  • The European Association for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics25years young and going strong
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. - : SPRINGER HEIDELBERG. - 0031-6970 .- 1432-1041. ; 75:6, s. 743-750
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clinical pharmacology as a scientific discipline and medical specialty was unarguably born in the twentieth century. Whilst pharmacologythe science behind the treatment of diseasehad been in evolution since at least medieval times, the clinical discipline of pharmacology has had a more recent genesis and rather insidious evolution. During the 1900s, there were some clear father (parent) figures of clinical pharmacology in Europe that emerged and were responsible for the development of the specialty in this continent. This was a time when there were parallel developments in geographically dispersed academic departments (around the globe), during an age of excitement in drug discovery and clinical application of new therapeutic agents. It was the meeting of minds of some of these progenitors of the specialty that led to the development of the European Association for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (EACPT) 25years ago arising from a working party supported by the World Health Organization in Europe. The EACPT now includes all major national organizations for clinical pharmacology in Europe, representing over 4000 individual professionals interested in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics. The EACPT has a major interest in promoting the safe use of medicines across Europe and internationally and has supported these aims since 1995, through biennial international scientific congresses and summer schools with delegates and presenters from around the world as well as various working group activities. In this article, the current executive committee members of EACPT recall this history, describe the evolution of the association over the last quarter of a century, and provide an update on the activities and ambitions of the association today.

  • Fate of trace metals in anaerobic digestion
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Biogas science and technology. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319219936 - 9783319219929 ; , s. 171-195
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A challenging, and largely uncharted, area of research in the field of anaerobic digestion science and technology is in understanding the roles of trace metals in enabling biogas production. This is a major knowledge gap and a multifaceted problem involving metal chemistry; physical interactions of metal and solids; microbiology; and technology optimization. Moreover, the fate of trace metals, and the chemical speciation and transport of trace metals in environments often agricultural lands receiving discharge waters from anaerobic digestion processes simultaneously represents challenges for environmental protection and opportunities to close process loops in anaerobic digestion.

  • SooGREEN : Service-oriented optimization of green mobile networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 15th International Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks, WiOpt 2017. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9783901882906
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, mobile networks are witnessing an exponential growth of traffic volumes, linked to new services, especially for smart cities and smart-grid. The European Celtic-Plus SooGREEN project, started mid 2015, is targeting to reduce the energy consumption of the services in different mobile architectures in interaction with smart-grid. So GREEN is focused on the services energy consumption modelling and measurement, the dynamic optimization of the mobile access network and of the content delivery, the design of an Energy Efficient Virtualized and Centralized Radio Access Network (RAN), and the bi-directional interaction of the mobile network with the smart-grid. This paper presents insight into the project after its first year, and discusses research trends in green communication networks for the future.

  • Synthesis and in Vitro Evaluation of Monodisperse Amino-Functional Polyester Dendrimers with Rapid Degradability and Antibacterial Properties
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Biomacromolecules. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1525-7797 .- 1526-4602. ; 18:12, s. 4323-4330
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amine functional polymers, especially cationically charged, are interesting biomacromolecules for several reasons, including easy cell membrane entrance, their ability to escape endosomes through the proton sponge effect, spontaneous complexation and delivery of drugs and siRNA, and simple functionalization in aqueous solutions. Dendrimers, a subclass of precision polymers, are monodisperse and exhibit a large and exact number of peripheral end groups in relation to their size and have shown promise in drug delivery, biomedical imaging and as antiviral agents. In this work, hydroxyl functional dendrimers of generation 1 to 5 based on 2,2-bis(methylol)propionic acid (bis-MPA) were modified to bear 6 to 96 peripheral amino groups through esterification reactions with beta-alanine. All dendrimers were isolated in high yields and with remarkable monodispersity. This was successfully accomplished utilizing the present advantages of fluoride-promoted esterification (FPE) with imidazole-activated monomers. Straightforward postfunctionalization was conducted on a second generation amino functional dendrimer with tetraethylene glycol through NHS-amidation and carbonyl diimidazole (CDI) activation to full conversion with short reaction times. Fast biodegradation of the dendrimers through loss of peripheral beta-alanine groups was observed and generational- and dose-dependent cytotoxicity was evaluated with a set of cell lines. An increase. in neurotoxicity compared to hydroxyl-functional dendrimers was shown in neuronal cells, however, the dendrimers were slightly less neurotoxic than commercially available poly(amidoamine) dendrimers (PAMAMs). Additionally, their effect on bacteria was evaluated and the second generation dendrimer was found unique inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli at physiological conditions while being nontoxic toward human cells. Finally, these results cement a robust and sustainable synthetic route to amino-functional polyester dendrimers with interesting chemical and biological properties.
