  • Engineering for the ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) end-cap
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) is a silicon-strip tracking detector which forms part of the ATLAS inner detector. The SCT is designed to track charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN at an energy of 14 TeV. The tracker is made up of a central barrel and two identical end-caps. The barrel contains 2112 silicon modules, while each end-cap contains 988 modules. The overall tracking performance depends not only on the intrinsic measurement precision of the modules but also on the characteristics of the whole assembly, in particular, the stability and the total material budget. This paper describes the engineering design and construction of the SCT end-caps, which are required to support mechanically the silicon modules, supply services to them and provide a suitable environment within the inner detector. Critical engineering choices are highlighted and innovative solutions are presented - these will be of interest to other builders of large-scale tracking detectors. The SCT end-caps will be fully connected at the start of 2008. Further commissioning will continue, to be ready for proton-proton collision data in 2008.

  • Pion freeze-out time in Pb plus Pb collisions at 158 AGeV/c studied via pi(-)/pi(+) and K-/K+ ratios
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 48:2, s. 343-352
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of the final state Coulomb interaction on particles produced in Pb + Pb collisions at 158AGeV/c has been investigated in the WA98 experiment through the study of the pi(-)/pi(+) and K-/K+ ratios measured as a function of T-m- (m)0. While the ratio for kaons shows no significant T-m dependence, the pi(-)/pi(+) ratio is enhanced at small T-m - (m)0 values with an enhancement that increases with centrality. A silicon pad detector located near the target is used to estimate the contribution of hyperon decays to the pi(-)/pi(+) ratio. The comparison of results with predictions of the RQMD model in which the Coulomb interaction has been incorporated allows to place constraints on the time of the pion freeze-out.

  • Suppression of high-p(T) neutral pion production in central Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN)=17.3 GeV relative to p+C and p+Pb collisions
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 100:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutral pion transverse momentum spectra were measured in p+C and p+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.4 GeV at midrapidity (2.3 less than or similar to eta(lab)less than or similar to 3.0) over the range 0.7 less than or similar to p(T)less than or similar to 3.5 GeV/c. The spectra are compared to pi(0) spectra measured in Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 17.3 GeV in the same experiment. For a wide range of Pb+Pb centralities (N-part less than or similar to 300), the yield of pi(0)'s with p(T)greater than or similar to 2 GeV/c is larger than or consistent with the p+C or p+Pb yields scaled with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions (N-coll), while for central Pb+Pb collisions with N-part greater than or similar to 350, the pi(0) yield is suppressed.

  • Centrifugation on a single layer of colloid selects improved quality spermatozoa from frozen-thawed stallion semen
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Animal Reproduction Science. - : Elsevier Masson. - 0378-4320 .- 1873-2232. ; 114:1-3, s. 193-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study attempted to select the subpopulation of stallion spermatozoa that best survived a conventional freezing and thawing procedure, using centrifugation of post-thawed semen samples through a single layer of a glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane-coated silica colloid with a species-specific formulation (Androcoll-E (TM)). Sperm motility, sperm chromatin structure, membrane integrity and mitorchondrial membrane potential were studied in filtered and non-filtered spermatozoa. Single-layer centrifugation (SLC) using Androcoll-E (TM) significantly improved all the sperm parameters studied, implying SLC may be a simple approach to improve the quality of frozen-thawed (FT) spermatozoa for AI. • Single-Layer Centrifugation Through Colloid Positively Modifies the Sperm Subpopulation Structure of Frozen-Thawed Stallion Spermatozoa
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Reproduction in domestic animals. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0936-6768 .- 1439-0531. ; 44:3, s. 523-526
After freezing and thawing, four sperm subpopulations were identified, listed as FT1 to FT4. While subpopulations FT1 and FT2 were characterized by low sperm velocity, high velocities characterized the ones called FT3 and FT4. The single-layer centrifugation (SLC)-handled sperm sample was enriched in subpopulation FT3, reaching a proportion of 82.6% of the present spermatozoa, in contrast with the non-filtered control post-thawed semen, where this sperm subpopulation only accounted for 16.3% of the total. It is concluded that in the equine industry, the SLC is a practical, easy-to-perform approach to improve the quality of equine frozen-thawed semen samples.

  • Measurement and modelling of residual stresses in straightened commercial eutectoid steel rods
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Acta Materialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1359-6454 .- 1873-2453. ; 53:16, s. 4415-4425
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron strain scanning measurements on a eutectoid steel rod that has been subjected to standard industrial coiling and straightening operations are presented. Strains were determined non-destructively using two different diffractometers, one at a steady-state neutron source and the other at a pulsed spallation neutron source, with measurements made in both the ferrite and cementite components of the pearlitic microstructure. The residual stress state is explained in terms of a simplified analytical model for a two-phase material, which takes into account the successive loading operations contributing to residual stress. The results show that residual stresses generated by bending–straightening operations are significant and are likely to play an important role in the mechanical properties of the final wires.

  • Multiple Eyes in the Skies
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE robotics & automation magazine. - 1070-9932 .- 1558-223X. ; 12:2, s. 46-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The management of environmental and industrial disasters, search and rescue operations, surveillance of natural scenarios, environmental monitoring, and many other field robotics applications require high mobility and the need to reach locations that are difficult to access with ground vehicles. In many cases, the use of aerial vehicles is the best way to approach the objective to get information or to deploy instrumentation. Unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) have significantly increased their flight performance and autonomous onboard processing capabilities in the last ten years. But a single aerial vehicle equipped with a large array of different sensors of various modalities is limited at any time to a single viewpoint. A team of aerial vehicles, however, can simultaneously collect information from multiple locations and exploit the information derived from multiple disparate points. Furthermore, having a team with multiple heterogeneous aerial vehicles offers additional advantages due to the possibility of beneficial complementarities of the vehicles.

  • Does the Microbial Flora in the Ejaculate Affect the Freezeability of Stallion Sperm?
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Reproduction in domestic animals. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0936-6768 .- 1439-0531. ; 44:3, s. 518-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an attempt to evaluate the possible relationship between the microbial flora in the stallion ejaculate and its ability to freeze, three ejaculates from five stallions were frozen using a standard protocol. Before freezing, an aliquot was removed for bacteriological analysis. Bacterial growth was observed in all the ejaculates studied. The isolated microorganisms were: Staphylococcus spp. and Micrococcus spp. (in all the stallions), beta-haemolytic Streptococcus (in stallions 3 and 4), Corynebacterium spp. (in stallions 1, 3-5), Rhodococcus spp. (in stallion number 2), Pseudomonas spp. (in stallion number 1) and Klebsiella spp. (in stallions 1, 3 and 5). The presence and richness of Klebsiella and beta-haemolytic Streptococcus in the ejaculate were related to two sperm variables post-thaw, namely the proportion of dead spermatozoa (ethidium+ cells; r = 0.55, p less than 0.05) and the amplitude of lateral displacement of the sperm head (ALH, mu m; r = -0.56, p less than 0.05), respectively. The degree of growth of Corynebacterium spp. in the ejaculate was positively correlated with the percentage of spermatozoa showing high caspase activity post-thaw (r = 0.62, p less than 0.05). The presence and number of colonies of beta-haemolytic Streptococcus were negatively correlated (r = -0.55, p less than 0.05) with low sperm caspase activity. It is concluded that the microbial flora of the equine ejaculate may be responsible for some of the sublethal damage experimented by the spermatozoa during cryopreservation.

  • Detection of early changes in sperm membrane integrity pre-freezing can estimate post-thaw quality of boar spermatozoa
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Animal Reproduction Science. - : Elsevier Masson. - 0378-4320 .- 1873-2232. ; 97:1-2, s. 74-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A recently developed triple staining (SNARF-1/YO-PRO-1/ethidium homodimer) was used to assess early changes in boar sperm membrane integrity (MI) with the results of cryopreservation procedures and to seek for correlations among MI-spermatozoa in pre-freeze semen and its freezeability. Ejaculates from five boars were evaluated in the fresh and frozen-thawed (FT) state, and its freezeability defined as % of membrane intactness, MI% (MI% = % of FT-spermatozoa with intact membranes x 100 divided by the % of prefreeze spermatozoa with intact membranes) estimated. Significant differences were found among boars for freezeability (MI%) and motility post-thaw (%). Interestingly, significant correlations were found between the percentage of YO-PRO-1-positive spermatozoa and freezeability (R = 0.440, p less than 0.01), indicating this new triple staining can be used to safely disclose among ejaculates prior to freezing. • Mitochondria in Mammalian Sperm Physiology and Pathology: A Review
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Reproduction in domestic animals. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0936-6768 .- 1439-0531. ; 44:2, s. 345-349
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While, for a long time, the role of mitochondria in sperm physiology and pathology has been largely ignored, recent research points out the mitochondria as a major organelle with key roles in sperm function both under physiological and biotechnological conditions. This paper briefly reviews these novel findings regarding the role of mitochondria in sperm, paying special attention to the most practical, readily applicable, aspects of the topic such as their role as a major source of the sublethal damage that sperm experiments after cryopreservation.
