- The island of Tenerife displays contrasted densities of population, from the densely occupied coastal zones (including tourist resorts, airport, energy facilities, etc.) to the sparsely populated forests and mountainous highlands, where most of the recent volcanic events are located. Considering the low frequency of historical eruptions (compared to Hawaii or Reunion Island for example), the assessment of geological hazards must also rely on the analysis and interpretation of prehistorical events, going back to at least the Late Quaternary. In this chapter, we review the hazards related to Teide’s volcanism, but also those from increased seismicity and from slope instability. We discuss the origin of low magnitude earthquakes, and particularly the 2004 episode of unrest. New estimates on cumulative volumes for resurfacing by lava flows during the last few thousand years are provided to serve as a tool for building a lava flow hazard map of Tenerife. Hazards related to explosive activity are also considered and although possible, with phreatomagmatic eruptions being the most likely style anticipated, explosive events are of relatively low probability at Teide in the near future.

- Research into children’s audiovisual media often focuses on issues such as the psychological impact of exposure to violence and aggression on children’s behaviour and the influence of media on children’s views on gender, body image and ethnicity. As children are more malleable than adults and, as a result, more vulnerable to such media, its impact can indeed be considerable. The same applies to the influence of the language used in such media on children's linguistic development, since the target audience is still at an early stage of acquiring this (native or foreign) language. However, in many countries, children programmes are mostly imported and, hence, have to be translated. Audiovisual translation research into children’s media is, therefore, arguably even more important. Even in so-called “subtitling countries”, these - mainly dubbed - audiovisual products, but also the language used therein are, thus, worthy of closer scrutiny. With audiovisual translation studies having moved away from purely linguistic analyses, some scholars (Di Giovanni 2011, Pavesi 2018) have - rightfully so - called for a reappraisal of the study of the language of audiovisual translation (without ignoring its multimodality), particularly, in such programmes for children. Children’s programmes have been criticized for being out of touch with reality when it comes to portraying children (e.g. Götz et al. 2018). Many children, therefore, will not recognize themselves or the people around them in the characters they are presented with, but also linguistically such programmes can be out of touch with the linguistic reality in which children live. In this paper, I discuss these diversity issues in children's television and what translation strategies have recently been adopted in Sweden and Belgium to compensate for these on-going issues in children's media.

Weight loss and alterations in co-morbidities after revisional gastric bypass : A case-matched study from the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry

- Background: In Sweden, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the most common procedure when revising a previous bariatric procedure. This study is an analysis of all revisional gastric bypass operations (rGBP) compared with a matched group of primary gastric bypass (pGBP) operated between 2007 and 2012.Objective: The aim was to determine whether improvement of obesity-related co-morbidity and changes in weight after revisional gastric bypass surgery were comparable with those seen after primary surgery.Setting: 44 hospitals in SwedenMethods: Retrospective data were retrieved from the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry. The study group (rGBP) comprised 1224 patients, and the control group (pGBP) comprised 3612 patients matched for age and gender.Results: The indication for revision was weight failure in 512 patients (42%), a late complication of the initial procedure in 330 patients (27%), and a combination of weight failure and complication in 303 patients (25%). A total of 66% of patients in the rGBP group and 67% in the pGBP group completed the 2-year follow-up in the Scandinavian Obesity Surgery Registry.The rGBP-group had significantly less excess BMI loss (%EBMIL, 59.4 +/- 147.0 versus 79.5 +/- 24.7, P < .001) and a lower dyslipidemia remission rate (42.9% versus 62.0%, P = .005) at the time of the 2-year follow-up. Remission rates of sleep apnea, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and depression were similar. The effects on obesity-related co-morbidity were not related to the indication for revisional surgery or the initial bariatric procedure.Conclusion: Even if weight results might be inferior compared with primary bypass procedures, the improvement of co-morbidity is similar. Characterisation of n-InP/n-GaAs Wafer Fused Heterojunctions

- We have investigated the properties of wafer-fused Si-doped isotype hetero-junctions between GaAs and InP. Current/voltage measurements were conducted to study the influence of the doping concentrations on each side of the interface on the electrical conductivity. An almost ohmic behavior with a very low series resistance was obtained for the highest examined doping level on the GaAs side, whereas the doping concentration on the InP side was found to be of little significance. Fusion at different temperatures showed that the conductivity degrades significantly below 500°C, although mechanically stable junctions were obtained also at temperatures as low as 305°C. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurements showed no redistribution of Si, but indicated the presence of small amounts of C and Fe impurities at the interface.

- A review is presented of the one-parameter, nonsmooth bifurcations that occur in a variety of continuous-time piecewise-smooth dynamical systems. Motivated by applications, a pragmatic approach is taken to defining a discontinuity-induced bifurcation (DIB) as a nontrivial interaction of a limit set with respect to a codimension-one discontinuity boundary in phase space. Only DIBs that are local are considered, that is, bifurcations involving equilibria or a single point of boundary interaction along a limit cycle for flows. Three classes of systems are considered, involving either state jumps, jumps in the vector field, or jumps in some derivative of the vector field. A rich array of dynamics are revealed, involving the sudden creation or disappearance of attractors, jumps to chaos, bifurcation diagrams with sharp corners, and cascades of period adding. For each kind of bifurcation identified, where possible, a kind of "normal form" or discontinuity mapping (DM) is given, together with a canonical example and an application. The goal is always to explain dynamics that may be observed in simulations of systems which include friction oscillators, impact oscillators, DC-DC converters, and problems in control theory.

Long-range angular correlations on the near and away side in p-Pb collisions at root S-NN=5.02 TeV

- Angular correlations between charged trigger and associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV for transverse momentum ranges within 0.5 < P-T,P-assoc < P-T,P-trig < 4 GeV/c. The correlations are measured over two units of pseudorapidity and full azimuthal angle in different intervals of event multiplicity, and expressed as associated yield per trigger particle. Two long-range ridge-like structures, one on the near side and one on the away side, are observed when the per-trigger yield obtained in low-multiplicity events is subtracted from the one in high-multiplicity events. The excess on the near-side is qualitatively similar to that recently reported by the CMS Collaboration, while the excess on the away-side is reported for the first time. The two-ridge structure projected onto azimuthal angle is quantified with the second and third Fourier coefficients as well as by near-side and away-side yields and widths. The yields on the near side and on the away side are equal within the uncertainties for all studied event multiplicity and p(T) bins, and the widths show no significant evolution with event multiplicity or p(T). These findings suggest that the near-side ridge is accompanied by an essentially identical away-side ridge. (c) 2013 CERN. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
