  • Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) analysis of coagulation in whole blood with application in prothrombin time assay
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Biosensors & bioelectronics. - 0956-5663 .- 1873-4235. ; 14:8-9, s. 671-682
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is previously shown that surface plasmon resonance (SPR) can be used to study blood plasma coagulation. This work explores the use of this technique for the analysis of tissue factor induced coagulation, i.e. prothrombin time (PT) analysis, of whole blood and plasma. The reference method was nephelometry. The prothrombin time analysis by SPR was performed by mixing two volumes of blood/plasma, one volume of thromboplastin, and one volume of CaCl2 solution directly on a sensor surface. The measurements show good agreement between nephelometry and SPR plasma analysis and also between SPR plasma and whole blood analysis. The effect of anticoagulant treatment on the clotting times was significant both quantitatively and qualitatively. The impact on the SPR signal of different physiological events in the coagulation process is discussed, and tentative interpretations of the sensorgram features are given. The major advantage of the SPR method compared to nephelometry is the possibility to perform analysis on whole blood instead of plasma. In conclusion, SPR is a promising method for whole blood coagulation analysis.

  • Effects of red clover silage and ageing time on sensory characteristics and cooking losses of loin (M. longissimus dorsi) from Hampshire crosses with and without the RN− allele
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Food Quality and Preference. - : Elsevier. - 0950-3293 .- 1873-6343. ; 10:4-5, s. 299-303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study concerns the effects of red clover silage (silage) and ageing time on sensory characteristics and cooking loss of loin from Hampshire crosses with and without the RN− allele. Half of each litter received conventional feed and the other half conventional feed with admixed red clover silage. Loins were aged at 4°C (4 and 8 days), prepared at 150° to 68°C and sensory evaluated by descriptive analyses. RN− carriers had loins of higher meat taste intensity and a more acidulous taste than non-carriers. Meat taste intensity and tenderness increased as ageing time increased while acidulous taste decreased. Loins, aged 4 days, from conventionally fed pigs were juicier than those of silage-fed pigs. RN− carriers had a greater total cooking loss than non-carriers

  • In-plane permeability measurements on fiber reinforcements by the multi-cavity parallel flow technique
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Polymer Composites. - : Wiley. - 0272-8397 .- 1548-0569. ; 20:1, s. 146-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This report discusses the advantages and drawbacks of the multi-cavity parallel flow technique for permeability measurements. An experimental series with repeated measurements on material from the same roll shows that the repeatability of the technique is very good considering the manufacturing variability of the fabric. The measured standard deviation in the repeatability study is about 10%. It is, however, shown that the permeability can vary considerably- between reinforcements of similar geometry. Furthermore, computer simulations were used to estimate the errors when highly anisotropic materials are oriented at an angle to the material principal direction in the parallel flow technique. The conclusion based on the simulations is that the length to width ratio of the cavity should be larger than the anisotropy of the reinforcement for an acceptable error.

  • Dipole moment of nanoparticles at interfaces
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 83:2, s. 380-383
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The properties of heterogeneous interfaces are modified essentially by the presence of nanoparticles. We provide a model and give spectroscopic evidence that nanoscale clusters exist which have a metallic core and a shell of an almost perfect oxide. Such clusters produce a large dipole moment which manifests itself as shifts in core levels as seen by photoelectron spectroscopy, as well as non-Ohmic rectifying behavior in the device electrical properties.

  • Effect of voids on failure mechanisms in RTM laminates
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Composites Science And Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0266-3538 .- 1879-1050. ; 53:2, s. 241-249
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most studies on the effects of voids aim for determination of the relationship between void content and the fracture property of interest. The effect of voids on the mechanisms of transverse failure was therefore investigated for predominantly unidirectional resin transfer moulded laminates of glass-fibre-fabric/vinylester. Laminates with the highest average content of voids had a transverse strain to failure as high as 2% whereas low void content laminates failed at 0.3%. Only a few large and well-defined transverse cracks formed in low void content laminates before final failure. Multiple transverse cracks with irregular shape as well as numerous smaller cracks formed in the high void content laminates. The irregularity of these cracks resulted in lower stress concentration and stress level in the small amount of weft bundles orientated in the loading direction. A simple model was developed in order to demonstrate this and explain the high strain to failure of high void content laminates.
