  • Exploring barriers to collaborative innovation in supply chains : a study of a supplier and two of its industrial customers
  • 2023
  • In: Business Process Management Journal. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1463-7154 .- 1758-4116. ; 29:8, s. 25-47
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose is to identify and explore barriers to overcome for developing collaborative innovation between a global service supplier and two of its industrial customers in Sweden. Design/methodology/approach: The research had an action-based research approach in which the researchers were interacting and collaborating with the practitioners in the companies. The empirical part includes primary data from multiple interviews, and two workshops with dialogues with participants from the involved companies. The use of complementary data collection methods gave rich input to understanding the context for collaborative innovation, and to uncovering barriers, to develop solutions for collaborative innovation. The empirical barriers were analysed using theoretically derived barriers from a literature review. The analysis generated four broad themes of barriers which were discussed and led to conclusions and theoretical and practical implications on: the customer's safety culture, the business model, the parties' understanding of innovation and the management of collaborative innovation in supply chains. Findings: The thematic analysis generated four broad themes: the customer's safety culture, the business model, the parties' understanding of innovation and the management of collaborative innovation. These themes where analysed using theoretically derived barriers from a literature review. The industrial context, the understanding of innovation and its management created barriers. Originality/value: The unique access to the service supplier and its two independent industrial customers adds a rich contextual framing to the process of identifying and exploring the barriers to collaborative innovation. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of an industrial business context, the business logic in terms of business models and for the understanding and management of collaborative innovation.

  • Clinicians' psychological empowerment to engage in management as part of their daily work
  • 2022
  • In: Journal of Health Organization & Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1477-7266 .- 1758-7247. ; 36:9, s. 272-287
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of the article is to analyze how physicians and nurses, as the two major health care professions, experience psychological empowerment for managerial work. Design/methodology/approach: The study was designed as a qualitative interview study at four primary care centers (PCCs) in Sweden. In total, 47 interviews were conducted, mainly with physicians and nurses. The first inductive analysis led us to the concept of psychological empowerment, which was used in the next deductive step of the analysis. Findings: The study showed that both professions experienced self-determination for managerial work, but that nurses were more dependent on structural empowerment. Nurses experienced that they had competence for managerial work, whereas physicians were more ignorant of such competence. Nurses used managerial work to create impact on the conditions for their clinical work, whereas physicians experienced impact independently. Both nurses and physicians experienced managerial work as meaningful, but less meaningful than nurses and physicians' clinical work. Practical implications: For an effective health care system, structural changes in terms of positions, roles, and responsibilities can be an important route for especially nurses' psychological empowerment. Originality/value: The qualitative method provided a complementary understanding of psychological empowerment on how psychological empowerment interacted with other factors. One such aspect was nurses' higher dependence on structural empowerment, but the most important aspect was that both physicians and nurses experienced that managerial work was less meaningful than clinical work. This implies that psychological empowerment for managerial work may only make a difference if psychological empowerment does not compete with physicians' and nurses' clinical work.

  • Patients' perceptions of quality in Swedish primary care - a study of differences between private and public ownership
  • 2021
  • In: Journal of Health Organization & Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1477-7266 .- 1758-7247. ; 35:9, s. 85-100
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • PURPOSE: The purpose of the paper is to describe and analyze differences in patients' quality perceptions of private and public primary care centers in Sweden.DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The article explores the differences in quality perceptions between patients of public and private primary care centers based on data from a large patient survey in Sweden. The survey covers seven dimensions, and in this paper the measure Overall impression was used for the comparison. With more than 80,000 valid responses, the survey covers all primary care centers in Sweden which allowed for a detailed analysis of differences in quality perceptions among patients from the different categories of owners.FINDINGS: The article contributes with a detailed description of different types of private owners: not-for-profit and for profit, as well as corporate groups and independent care centers. The results show a higher quality perception for independent centers compared to both public and corporate groups.RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS: The small number of not-for-profit centers (21 out of 1,117 centers) does not allow for clear conclusions for this group. The results, however, indicate an even higher patient quality perception for not-for-profit centers. The study focus on describing differences in quality perceptions between the owner categories. Future research can contribute with explanations to why independent care centers receive higher patient satisfaction.SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS: The results from the study have policy implications both in a Swedish as well as international perspective. The differentiation between different types of private owners made in this paper opens up for interesting discussions on privatization of healthcare and how it affects patient satisfaction.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The main contribution of the paper is the detailed comparison of different categories of private owners and the public owners.

  • Backers’ crowdfunding journey – An engagement perspective
  • 2021
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Crowdfunding refers to accumulating small sums of money from the general public through the Internet for a collective larger amount to fund small or medium-sized ventures in exchange for some benefit. The contribution can be as a donation (for no material reward), a purchase (for getting a reward in return), debt (to get money returned), or equity (for sharing future profit). The three main actors in crowdfunding are the initiators (the venturers), the backers (the crowd members who fund), and the crowdfunding platforms (the intermediaries). The crowdfunding campaign’s survival and success depends on engagement from the crowd. Using a qualitative research method, this dissertation aimed to understand the backers’ engagement with four crowdfunding campaigns selected from the leading crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter, through processual analysis. Buildingon the integrative framework of service-dominant logic, engagement, and customer journey, the underlying mechanism of the backers’ engagement at the personal (micro) and interpersonal (meso) levels were explored. Based on the motivation and contribution pattern, the backers were segmented into four engagement roles: benefactors, patrons, shoppers, and utilisers. A deeper analysis showed how the engagement intensity, duration, valence, and engagement properties shaped over time across these roles. The insights from the findings in the dissertation carry managerial and policy implications.

  • A Multidimensional Approach for Assessing Technological Development Projects – The Example of Electric Road Systems
  • 2020
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) has become a standard approach to assessment of technologicaldevelopment projects. The origin of TRL is the US moon rocket programs. However, to develop and put intopractice advanced technology projects, also other aspects are important to evaluate in a systematic way. This paper provides a tentative analytical model of four main perspectives to analyze readiness levels oftechnology projects; Technology Readiness Level (TRL), Political Readiness Level (PRL), Social andSocietal Readiness Level (SRL), and Commercial Readiness Level (CRL).To be successful we need to explore and understand the process, interconnectivities between and the impactbased on all those four aspects in an integrated way.

  • Exploring battery-swapping for electric vehicles in China 1.0
  • 2021
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In this report we explore the situation in China vis-à-vis battery-swapping technology, its history, the current level of achievements, direction of the technology and its implications for society. We have chosen to explore battery-swapping solutions because they are complementary to stationary charging piles, and because their introduction in China has been ongoing since 2010. We want to understand the motivation, drives and barriers to this development and explore the underlying technical as well as the business aspects of establishing and expanding these new solutions. As researchers, it is our ambition to explore and understand the underling aspects, motives and drivers as well as conditions, challenges and consequences, in this case, the introduction of battery-swapping systems. Battery-swapping is not new. It was explored in Europe, Israel and the USA before China took the initiative to develop large scale swapping systems. This is explored in the Appendix to provide a historical and context-based understanding of its origin and global status in order to better understand the Chinese situation. Our focus is initially on new energy vehicles (NEV), more specific the segment of small electric cars. We are aware that there are also buses, trucks, heavy duty vehicles, small sized two- and three wheelers etc. that use battery-swapping technology, however, they are not focused upon in this paper.

  • Från värnplikt till frivillighet : Hur en ny reformidé mötte den etablerade praktiken i Försvarsmakten
  • 2020
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In the summer of 2009, the Swedish Parliament decided to suspend the century-oldpractice of military conscription, and introduce all-volunteer forces. One year later,1 July 2010, the Swedish Armed Forces became an organization "as any other", thatshould attract, recruit and try to maintain its employees. The process of this reformis the topic of this dissertation.Previous research has shown that reforms are quite difficult to conduct, as theyrarely go exactly as the reformers planned: planned changes are often accompaniedby unintended changes (Brunsson and Olsen, 1990). In order to describe all changesthat take place during attempts to reform, a translation model (Czarniawska andJoerges, 1996) has been used. The process of change was seen as a travel for thereform idea from its carriers to those who were to put it in practice in local units.Even if local practices are usually well-established, such practices are notunchangeable, especially if a new reform idea raises interest. The aim of the study isto contribute with increased understanding of reform processes by following theidea of voluntarism into an established practice of conscription. The process of reform has been studied in various places: in the headquarters, during the meetings between the top leadership and commanders of local units, andin the local units. Appropriate field study techniques were used: interviews, directobservation, shadowing and document analysis. Fieldwork started in 2010 andcontinued until 2015. The analysis of the collected field material followed theprinciple of abduction, i.e. an iterative interpretation of field material and previousresearch results, using the translation model as a frame of interpretation. The idea of reform has been inspired by an international trend of moving from massarmies staffed by conscripts to all-volunteer forces. It was then edited to fit theSwedish situation, and started its travel from idea-carriers to idea-users. On its wayit has been translated in quite a few ways. Sometimes it was seen as an attempt atmodernization, other times as an increase in cost-effectiveness, as a culturaltransformation, as an attempt at professionalization of services, or as entering thecompetition among employers in the labor market. Even translations that shared thesame label (for example, competition or cultural transformation) could beinterpreted in detail in quite different ways at different local units. Some attempts at integration of different translations failed; demands and expectationsin conflict with one another, or a translation of the reform idea was incompatiblewith the local practice. Such situations can be seen as paradoxical but, asLuhmann (1995) pointed out, a paradox is often perceived as paralyzing by the observers, while the actors feel mobilized to de-paradoxify them by appropriate actions. The study shows that the roles of idea-carriers and idea-users were not clearlyseparated: the same persons could engage in both activities, depending on thecontext. A suggestion for future studies could be to explore the activities, instead ofthe roles, which are flexible, and also pay attention to the new, digital "means oftransportation" – especially through the social media.

  • Organizing in crisis : a study on what went on within higher education during the covid pandemic.
  • 2022
  • In: NFF 2022 Conference Papers.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • When the corona pandemic began in early 2020, universities as well as other sectors in society, were profoundly affected. Higher education was expected to continue to work as usual, except that everything should be conducted digitally. In this crisis, teachers received a “carte blanche” from management to handle the situation in any way they found appropriate (Hjelm-Lidholm, Mauléon, Müllern & Solli, 2021). However, the support functions at the universities (student support, administrators, university management) did not show the same ability to adapt to the crisis. Our study (Hjelm-Lidholm, Mauléon, Müllern & Solli, 2021) shows that although teachers acknowledged how they were the ones who had the know-how of handling the dramatic shift from on-site teaching to off-site teaching they felt they weren’t provided with appropriate support in order to being able to conduct this transformation in an efficient way (Hjelm-Lidholm, Mauléon, Müllern & Solli, 2021). The lack of appropriate support from management and other support functions made the dramatic shift in many cases challenging for the teachers. One teacher described it as laying out the rails whilst the train was moving (Hjelm-Lidholm, Mauléon, Müllern & Solli, 2021). In these occasions teachers turned to their closest colleagues to find support in the often chaotic situation. What is interesting here is how we found that the strong bureaucratic governance of universities (as well as other public institutions) were either not prepared or appropriate for handling the crisis. The bureaucratic governance system, we found, rather obstructed than supported the crisis driven digital transformation of teaching from on-site to off-site.This paper allows for broader reflections on how professionals interact with managers in times of crisis, but also on the role of digitalization in the continued change and development of universities. It is our hope that this paper will spark a debate on the role of university teachers (professionals) in the strategic management of universities, considering the clear trend towards increased centralization and bureaucratization.
