• Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
• 2006
• Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
• Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
• We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • Measurements of (XcJ)-> K+K-K+K- decays
• 2006
• Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 642:3, s. 197-202
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Using 14M psi(2S) events taken with the BESII detector, chi(cJ) -> 2(K+K-) decays are studied. For the four-kaon final state, the branching fractions are B(chi(c0,1,2) ->.2(K+K-)) = (3.48 +/- 0.23 +/- 0.47) x 10(-3), (0.70 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3), and (2.17 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.31) x 10(-3). For the phi K+K- final state, the branching fractions, which are measured for the first time, are B(chi(c0,1,2) -> phi K+K-) = (1.03 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.15) x 10(-3), (0.46 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.06) x 10(-3), and (1.67 +/- 0.26 +/- 0.24) x 10(-4). For the phi phi final state, B(chi(c0,2) -> phi phi) = (0.94 +/- 0.21 +/- 0.13) x 10(-3) and (1.70 +/- 0.30 +/- 0.25) x 10(-3).

• Self-Assembled Core-Shell Polymer Dielectric Prepared by Solution Casting Process
• 2009
• Ingår i: Integrated Ferroelectrics. - : Taylor andamp; Francis: STM, Behavioural Science and Public Health Titles. - 1058-4587 .- 1607-8489. ; 113, s. 1-8
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Giant permittivity at 1 MHz, which slightly changes with temperatures, is observed in a polymer composite. The dielectric spectroscopy demonstrates that the samples are electrically heterogeneous. The microstructure observation and the ingredient analysis evidence they self assemble the conducting cores surrounded by the insulating shells. The giant-dielectric phenomenon is therefore attributed to the percolation effect. The electrically heterogeneous microstructure with effective permittivity values about 10 000 can be fabricated by a simple solution casting process in air. The composite is an attractive option to the currently used printing dielectric and the future flexible electronics.

• Smoking, snuff dipping and the risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis--a prospective cohort study
• 2006
• Ingår i: Neuroepidemiology. - : S. Karger AG. - 0251-5350 .- 1423-0208. ; 27:4, s. 217-221
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Background: Little is known about the etiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The association between cigarette smoking, but not other types of smoking and snuff dipping, and the risk of ALS has been evaluated in several epidemiologic studies. The findings were inconclusive. Methods: We studied the association of smoking and snuff dipping with the risk of ALS in the Swedish Construction Workers Cohort, which includes 280,558 male construction workers enrolled between 1978 and 1993 with detailed information on tobacco use. Incident cases of ALS were identified through cross-linkage to the Swedish Inpatient Register. Relative risks and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. Results: After a mean follow-up duration of 19.6 years, we identified 160 incident cases of ALS through 2004. Compared with non-tobacco use, the relative risk of ALS was 0.8 (95% CI 0.6–1.1) for tobacco smoking and 0.6 (95% CI 0.3–1.5) for snuff dipping, respectively. For tobacco smoking, further stratified analyses of smoking status or types of tobacco smoking did not reveal any excess risks in any strata. Conclusions: Our study provides no evidence that smoking or snuff dipping is associated with an increased ALS risk among men.

• Experimental and theoretical study of the removal of sulphur and fluorine from pickling hydroxide sludge generated in the stainless steel industry
• 2005
• Ingår i: Global Symposium on Recycling, Waste Treatment, and Clean Technology (REWAS '04). - : Minerals, Metals & Materials Society. - 8495520060 ; , s. 2017-2026
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• Pickling hydroxide sludge (pickling sludge for short) generated in the stainless steel industry in Sweden is currently dumped in special landfill areas. After filtration the sludge contains 50-60 wt-% moisture. After drying at 120C it contains about 26 wt-% of metal oxides, such as Fe 2O3, NiO and Cr2O3 and 43 wt-% of CaF2. In order to facilitate the recycling of pickling sludge and/or to recover fluorine as an HF acid, different scale experimental studies to remove sulphur and/or fluorine directly from the sludge have been carried out. Theoretical thermodynamic calculation results show that the simultaneous removal of both sulphur and fluorine is possible when the temperature is above 1500°C under the oxidizing condition and in the presence of water vapour in the system. Experimental results show that the elimination degrees of sulphur and fluorine for pickling sludge can reach 99 wt-% and 84 wt-%, respectively. These results demonstrate that potentially feasible methods for removing sulphur and/or fluorine from the sludge have been found.

• Ethanol intake and the risk of pancreatic cancer in the European prospective investigation into cancer and nutrition (EPIC)
• 2009
• Ingår i: Cancer Causes and Control. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-7225 .- 0957-5243. ; 20:5, s. 785-794
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• To examine the association of baseline and lifetime ethanol intake with cancer of the pancreas in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Included in this analysis were 478,400 subjects, of whom detailed information on the intake of alcoholic beverages at baseline and over lifetime was collected between 1992 and 2000. During a median follow-up time of 8.9 years, 555 non-endocrine pancreatic cancer cases were observed. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were used to examine the association of ethanol intake at recruitment and average lifetime ethanol intake and pancreatic cancer adjusting for smoking, height, weight, and history of diabetes. Overall, neither ethanol intake at recruitment (relative risk (RR) = 0.94, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.69-1.27 comparing 30+ g/d vs. 0.1-4.9 g/d) nor average lifetime ethanol intake (RR = 0.95, 95% CI 0.65-1.39) was associated with pancreatic cancer risk. High lifetime ethanol intake from spirits/liquor at recruitment tended to be associated with a higher risk (RR = 1.40, 95% CI 0.93-2.10 comparing 10+ g/d vs. 0.1-4.9 g/d), but no associations were observed for wine and beer consumption. These results suggest no association of alcohol consumption with the risk of pancreatic cancer.
