  • Forbidden hugs in pandemic times II. The luminous red nova variety AT 2020hat and AT 2020kog
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 647
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the results of our monitoring campaigns of the luminous red novae (LRNe) AT 2020hat in NGC 5068 and AT 2020kog in NGC 6106. The two objects were imaged (and detected) before their discovery by routine survey operations. They show a general trend of slow luminosity rise, lasting at least a few months. The subsequent major LRN outbursts were extensively followed in photometry and spectroscopy. The light curves present an initial short-duration peak, followed by a redder plateau phase. AT 2020kog is a moderately luminous event peaking at similar to 7 x 10(40) erg s(-1), while AT 2020hat is almost one order of magnitude fainter than AT 2020kog, although it is still more luminous than V838 Mon. In analogy with other LRNe, the spectra of AT 2020kog change significantly with time. They resemble those of type TM supernovae at early phases, then they become similar to those of K-type stars during the plateau, and to M-type stars at very late phases. In contrast, AT 2020hat already shows a redder continuum at early epochs, and its spectrum shows the late appearance of molecular bands. A moderate-resolution spectrum of AT 2020hat taken at +37 d after maximum shows a forest of narrow P Cygni lines of metals with velocities of 180 km s(-1), along with an Ha emission with a full-width at half-maximum velocity of 250 km s(-1). For AT 2020hat, a robust constraint on its quiescent progenitor is provided by archival images of the Hubble Space Telescope. The progenitor is clearly detected as a mid-K type star, with an absolute magnitude of M-F606W = -3.33 +/- 0.09 mag and a colour of F606W - F814W = 1.14 +/- 0.05 mag, which are inconsistent with the expectations from a massive star that could later produce a core-collapse supernova. Although quite peculiar, the two objects nicely match the progenitor versus light curve absolute magnitude correlations discussed in the literature.

  • ESS DTL Tuning Using Machine Learning Methods
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IPAC2021. - 2673-5490. - 9783954502141 ; , s. 1872-1875

    • The European Spallation Source, currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, will be the world's most powerful neutron source. It is driven by a proton linac with a current of 62.5 mA, 2.86 ms long pulses at 14 Hz. The final section of its normal-conducting front-end consists of a 39 m long drift tube linac (DTL) divided into five tanks, designed to accelerate the proton beam from 3.6 MeV to 90 MeV. The high beam current and power impose challenges to the design and tuning of the machine and the RF amplitude and phase have to be set within 1% and 1 ∘ of the design values. The usual method used to define the RF set-point is signature matching, which can be a time consuming and challenging process, and new techniques to meet the growing complexity of accelerator facilities are highly desirable. In this paper we study the usage of Machine Learning to determine the RF optimum amplitude and phase. The data from a simulated phase scan is fed into an artificial neural network in order to identify the needed changes to achieve the best tuning. Our test for the ESS DTL1 shows promising results, and further development of the method will be outlined.

The usual method used to define the RF set-point is signature matching, which can be a challenging process, and new techniques to meet the growing complexity of accelerator facilities are highly desirable. In this paper we study the use of ML to determine the RF optimum amplitude and phase, using a single pass of the beam through the ESS DTL1 tank. This novel method is compared with the more established methods using scans over RF phase, providing similar results in terms of accuracy for simulated data with errors. We also discuss the results and future extension of the method to the whole ESS DTL.

  • Global dataset of soil organic carbon in tidal marshes
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scientific Data. - : Springer Nature. - 2052-4463. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tidal marshes store large amounts of organic carbon in their soils. Field data quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks provide an important resource for researchers, natural resource managers, and policy-makers working towards the protection, restoration, and valuation of these ecosystems. We collated a global dataset of tidal marsh soil organic carbon (MarSOC) from 99 studies that includes location, soil depth, site name, dry bulk density, SOC, and/or soil organic matter (SOM). The MarSOC dataset includes 17,454 data points from 2,329 unique locations, and 29 countries. We generated a general transfer function for the conversion of SOM to SOC. Using this data we estimated a median (± median absolute deviation) value of 79.2 ± 38.1 Mg SOC ha−1 in the top 30 cm and 231 ± 134 Mg SOC ha−1 in the top 1 m of tidal marsh soils globally. This data can serve as a basis for future work, and may contribute to incorporation of tidal marsh ecosystems into climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and policies.

  • The Olfactomedin-4-Defined Human Neutrophil Subsets Differ in Proteomic Profile in Healthy Individuals and Patients with Septic Shock
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innate Immunity. - : Karger. - 1662-811X .- 1662-8128. ; 15:1, s. 351-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The specific granule glycoprotein olfactomedin-4 (Olfm4) marks a subset (1-70%) of human neutrophils and the Olfm4-high (Olfm4-H) proportion has been found to correlate with septic shock severity. The aim of this study was to decipher proteomic differences between the subsets in healthy individuals, hypothesizing that Olfm4-H neutrophils have a proteomic profile distinct from that of Olfm4 low (Olfm4-L) neutrophils. We then extended the investigation to septic shock. A novel protocol for the preparation of fixed, antibody-stained, and sorted neutrophils for LC-MS/MS was developed. In healthy individuals, 39 proteins showed increased abundance in Olfm4-H, including the small GTPases Rab3d and Rab11a. In Olfm4-L, 52 proteins including neutrophil defensin alpha 4, CXCR1, Rab3a, and S100-A7 were more abundant. The data suggest differences in important neutrophil proteins that might impact immunological processes. However, in vitro experiments revealed no apparent difference in the ability to control bacteria nor produce oxygen radicals. In subsets isolated from patients with septic shock, 24 proteins including cytochrome b-245 chaperone 1 had significantly higher abundance in Olfm4-H and 30 in Olfm4-L, including Fc receptor proteins. There was no correlation between Olfm4-H proportion and septic shock severity, but plasma Olfm4 concentration was elevated in septic shock. Thus, the Olfm4-H and Olfm4-L neutrophils have different proteomic profiles, but there was no evident functional significance of the differences in septic shock.
