  • End-expiratory lung volume and ventilation distribution with different continuous positive airway pressure systems in volunteers.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Acta anaesthesiologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 1399-6576 .- 0001-5172. ; 55:2, s. 157-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) has been shown to improve oxygenation and a number of different CPAP systems are available. The aim of this study was to assess lung volume and ventilation distribution using three different CPAP techniques. Methods: A high-flow CPAP system (HF-CPAP), an ejector-driven system (E-CPAP) and CPAP using a Servo 300 ventilator (V-CPAP) were randomly applied at 0, 5 and 10 cmH2O in 14 volunteers. End-expiratory lung volume (EELV) was measured by N2 dilution at baseline; changes in EELV and tidal volume distribution were assessed by electric impedance tomography. Results: Higher end-expiratory and mean airway pressures were found using the E-CPAP vs. the HF-CPAP and the V-CPAP system (P<0.01). EELV increased markedly from baseline, 0 cmH2O, with increased CPAP levels: 1110±380, 1620±520 and 1130±350 ml for HF-, E- and V-CPAP, respectively, at 10 cmH2O. A larger fraction of the increase in EELV occurred for all systems in ventral compared with dorsal regions (P<0.01). In contrast, tidal ventilation was increasingly directed toward dorsal regions with increasing CPAP levels (P<0.01). The increase in EELV as well as the tidal volume redistribution were more pronounced with the E-CPAP system as compared with both the HF-CPAP and the V-CPAP systems (P<0.05) at 10 cmH2O. Conclusion: EELV increased more in ventral regions with increasing CPAP levels, independent of systems, leading to a redistribution of tidal ventilation toward dorsal regions. Different CPAP systems resulted in different airway pressure profiles, which may result in different lung volume expansion and tidal volume distribution.

  • Invasion routes, current and historical distribution of the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis H. Milne Edwards, 1853) in Sweden.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Aquatic Invasions. - 1818-5487. ; 5:4, s. 387-396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Single specimens of the Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis H. Milne Edwards, 1853, have been regularly reported along the western and eastern coasts of Sweden since the 1930´s. The crab has most likely been brought from overseas via the transfer of ship’s ballast water or secondarily introduced from its key European distribution areas. Since 2001 a sharp increase in the occurrence of the mitten crab has been noticed in Swedish inland waters, but the dispersal routes and distribution of the species into Sweden remain poorly known. Here we document the current and historical distribution of the Chinese mitten crab in Sweden and assess possible invasion routes. A special focus is put on the historical occurrence of crabs in Lake Vänern, which empties into the Skagerrak/North Sea and Lake Mälaren, which connects to the Baltic Sea. The existing time series available for the mitten crab from the two lakes shows a large variation in dispersal pattern between different areas within each lake. In order to detect and monitor outbreaks of the mitten crab in Sweden, an internet based reporting system was created in 2007. Museum collections and reports from the general public throughout Sweden were compared with the known occurrence of mitten crabs in Lake Vänern and Lake Mälaren. During the study, the web-based reporting system was not advertised and the general public did not get paid for reporting the information. Population densities of the crab occurred “in peaks” and unevenly over the last decade in both lakes, suggesting a pulse invasion instead of a constant supply by migration. Significant difference in male and female occurrence together with few transport possibilities between lakes suggests different invasion routes for the crabs. Reports from the general public throughout Sweden coincide with the observations from local fishermen in Lake Mälaren and Lake Vänern. Data on occurrence and abundance are discussed in relation to a potential reproduction area on the western coast of Sweden.

  • University–industry linkages and absorptive capacity: an empirical analysis of China's manufacturing industry
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Economics of Innovation and New Technology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1043-8599 .- 1476-8364. ; 21:8, s. 837-852
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the contribution of universities to innovative performance in China’s manufacturing sector. Our empirical analysis is based on a matched dataset comprising about 20 000 large and medium sized companies aggregated at the three-digit industry level and information on university knowledge output for 31 provinces between 1998 and 2004. We show that universities’ impact on commercial innovation varies with the type of activity performed and is contingent on the manufacturing sector’s investment in absorptive capacity. In addition, our results confirm organizational theory stating that there is a complementary relationship between capabilities to acquire and assimilate external knowledge on the one hand and the capacity to transform and exploit this knowledge on the other.

  • Nonlinear wave interaction and spin models in the magnetohydrodynamic regime
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - Bristol, UK : Institute of Physics Pub.. - 1367-2630. ; 13:August, s. 083017-08331
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we consider the influence on the electron spin in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) regime. Recently developed models that include spin-velocity correlations are taken as the starting point. A theoretical argument is presented, suggesting that in the MHD regime a single-fluid electron model with spin correlations is equivalent to a model with spin-up and spin-down electrons constituting different fluids, but where the spin-velocity correlations are omitted. Three-wave interaction of two shear Alfven waves and a compressional Alfven wave is then taken as a model problem to evaluate the asserted equivalence. The theoretical argument turns out to be supported, because the predictions of the two models agree completely. Furthermore, the three-wave coupling coefficients obey the Manley-Rowe relations, which further support the soundness of the models and the validity of the assumptions made in the derivation. Finally, we point out that the proposed two-fluid model can be incorporated in standard particle-in-cell schemes with only minor modifications.
