  • Highly Oriented Graphite Aerogel Fabricated by Confined Liquid-Phase Expansion for Anisotropically Thermally Conductive Epoxy Composites

    • Graphene-based thermally conductive polymer composites are of great importance for the removal of the excess heat generated by electronic devices. However, due to the orientation of graphene sheets in the polymer matrix, the through-plane thermal conductivity of polymer/graphene composites remains far from satisfactory. We here demonstrate a confined liquid-phase expansion strategy to fabricate highly oriented confined expanded graphite (CEG) aerogels. After being incorporated into epoxy resin (EP), the resulting EP/CEG composites exhibit a high through-plane thermal conductivity (4.14 ± 0.21 W m-1 K-1) at a quite low filler loading of 1.75 wt % (0.91 vol %), nearly 10 times higher than that of neat EP resin and 7.5 times higher than the in-plane thermal conductivity of the composite, indicating that the CEG aerogel has a high through-plane thermal conductivity enhancement efficiency that outperforms those of many graphite/graphene-based fillers. The facile preparation method holds great industrial application potential in fabricating anisotropic thermally conductive polymer composites.

    • Almost 15 years have gone ever since the discovery of graphene as a single atom layer. Numerous papers have been published to demonstrate its high electron mobility, excellent thermal and mechanical as well as optical properties. We have recently seen more and more applications towards using graphene in commercial products. This paper is an attempt to review and summarize the current status of the research of the thermal properties of graphene and other 2D based materials including the manufacturing and characterization techniques and their applications, especially in electronics and power modules. It is obvious from the review that graphene has penetrated the market and gets more and more applications in commercial electronics thermal management context. In the paper, we also made a critical analysis of how mature the manufacturing processes are; what are the accuracies and challenges with the various characterization techniques and what are the remaining questions and issues left before we see further more applications in this exciting and fascinating field.

  • A critical review on livestock manure biorefinery technologies : Sustainability, challenges, and future perspectives

    • An ever increasing demand for animal protein products has posed serious challenges for managing the increasingquantities of livestock manure. The choice of treatment technologies is still a complicated task and considerabledebates over this issue still continue. To build a clearer picture of manure treatment framework, this study wasconducted to review the most frequently employed manure management technologies from their state of the art,challenges, sustainability, environmental regulations and incentives, and improvement strategies perspectives.The results showed that most treatment technologies have focused on the solid fraction of manure while theliquid fraction still remains a potential environmental threat. Compared to other waste to energy solutions,anaerobic digestion is the most mature technology to upgrade manure’s organic matter into renewable energy,however the problems associated with high investment costs, operating parameters, manure collection, anddigestate management have hindered its developments in rural areas in developing countries. Bio-oil productionthrough hydrothermal liquification is also a promising solution, as it can directly convert the wet manure intobiofuel. However, lipid-poor nature of manure, operational difficulties, and the need for downstream process toremove nitrogenous compounds from the final product necessitate further research. Livestock manure management(both solid and liquid fractions) under biorefinery approach seems an inevitable solution for futuresustainable development to meet circular bioeconomy requirements. Much research is still required to establish asystematic framework based on regional requirements to develop an integrated manure nutrient recycling andmanure management planning with minimum environmental risks and maximum profit.

  • Heavy metal accumulation, geochemical fractions, and loadings in two agricultural watersheds with distinct climate conditions

    • The main aim of this study was to explore the effects of climate conditions on the transport and transformation of heavy metals. Sedimentary geochemical analysis and watershed modeling were used to investigate the distinctions between heavy metal pollution under different climate conditions. The results showed that the average concentrations of Cu, Cd, and Pb in sediments of the subtropical watershed (36.64, 0.60, and 133.69 mg/kg, respectively) were higher than those of the temperate watershed (26.58, 0.19, and 23.17 mg/kg, respectively) because of surface runoff-induced heavy metal loadings under higher precipitation. Also, the labile fractions, which mainly originated from anthropogenic sources, showed higher percentages in the subtropical watershed (67.84-91.33%), thereby indicating that the transport of heavy metals was promoted by surface runoff. Moreover, higher percentages of acid-soluble fractions of Cu and Pb (23.55-33.60%) in the subtropical watershed suggested that higher temperatures accelerated the transformation of heavy metal fractions, thus contributing to the transportation of heavy metals. Overall, climate conditions were the dominant factors for the differences between the subtropical and temperate watersheds. The results of this study suggest that the effects of climate conditions on the transport, enrichment, and bioavailability of heavy metals are of great significance. Such effects should therefore be the focus of future studies.

  • Microencapsulated phase change material through cellulose nanofibrils stabilized Pickering emulsion templating

    • Phase change materials (PCMs) possess remarkable capability to store and release substantial amounts of energy during the processes of melting and crystallization across a wide temperature range, thus holding great promise in applications related to temperature regulation and thermal energy storage. Herein, to effectively address PCM leakage and enhance thermal conduction, PCM microcapsules with melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF) shell were prepared using in situ polymerization of Pickering emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). CNFs were selected as the stabilizers for the Pickering emulsions and as reinforcing nanofillers for the MF shell, owing to their excellent emulsifying capability, high mechanical strength, and sustainable nature. Paraffin wax (PW) was utilized as the PCM material. The resulting PCM microcapsules with MF resin shells and PW core had a diameter ranging from 2 to 4 & mu;m. Results showed that microcapsule with the core-shell ratio of 2 (Micro-2.0) exhibited the highest latent heat of crystallization and latent heat of fusion, measuring approximately 128.40 J/g and 120.23 J/g, respectively. The encapsulation efficiency of Micro-2.0 was determined to be approximately 79.84%.

  • A Novel Graphene Quantum Dot-Based mRNA Delivery Platform

    • During the last decades, there has been growing interest in using therapeutic messager RNA (mRNA) together with drug delivery systems. Naked, unformulated mRNA is, however, unable to cross the cell membrane and is susceptible to degradation. Here we use graphene quantum dots (GQDs) functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a novel mRNA delivery system. Our results show that these modified GQDs can be used to deliver intact and functional mRNA to Huh-7 hepatocarcinoma cells at low doses and, that the GQDs are not toxic, although cellular toxicity is a problem for these first-generation modified particles. Functionalized GQDs represent a potentially interesting delivery system that is easy to manufacture, stable and effective.

  • Graphene based thermal management system for battery cooling in electric vehicles

    • In this work, a graphene assembled film integrated heat sink and water cooling technology was used to build an experimental set-up of a thermal management system to demonstrate the possibility to achieve efficient cooling of the propulsion battery in electric vehicles. The experimental results showed that the temperature decrease of a Li-ion battery module can reach 11°C and 9 °C under discharge rates as of 2C and 1C, respectively. The calculated thermal resistance of the graphene based cooling system is about 76% of a similar copper based cooling system. Surface modification was carried out on the graphene sheet to achieve a reliable bonding between the graphene sheet and the battery cell surface. This work provides a proof of concept of a new highly efficient approach for electric vehicle battery thermal management using the light-weight material graphene.

  • Frontiers of robotic colonoscopy : A comprehensive review of robotic colonoscopes and technologies

    • Flexible colonoscopy remains the prime mean of screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) and the gold standard of all population-based screening pathways around the world. Almost 60% of CRC deaths could be prevented with screening. However, colonoscopy attendance rates are affected by discomfort, fear of pain and embarrassment or loss of control during the procedure. Moreover, the emergence and global thread of new communicable diseases might seriously affect the functioning of contemporary centres performing gastrointestinal endoscopy. Innovative solutions are needed: artificial intelligence (AI) and physical robotics will drastically contribute for the future of the healthcare services. The translation of robotic technologies from traditional surgery to minimally invasive endoscopic interventions is an emerging field, mainly challenged by the tough requirements for miniaturization. Pioneering approaches for robotic colonoscopy have been reported in the nineties, with the appearance of inchworm-like devices. Since then, robotic colonoscopes with assistive functionalities have become commercially available. Research prototypes promise enhanced accessibility and flexibility for future therapeutic interventions, even via autonomous or robotic-assisted agents, such as robotic capsules. Furthermore, the pairing of such endoscopic systems with AI-enabled image analysis and recognition methods promises enhanced diagnostic yield. By assembling a multidisciplinary team of engineers and endoscopists, the paper aims to provide a contemporary and highly-pictorial critical review for robotic colonoscopes, hence providing clinicians and researchers with a glimpse of the major changes and challenges that lie ahead.

  • Twisted Alkylthiothien-2-yl Flanks and Extended Conjugation Length Synergistically Enhanced Photovoltaic Performance by Boosting Dielectric Constant and Carriers Kinetic Characteristics

    • Alternating conjugated polymers (CPs), derived from 2-ethylhexylthiothiophen-2-yl (TS) or 2-ethylhexylthiophen-2-yl (T) flanked dithieno[3,2-d:3,2-d ']benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b ']dithiophene (DTBDT) and diketopyrrolo-pyrrole (DPP) termed as PDTBDT-TS-DPP and PDTBDT-T-DPP, are prepared and characterized. It is found that the PDTBDT-TS-DPP not only exhibits slightly deepening the highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels, and similar absorption, etc., but also presents higher dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) of 6.7 at 1 kHz in contrast to 3.2 for PDTBDT-T-DPP, which are even higher than those of 4.3 and 3.0 for PBDT-TS-DPP/PBDT-T-DPP generated from TS and T flanked benzo[1,2-b:4,5-bMODIFIER LETTER PRIME]dithiophene and DPP. Beyond that, the power conversion efficiency of 8.17% for the inverted photovoltaic devices from DPP-based CPs, is achieved from PDTBDT-TS-DPP. The alkylthio side chains are used in the DTBDT of the larger twisting angles of TS flanks and longer conjugation length, synergistically contribute to the highest dipole moments, and then lead to the enhancement of epsilon(r), thus devoted the modification exciton dissociation and charge carriers kinetic characteristics. To the authors' knowledge, it is the first time to report that epsilon(r) of the CPs is connected with the twisting angle of flanks and conjugation length of the building blocks, besides the use of functional side chains and atoms.

  • An n-n Heterojunction Configuration for Efficient Electron Transport in Organic Photovoltaic Devices

    • Selective electron transport and extraction are essential to the operation of photovoltaic devices. Electron transport layer (ETL) is therefore critical to organic photovoltaics (OPV). Herein, an ETL configuration is presented comprising a solution-processed n-n organic heterojunction to enhance electron transport and hole blocking, and boost power conversion efficiency (PCE) in OPV. Specifically, the n-n heterojunction is constructed by stacking a narrow-band n-type conjugated polymer layer (PNDIT-F3N) and a wide-band n-type conjugated molecule layer (Phen-NaDPO). Based on the ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurement and numerical simulation of current density-voltage characteristics, the formation of the built-in potential is investigated. In three OPVs with different active layers, substantial improvements are observed in performance following the introduction of this ETL configuration. The performance enhancement arises from the combination of selective carrier transport properties and reduced recombination. Another contributing factor is the good film-forming quality of the new ETL configuration, where the surface energies of the related materials are well-matched. The n-n organic heterojunction represents a viable and promising ETL construction strategy for efficient OPV devices.
