  • Femtosecond photo-induced dissociation of the trihalide anions I 3 - and I2Br- in solution
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: ULTRAFAST PHENOMENA XIV. - 3540241108 ; , s. 499-501
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The photo-induced dissociation of the trihalide anions I3 - and I2Br- in methanol and acetonitrile solution is investigated using magic angle and polarization sensitive femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The dissociation of I 2Br- and I3 - in acetonitrile are found to be very similar, except at the earliest times. A noticeable solvent dependence for the dissociation process is seen, e.g. in the degree of vibrational coherence and the rotational temperature of the I2 - fragment and in the amount of recombination.

  • Elastic properties of the lung and the chest wall in young and adult healthy pigs
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Respiratory Journal. - 1399-3003. ; 17:4, s. 703-711
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding of the elastic pressure/volume (Pel/V) curve is still limited in health and disease. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the Pel/V curve and elastance of the respiratory system (ERS) lung (EL) and chest wall (ECW) in healthy pigs. Six young (20.8 kg) and seven adult (58.9 kg), anaesthetized, paralysed and ventilated pigs were studied. Pel/V curves were recorded at zero end-expiratory pressure (ZEEP) and at positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) up to 40 cmH2O with a computer controlled ventilator during an insufflation at a low, constant flow. Pel/V curves of the respiratory system showed a complex pattern in both young and adult pigs. During the insufflation, ERS decreased, increased, fell, and increased again. A second Pel/V curve recorded immediately after the first one showed lower elastance and only one early fall in ERS. ECW fell over the initial segment and was then nearly stable. Difference between 1st and 2nd curves reflected changes in EL caused by recruitment during the 1st insufflation. At PEEP, such signs of collapse and recruitment were reduced. A strong tendency to lung collapse contributes to a complex pattern of elastic pressure/volume curves. At low volumes and distending pressures the chest wall contributes significantly to changes in respiratory system elastance.

  • Toxicity of familial ALS-linked SOD1 mutants from selective recruitment to spinal mitochondria
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Neuron. - : Cell Press. - 0896-6273 .- 1097-4199. ; 43:1, s. 5-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is mutation in ubiquitously expressed copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1), but the mechanism of toxicity to motor neurons is unknown. Multiple disease-causing mutants, but not wild-type SOD1, are now demonstrated to be recruited to mitochondria, but only in affected tissues. This is independent of the copper chaperone for SOD1 and dismutase activity. Highly preferential association with spinal cord mitochondria is seen in human ALS for a mutant SOD1 that accumulates only to trace cytoplasmic levels. Despite variable proportions that are successfully imported, nearly constant amounts of SOD1 mutants and covalently damaged adducts of them accumulate as apparent import intermediates and/or are tightly aggregated or crosslinked onto integral membrane components on the cytoplasmic face of those mitochondria. These findings implicate damage from action of spinal cord-specific factors that recruit mutant SOD1 to spinal mitochondria as the basis for their selective toxicity in ALS.
