  • Obesity and renal cell cancer : a quantitative review
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Cancer. - London, United Kingdom : Nature Publishing Group. - 0007-0920 .- 1532-1827. ; 85:7, s. 984-990
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Obesity has been associated with an increased risk of renal cell cancer among women, while the evidence for men is considered weaker. We conducted a quantitative summary analysis to evaluate the existing evidence that obesity increases the risk of renal cell cancer both among men and women. We identified all studies examining body weight in relation to kidney cancer, available in MEDLINE from 1966 to 1998. The quantitative summary analysis was limited to studies assessing obesity as body mass index (BMI, kg m(-2)), or equivalent. The risk estimates and the confidence intervals were extracted from the individual studies, and a mixed effect weighted regression model was used. We identified 22 unique studies on each sex, and the quantitative analysis included 14 studies on men and women, respectively. The summary relative risk estimate was 1.07 (95% CI 1.05-1.09) per unit of increase in BMI (corresponding to 3 kg body weight increase for a subject of average height). We found no evidence of effect modification by sex. Our quantitative summary shows that increased BMI is equally strongly associated with an increased risk of renal cell cancer among men and women.

  • Activity coefficients of HCl in the HCl + NH4Cl + H2O systems at 298.15 and 313.15 K
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0021-9568 .- 1520-5134. ; 45:1, s. 29-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the ion-selective electrode method with a concentrated electrolyte solution added continuously, the mean activity coefficients of HCl in the HCl + NH4Cl + H2O system were experimentally measured at 298.15 and 313.15 K and at five molality fractions of NH4Cl (y2 = mNH4Cl/(mHCl + mNH4Cl) from 0.1 to 0.9. The measurements were made by an electrochemical cell using a H glass ion-selective electrode and a chloride solid-state ion-selective electrode. It was found that the influence of NH4+ on the H glass ion-selective electrode could be neglected up to 1.3 molkg-1, and this pair of ion-selective electrodes was suitable for determining the activity coefficients of HCl in the system. A new set of Pitzer mixing parameters, correlated from the experimental results, was used to calculate the activity coefficients for HCl in the system from 293.15 to 313.15 K up to 3.0 molkg-1.

  • Mean activity coefficients of NaCl in (sodium chloride + sodium bicarbonate + water) fromT = (293.15 to 308.15) K
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-9614 .- 1096-3626. ; 33, s. 1107-1119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The mean activity coefficients of NaCl in (sodium chloride + sodium bicarbonate + water) were determined experimentally in the temperature range 293.15 K to 308.15 K at four NaHCO3 molality fractions (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7). The measurements were made with an electrochemical cell, using a Na+ glass ion-selective electrode and a Cl- solid-state ion-selective electrode. The experimental values reported by Butler and Huston are found to be higher than those calculated from the Pitzer equation using the existing parameters while the experimental results of this work are close to the calculated values, up to an NaHCO3 molality fraction of 0.5. At the NaHCO3 molality fraction of 0.7, the experimental data are much lower than the calculated values, implying that the interference of HCO3- on the Na+ glass ion-selective electrode can only be neglected up to a molality fraction of NaHCO3 of 0.5, an observation which is consistent with that of Butler and Huston.

  • Determination of carrier-transfer length from side-wall quantum well to quantum wire by micro-photoluminescence scanning
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electronic Materials. - : Springer Science Business Media. - 0361-5235 .- 1543-186X. ; 32:8, s. 913-916
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Micro-photoluminescence (mu-PL) line scanning across a single V-groove, GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wire (QWR) has been performed at room temperature, revealing a clear spatial-dependence of the PL. After fitting each PL spectrum by multi-Gaussian line shapes, intensity profiles of each PL component from confined structures have been obtained as functions of the scanning position. The PL quenching of a side-wall quantum well (SQWL) has been recognized in a certain area in the vicinity of the QWR and is interpreted by carrier transfer into the QWR within effective transfer length. By simulating the carrier-transfer process from SQWL to QWR as a convolution of a step function for carrier distribution and a Gaussian function for exciting laser irradiance, the effective transfer length of about 1.8+/-0.3 mum has, therefore, been concluded.

  • Induction of cancer cell apoptosis by a-tocopheryl succinate : Molecular pathways and structural requirements
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: The FASEB Journal. - : Wiley. - 0892-6638 .- 1530-6860. ; 15:2, s. 403-415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The vitamin E analog a-tocopheryl succinate (a-TOS) can induce apoptosis. We show that the proapoptotic activity of a-TOS in hematopoietic and cancer cell lines involves inhibition of protein kinase C (PKC), since phorbol myristyl acetate prevented a-TOS-triggered apoptosis. More selective effectors indicated that a-TOS reduced PKCa isotype activity by increasing protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) activity. The role of PKCa inhibition in a-TOS-induced apoptosis was confirmed using antisense oligonucleotides or PKCa overexpression. Gain- or loss-of-function bcl-2 mutants implied modulation of bcl-2 activity by PKC/PP2A as a mitochondrial target of a-TOS-induced proapoptotic signals. Structural analogs revealed that a-tocopheryl and succinyl moieties are both required for maximizing these effects. In mice with colon cancer xenografts, a-TOS suppressed tumor growth by 80%. This epitomizes cancer cell killing by a pharmacologically relevant compound without known side effects.

  • Infrared ellipsometry and Raman studies of hexagonal InN films : Correlation between strain and vibrational properties
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Superlattices and Microstructures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0749-6036 .- 1096-3677. ; 36:4-6, s. 573-580
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The vibrational properties of InN films with different strain have been studied using Infrared ellipsometry and Raman scattering spectroscopy. We have established a correlation between the phonon mode parameters and the strain, which allows the determination of the deformation potentials and the strain-free frequencies of the InN E1(TO) and E2 modes. The LO phonons and their coupling to the free-carrier plasmon excitations are also discussed in relation to the carrier concentration in the films. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
