  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 607:2, s. 372-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS central detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. in this paper, the response of the central calorimeters to pions with energies in the range between 3 and 9 GeV is presented. The linearity and the resolution of the combined calorimetry (electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters) was measured and compared to the prediction of a detector simulation program using the toolkit Geant 4. • The Genome Sequence of Taurine Cattle : A Window to Ruminant Biology and Evolution
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 324:5926, s. 522-528
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To understand the biology and evolution of ruminants, the cattle genome was sequenced to about sevenfold coverage. The cattle genome contains a minimum of 22,000 genes, with a core set of 14,345 orthologs shared among seven mammalian species of which 1217 are absent or undetected in noneutherian (marsupial or monotreme) genomes. Cattle-specific evolutionary breakpoint regions in chromosomes have a higher density of segmental duplications, enrichment of repetitive elements, and species-specific variations in genes associated with lactation and immune responsiveness. Genes involved in metabolism are generally highly conserved, although five metabolic genes are deleted or extensively diverged from their human orthologs. The cattle genome sequence thus provides a resource for understanding mammalian evolution and accelerating livestock genetic improvement for milk and meat production.

  • The data acquisition system of the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 538:1-3, s. 692-702
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The n_TOF facility at CERN has been designed for the measurement of neutron capture, fission and (n, xn) cross-sections with high accuracy. This requires a flexible and-due to the high instantaneous neutron flux-almost dead time free data acquisition system. A scalable and versatile data solution has been designed based on 8-bit flash-ADCs with sampling rates up to 2 GHz and 8 Mbyte memory buffer. The software is written in C and C++ and is running on PCs equipped with RedHat Linux.

  • Study of β-delayed charged particle emission of 11Li: Evidence of new decay channels
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 111:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The break-up of the 18.2 MeV state in 11Be was studied in a 11Li β-decay experiment. We report here on the study of the dominating breakup channels involving na6He or 3n2α in the final state, with special emphasis dedicated in this contribution to the three-particle channel. The two emitted charged particles were detected in coincidence using a highly segmented experimental set-up. The observed experimental energy-vs-energy scatter plot indicates a sequential breakup where nuclei of mass 4, alpha particles, and mass 7, 7He, are involved. A Monte-Carlo simulation of the sequential channel, 11Be* → α + 7He → nα6He was performed and compared to the experimental data and to a simulation of the direct break-up of the 18.2 MeV state nα6He by phase space energy distribution. The energy-versus-energy plot are explained by the sequential simulation but not by the phase space simulation.

  • Study of $[$beta$]$-delayed 3-body and 5-body breakup channels observed in the decay of 11Li
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. ; 810, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The [beta]-delayed charged particle emission from 11Li has been studied with emphasis on the three-body n[alpha]6He and five-body 2[alpha]3n channels from the 10.59 and 18.15 MeV states in 11Be. Monte Carlo simulations using an R-matrix formalism lead to the conclusion that the AHe resonance states play a significant role in the break-up of these states. The results exclude an earlier assumption of a phase-space description of the break-up process of the 18.15 MeV state. Evidence for extra sequential decay paths is found for both states.

  • Hadron beam test of a scintillating fibre tracker system for elastic scattering and luminosity measurement in ATLAS
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A scintillating fibre tracker is proposed to measure elastic proton scattering at very small angles in the ATLAS experiment at CERN. The tracker will be located in so-called Roman Pot units at a distance of 240 m on each side of the ATLAS interaction point. An initial validation of the design choices was achieved in a beam test at DESY in a relatively low energy electron beam and using slow off-the-shelf electronics. Here we report on the results from a second beam test experiment carried out at CERN, where new detector prototypes were tested in a high energy hadron beam, using the first version of the custom designed front-end electronics. With a spatial resolution of 25 mu m an adequate tracking performance was obtained, under conditions which are similar to the situation at the LHC. In addition, the alignment method using so-called overlap detectors was studied and shown to have the expected precision.

  • Development of a detector (ALFA) to measure the absolute LHC luminosity at ATLAS
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle, Particle and Space Physics, Detectors and Medical Physics Applications - Proceedings of the 10th Conference. - 9812819088 - 9789812819086 ; , s. 984-988
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS collaboration plans to determine the absolute luminosity of the CERN LHC at Interaction Point 1 by measuring the trajectory of protons elastically scattered at very small angles (μrad). A scintillating fibre tracker system called ALFA (Absolute Luminosity For ATLAS) is proposed for this measurement. Detector modules will be placed above and below the LHC beam axis in roman pot units at a distance of 240 m on cach side of the ATLAS interaction point. They allow the detectors to approach the beam axis to millimeter distance. Overlap detectors also based on the scintillating fibre technology, will measure the precise relative position of the two detector modules, Results obtained during beam tests at DESY and at CERN validate the detectors design and demonstrate the achievable resolution. We also report about radiation hardness studies of the scintillating fibres to estimate the lifetime of the ALFA system at different operating conditions of the LHC.

  • Phase equilibria of the mixed didodecyldimethylammonium bromide-sodium taurodeoxycholate-water system with a large solution region
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-7757. ; 269:1-3, s. 87-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phase behavior over the entire concentration range for the system didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB)-sodium taurodeoxycholate (STDC)-water, at 25 degrees C, has been investigated, with emphasis on the DDAB-rich part. Polarizing microscopy, SAXS, H-2 NMR and H-1 self-diffusion NMR have been used in combination as probing techniques for phase behavior and microstructure. The system forms four major phases, all deriving from the respective binary surfactant systems. The two lamellar phases originating from the binary DDAB-water axis (D-I and D-II, at 3-30 and 83-91 wt.% DDAB, respectively) are only able to incorporate small amounts of STDC. The D-II phase solubilizes a comparatively higher amount of bile salt (up to ca. 6 wt.%), while the D, phase takes up less than 0.25 wt.%. From the STDC-water axis, a solution phase and a "hexagonal-like" liquid crystalline phase are derived, at 0-26 and 37-60 wt.% of STDC, respectively. Heterogeneous regions are also indicated on the basis of NMR and SAXS data. The most striking feature is the large extension of the isotropic solution phase, which originates from the water corner and curves toward the DDAB-rich side of the phase diagram. Even though at the upper limit of the solution phase the amount of water is reduced to 10 wt.%, the measured water and DDAB self-diffusion coefficients exclude the possibility of reverse-type structures.
