- A randomized trial comparing 3 manufacturing consistency lots of a combination hepatitis A/hepatitis B vaccine to each other and to hepatitis A vaccine and hepatitis B vaccine given separately and concurrently was done to evaluate safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity. Healthy volunteers >/=11 years of age were divided into 4 groups. Each of 3 groups received a separate consistency lot of the combination vaccine, and 1 group received separate but concurrent injections of hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines. Injections were given at weeks 0 and 24. The combination vaccine was generally well tolerated. The hepatitis A portion of the combination vaccine produced clinically acceptable high seropositivity rates 4 and 52 weeks after the first injection. The hepatitis B portion of the vaccine did not produce clinically acceptable seropositivity rates 4 weeks after the second injection. Lack of antibody production may be attributed, at least in part, to immunologic interference.

- Doping CeO2 with for example, Ca gives an enhanced reactivity toward reduction of SO2 by CO, and total combustion of methane. Theoretical modeling using static minimizations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the doped (110) face in combination with ab initio quantum chemical cluster models shows large effects on the Ce(IV)/Ce(III) balance due to the doping. Computed oxygen-to-cerium charge-transfer energies are strongly reduced as a result of the introduction of defects and oxygen vacancies, but not sufficiently to explain the observed reactivities. The structures resulting from the MD simulations for both the doped and undoped material are in good agreement with recent experimental pulsed neutron scattering results.

- Reaction of ferrocene (or 1,1'-dimethylferrocene) with P4S10 yielded R'P(S)S2P(S)R' (R' = ferrocenyl) (or the analogous dimethylferrocene species). This compound reacted with catechols to form R'P(S)O2C2 ring systems and with [PtCl2(PR(3))(2)] (R = Et or Bu(II)) to give [R'PS3Pt(PR(3))(2)]. The new compounds have been characterised spectroscopically with illustrative examples having been fully studied by X-ray crystallography.

- The synthesis of 2,4-(naphthalene-1,8-diyl)-1,3,2,4-dithiadiphosphetane 2,4-disulfides from P4S10 and the appropriate naphthalene compound has been accomplished. The reactions of naphthalene-1,8-diyl-1,3,2,4-dithiadiphosphetane 2,4-disulfide with methanol and 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol have been performed. The crystal structure of a naphthalene relative of Lawesson's reagent has been determined.
