource impacts. The environmental and resource impacts of the PCD tool production can be reduced with 53–83% if solar electricity and full WC-Co recycling is applied. The comparison shows high environmental and resource improvements when substituting WC-Co tools with PCD tools in wood working, but not in titanium alloys machining. © 2020 The Authors

  • Taxes and Household Labor Supply : Estimating Distributional Effects of Nonlinear Prices on Multidimensional Choice
  • 2018
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We develop a method for distributional regression of joint multidimensional choice on nonlinear prices departing from a household model of labor supply that focuses on tax policy effects. Our distribution functions are derived under minimal theoretical assumptions and have a simple structure. We allow distribution-free estimation, collective decisionmaking, and identification based on tax reforms. In our empirical application on U.S. panel data from 1980 to 2006, we provide a deepened understanding of how the configuration of the tax system affects the distribution of transitions between combinations of spouse labor supply. We also quantify biases from commonly imposed restrictions.

  • Early Christians, immigrants and ritualised practice. A case study of the south-eastern Bornholm
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Lund Archaeological Review. - 1401-2189. ; 11-12:2005-2006, s. 17-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the article funerary rituals observed on early medieval cemeteries of the south-eastern Bornholm are studied and explained from the perspective of theory of practice. Rituals, although sharing certain elements with other types of human practices, are viewed as a special kind of actions due to their formality, fixity and their outcomes. It is argued that the analysis of the funerary rituals practiced by the communities of the early medieval Bornholm can, on one hand, inform about non-verbal expression of identity of their members and, on the other hand, enlighten the circumstances and the reaction to the proceeding social and political change that took place on the island in the 1000-1100 AD.
