  • Inwards buildup of concentric polymer layers: A method for biomolecule encapsulation and microcapsule encoding
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - Weinheim, Germany : Wiley-VCH Verlagsgesellschaft. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 49:330, s. 5189-5193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Encoding by encapsulation: A polymeric shell fabrication approach combines biomolecule encapsulation with encoding. Striated polymeric shells, fabricated through an inwards diffusion of poly(allylamine) into the matrices of agarose microbeads, serves to encapsulate the biomolecules within the microcapsule. Encoding is performed through the color and/or thickness permutation of the striated polymeric shells (see picture).

  • News droughts, news floods, and US disaster relief
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Quarterly Journal of Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0033-5533 .- 1531-4650. ; 122:2, s. 693-728
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies the influence of mass media on U. S. government response to approximately 5,000 natural disasters occurring between 1968 and 2002. These disasters took nearly 63,000 lives and affected 125 million people per year. We show that U. S. relief depends on whether the disaster occurs at the same time as other newsworthy events, such as the Olympic Games, which are obviously unrelated to need. We argue that the only plausible explanation of this is that relief decisions are driven by news coverage of disasters and that the other newsworthy material crowds out this news coverage.

  • The conundrum of asymptomatic carotid stenosis-determinants of decision and evidence
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Annals of Translational Medicine. - : AME Publishing Company. - 2305-5839 .- 2305-5847. ; 8:19
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Management of asymptomatic carotid disease continues to challenge medical practice and present evidence is often conflicting. Stroke is a significant burden in Public Health and 11% to 15% appear as first neurologic event associated with asymptomatic carotid stenosis. Randomized trials provided support for Guidelines and Recommendations to intervene on asymptomatic stenosis, but at a known cost of a high number of unnecessary operations. Conflicting evidence from natural history studies and the widespread use of proper medical management including risk factors control, lowering-lipid drugs and strict control of arterial hypertension have reduced the incidence of strokes associated to asymptomatic carotid disease challenging established practice. Need to identify vulnerable lesions prone to develop thromboembolic brain events and also vulnerable patients at a higher risk of stroke is necessary and essential to further improve effectiveness of our interventions. After review of published literature on natural history of asymptomatic carotid stenosis, diagnostic methods to identify plaque vulnerability and present-day results of both endarterectomy and stenting, a strategy for management of asymptomatic carotid stenosis is suggested aiming to reduce unnecessary interventions and effectively contribute to stroke prevention.

  • Governing migrants through the Norwegian Introduction Programme
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on the Norwegian Introduction Programme for newly arrived immigrants and refugees. With its implementation in 2004, the Introduction Programme represents one of the most significant policy measures initiated by the state for new migrants in Norway. The Introduction Programme combine two important official goals, namely labour market participation and immigrant integration into the receiving society. The aim of the overall thesis is to examine how the Introduction Programme in Norway can be understood in relation to different power perspectives. One of the main perspectives is Foucault’s idea of governmentality, supplemented with the perspectives of neoliberalism and ethnification. Inspired by Carol Lee Bacchi’s social policy analysis approach, one of the main points of departure of the thesis, is to examine what problem formulation the Introduction Programme is an answer to. The study focuses primarily on how the Norwegian Introduction Programme is justified, designed, structured and framed to facilitate the integration of new migrants in society in general, and in the labour market specifically. The thesis is based on four studies which have all critically examined the Introduction Programme from different comparative and theoretical perspectives. Comparisons are made between different social policy measures in Norway and between seemingly ‘similar’ policies in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The method employed for all four articles is based on public document analysis, which falls within the broader categorization of qualitative text analysis. The main aim of Study I is to provide an in-depth understanding of the underlying ideology of two Norwegian post-immigration measures; the Introduction Programme and the financial support scheme for voluntary immigrant organisations. Study II addresses the justifications for implementing the Introduction Programme for newly arrived immigrants and refugees in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The aim of Study III is to explore how policy texts and the policy development process when establishing the Introduction Programme and the Qualification Programme have differently constructed the identity of their target groups. Study IV sets out to critically examine if and eventually how different ideas of empowerment are embedded in the design and structure of the introduction programmes in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. In sum, it is possible to conclude that the Norwegian Introduction Programme can be viewed as an arena in which the subjectivity of new migrants is being shaped to influence their actions and beliefs in specific ways. By participating in the programme, the target group is being governed, disciplined and shaped into becoming idealized citizens, and for the state, an ideal citizen is one who is employed, active in terms of being economically and culturally assimilated. Moreover, the ideal citizen is expected to be active, self-governing and self-sufficient. In addition, the thesis also demonstrates that ethnification of the target group has implications for how the Introduction Programme has been designed and shaped.

  • Pericyte Microvesicles as Plasma Biomarkers Reflecting Brain Microvascular Signaling in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Stroke. - 0039-2499. ; 55:3, s. 558-568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Blood-based biomarkers have the potential to reflect cerebrovascular signaling after microvascular injury; yet, the detection of cell-specific signaling has proven challenging. Microvesicles retain parental cell surface antigens allowing detection of cell-specific signaling encoded in their cargo. In ischemic stroke, the progression of pathology involves changes in microvascular signaling whereby brain pericytes, perivascular cells wrapping the microcapillaries, are one of the early responders to the ischemic insult. Intercepting the pericyte signaling response peripherally by isolating pericyte-derived microvesicles may provide not only diagnostic information on microvascular injury but also enable monitoring of important pathophysiological mechanisms. METHODS: Plasma samples were collected from patients with acute ischemic stroke (n=39) at 3 time points after stroke onset: 0 to 6 hours, 12 to 24 hours, and 2 to 6 days, and compared with controls (n=39). Pericyte-derived microvesicles were isolated based on cluster of differentiation 140b expression and quantified by flow cytometry. The protein content was evaluated using a proximity extension assay, and vascular signaling pathways were examined using molecular signature hallmarks and gene ontology. RESULTS: In this case-control study, patients with acute ischemic stroke showed significantly increased numbers of pericyte-derived microvesicles (median, stroke versus controls) at 12 to 24 hours (1554 versus 660 microvesicles/μL; P=0.0041) and 2 to 6 days after stroke (1346 versus 660 microvesicles/μL; P=0.0237). Their proteome revealed anti-inflammatory properties mediated via downregulation of Kirsten rat sarcoma virus and IL (interleukin)-6/JAK/STAT3 signaling at 0 to 6 hours, but proangiogenic as well as proinflammatory signals at 12 to 24 hours. Between 2 and 6 days, proteins were mainly associated with vascular remodeling as indicated by activation of Hedgehog signaling in addition to proangiogenic signals. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate that the plasma of patients with acute ischemic stroke reflects (1) an early and time-dependent increase of pericyte-derived microvesicles and (2) changes in the protein cargo of microvesicles over time indicating cell signaling specifically related to inflammation and vascular remodeling.

  • Nature of science in early years science teaching
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Early Childhood Education Research Journal. - : Taylor and Francis Ltd.. - 1350-293X .- 1752-1807. ; 29:5, s. 795-807
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The research field of science education has gathered questions about what science is, how scientific knowledge is developed and in what ways humans are involved in these processes under the umbrella concept ‘nature of science’ (NOS). Previous research has suggested that teaching ought to focus much more on these issues, but so far the focus has been on older children and students, while there is a lack of research on NOS teaching for the youngest children (up to six years). In this conceptual article,we suggest that NOS should be taught from the outset, and thus be part of science teaching in the early years. We put forward arguments as to why this early introduction coupled to the overall values and aims of democracy and social justice is important, and elaborate on the kind of NOS issues that could be included in science teaching aimed at the youngest children.
