  • A new Approach to fast Distance Protection with Adaptive Features
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. - : IEE. - 0 85296 672 5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Distance relays are one of the most important components of protection available to power system protection engineers. Distance relays can benefit from ideas in the newly developed field of adaptive protection, and can offer an even more selective and sensitive form of protection, under a variety of power system configurations. A new fast adaptive distance protection scheme for single line to ground faults and multi-phase faults for EHV transmission lines is described in this paper. This scheme also performs well on series compensated lines. The new complementary fast tripping algorithms together with the earlier experienced algorithm and multiprocessor-based distance algorithm, have led to the development to an adaptive hybrid scheme. This scheme is implemented into a well-proven hardware platform with moderate requirements on the communication. The protection scheme provides high speed tripping (less than one cycle) and high speed signalling.

  • Operational Experience of Load Shedding and new Operational Requirements on Frequency Relays
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. - : IEE.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper summarises experience and analysis of under-frequency load shedding and power generator islanding. Most power systems can withstand the loss of a single generating unit or a single transmission line. Simultaneous loss of several power system components may cause a severe deficit in active and reactive power. The action of overexcitation limiters on the remaining generators may further aggravate the situation. Such infrequent events may cause severe drop in system frequency and voltage magnitude. Frequency relays for load shedding and power generator islanding must operate correctly even if the system frequency decays and the voltage magnitude decays rapidly at the same time

  • Powerformer™: A giant Step in Power Plant Engineering
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing].
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Powerformer(R), a new high-voltage generator, was presented by ABB. It offers a direct connection to the power network without the need for a step-up transformer. In a sense, Powerformer incorporates into one unit the functions of both the conventional generator and the step-up transformer. Thanks to its ability to generate electricity at transmission voltage levels, a power plant utilizing Powerformer offers considerable gains with respect to reactive power production and plant efficiency. Thus, Powerformer both facilitates network stability and decreases the exploitation of the natural resources
