  • Genome-wide meta-analysis identifies 11 new loci for anthropometric traits and provides insights into genetic architecture
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 45:5, s. 501-U69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Approaches exploiting trait distribution extremes may be used to identify loci associated with common traits, but it is unknown whether these loci are generalizable to the broader population. In a genome-wide search for loci associated with the upper versus the lower 5th percentiles of body mass index, height and waist-to-hip ratio, as well as clinical classes of obesity, including up to 263,407 individuals of European ancestry, we identified 4 new loci (IGFBP4, H6PD, RSRC1 and PPP2R2A) influencing height detected in the distribution tails and 7 new loci (HNF4G, RPTOR, GNAT2, MRPS33P4, ADCY9, HS6ST3 and ZZZ3) for clinical classes of obesity. Further, we find a large overlap in genetic structure and the distribution of variants between traits based on extremes and the general population and little etiological heterogeneity between obesity subgroups.

  • Meta-analysis identifies 13 new loci associated with waist-hip ratio and reveals sexual dimorphism in the genetic basis of fat distribution
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 42:11, s. 949-960
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Waist-hip ratio (WHR) is a measure of body fat distribution and a predictor of metabolic consequences independent of overall adiposity. WHR is heritable, but few genetic variants influencing this trait have been identified. We conducted a meta-analysis of 32 genome-wide association studies for WHR adjusted for body mass index (comprising up to 77,167 participants), following up 16 loci in an additional 29 studies (comprising up to 113,636 subjects). We identified 13 new loci in or near RSPO3, VEGFA, TBX15-WARS2, NFE2L3, GRB14, DNM3-PIGC, ITPR2-SSPN, LY86, HOXC13, ADAMTS9, ZNRF3-KREMEN1, NISCH-STAB1 and CPEB4 (P = 1.9 × 10⁻⁹ to P = 1.8 × 10⁻⁴⁰) and the known signal at LYPLAL1. Seven of these loci exhibited marked sexual dimorphism, all with a stronger effect on WHR in women than men (P for sex difference = 1.9 × 10⁻³ to P = 1.2 × 10⁻¹³). These findings provide evidence for multiple loci that modulate body fat distribution independent of overall adiposity and reveal strong gene-by-sex interactions.

  • Blogging Family-like Relations when visiting Theme and Amusement Parks : The Use of Children in Displays Online
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Culture Unbound. Journal of Current Cultural Research. - : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 2000-1525 .- 2000-1525. ; 6:55, s. 997-1013
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper combines sociological perspectives on family display, internet studies on family and private photography and a child studies perspective on the display of children. The paper proposes that blogging practices related to visits to theme and amusement parks in Sweden provide a new arena for people to displayfami-ly-like relationships. In the different displays, adults mainly use pictures of chil-dren in the blogs to demonstratetheir ability to perform family-likerelationships. The paper suggests that thisform of child-centred display,a visualized child-centredness, done during the park visit as well as in the blogging, is part of the construction of contemporary childhoods and what it means to be a child today and has not been theorized in earlier research on the display of family-like rela-tions.

  • From Instruction to Reflection : Film in Education in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Research in media education. - New York : Nova Science Publishers, Inc.. - 9781612096438 ; , s. 151-174
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Today, people know what is happening around them through radio, television, newspapers and the like. With the advance of the telecommunication technology, people are now also familiar with the use of personal computers, the Internet and so on. The mass media is now regarded as essential for keeping people up to date with the world around them. In view of this, the innovation of a new curriculum, media education or the study of the mass media, has been recommended. This book examines the prevailing perspectives regarding media education in different countries around the world and what kinds of research is being conducted in the field of media education.

  • Visual Documentation as a Normalizing Practice : A New Discourse of Visibility in Preschool
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Surveillance & Society. - : Surveillance Studies Network. - 1477-7487. ; 7:3/4, s. 248-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The visual documentation of education for pedagogical purposes focuses on preschool children’s activities and is used by educators to improve their understanding of children while strengthening their own professionalism. By analysing three educational TV programmes concerning visual documentation in preschools, this paper challenges the positivistic way visual documentation is portrayed. Moreover, it questions political documents and the TV programmes’ unproblematic description of children as always ready to be visually documented. Applying a child perspective and children’s perspectives, the paper demonstrates that there is a fine line between being documented and surveilled using visual technologies. The paper describes how doing on-looking-ness (onlooker) versus being looked-at-ness (looked at) can be understood as specific discursive formations.

  • Association analyses of 249,796 individuals reveal 18 new loci associated with body mass index
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 42:11, s. 937-948
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Obesity is globally prevalent and highly heritable, but its underlying genetic factors remain largely elusive. To identify genetic loci for obesity susceptibility, we examined associations between body mass index and ~2.8 million SNPs in up to 123,865 individuals with targeted follow up of 42 SNPs in up to 125,931 additional individuals. We confirmed 14 known obesity susceptibility loci and identified 18 new loci associated with body mass index (P < 5 × 10−8), one of which includes a copy number variant near GPRC5B. Some loci (at MC4R, POMC, SH2B1 and BDNF) map near key hypothalamic regulators of energy balance, and one of these loci is near GIPR, an incretin receptor. Furthermore, genes in other newly associated loci may provide new insights into human body weight regulation.

  • Att följa med samtiden : kvinnojoursrörelse i förändring
  • 2013

  • Ethical Issues in Pedagogical Documentation : Representations of Children Through Digital Technology
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Early Childhood. - : Springer. - 0020-7187 .- 1878-4658. ; 44:3, s. 327-340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Documentation for pedagogical purposes is an increasingly important practice in Sweden, in Europe, and in the United States. This article focuses on the ethical aspects that need to be addressed in documentation practices in preschool. The empirical material is drawn from the blogs of Swedish preschool teachers who recorded their thoughts on pedagogical documentation while attending a university course on the subject. Today, digital technology (e.g., digital cameras, mobile phones, and tablet computers) make it easy to create visual documentation in the form of moving and still pictures. Moreover, webcams, USB sticks, and interactive whiteboards can be used to share documentation with others, mainly teachers and parents. In the communication process, the documented children are involved to different degrees; however, they are mainly positioned as subjects being looked at. In the discussion, research about children’s role as participants is related to different notions of the child in pedagogy and society. Ideas for the future are also raised.

  • Gender and Generation in Swedish School Radio Broadcasts in the 1930s : An Exploratory Case Study
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth. - : Johns Hopkins University Press. - 1939-6724 .- 1941-3599. ; 5:2, s. 239-259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a method for studying historical radio dialogues with participating children. It is an in-depth method focusing on the interaction in dialogues and the aim is to get an understanding of discursive change in a historical perspective, and more specifically how radio dialogues can be understood as sites for negotiations on citizenship norms and values. The focus is on changed notions of gender and generation. Choice of topic, turn taking, and the distribution of questions and answers are analyzed as parts of an ongoing struggle between power relations in which contemporary gender and generational orders were challenged. Thus, the staring point is Critical Discourse Analysis but it is applied on historical material and adapted to radio dialogues. The argument put forward is that the method presented can increase the understanding of how notions of gender and generation have been challenged in everyday practices, here in the form of everyday radio dialogues with participating children. The highly politicized but non-commercial public school broadcasts gave children a voice as competent and active citizens in new ways, and especially in programs produced by female teachers. In particular, these programs transgressed traditional boundaries concerning notions of gender and generation and thus understandings of childhood.
