Multi-leptons with high transverse momentum at HERA

- Events with at least two high transverse momentum leptons (electrons or muons) are studied using the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA with an integrated luminosity of 0.94 fb(-1). The observed numbers of events are in general agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Seven di- and tri-lepton events are observed in e(+)p collision data with a scalar sum of the lepton transverse momenta above 100 GeV while 1.94 +/- 0.17 events are expected. Such events are not observed in e(-)p collisions for which 1.19 +/- 0.12 are predicted. Total visible and differential di-electron and di-muon photoproduction cross sections are extracted in a restricted phase space dominated by photon-photon collisions.

- The compacting behavior of agglomerated aerosol nanoparticles in the size range between 7 and 150 nm was investigated using available literature data. We observed a characteristic behavior, which can be described by three separate steps. When comparing the first step, the compaction from agglomerates into spherules, differences could be observed for nanoparticles of different materials. It is seen from the available data that smaller particles compact at lower temperatures. For most materials where data available (Ag, Au, Fe, W, PbS and SnO2), the compaction temperatures were found to lie in a temperature interval, between 1/3 and 1/2 of the bulk melting temperature. For the data available on TiO2, on the other hand, the compaction temperature corresponds to about 2/3 of the bulk melting temperature. Thus, a fundamental difference might exist in the sintering behavior of titania as compared with other materials. This difference may be attributed to a lower degree of cleanliness of the titania particles.

- The composition of the labour force is an important economic factor for a country. Often the changes in proportions of different groups are of interest. In this paper we study a monthly compositional time series from the Swedish Labour Force Survey from 1994 to 2005. Three models are studied: the ILR-transformed series, the ILR-transformation of the compositional differenced series of order 1, and the ILRtransformation of the compositional differenced series of order 12. For each of the three models a VAR-model is fitted based on the data 1994-2003. We predict the time series 15 steps ahead and calculate 95 % prediction regions. The predictions of the three models are compared with actual values using MAD and MSE and the prediction regions are compared graphically in a ternary time series plot. We conclude that the first, and simplest, model possesses the best predictive power of the three models.

- We report the generation and analysis of functional data from multiple, diverse experiments performed on a targeted 1% of the human genome as part of the pilot phase of the ENCODE Project. These data have been further integrated and augmented by a number of evolutionary and computational analyses. Together, our results advance the collective knowledge about human genome function in several major areas. First, our studies provide convincing evidence that the genome is pervasively transcribed, such that the majority of its bases can be found in primary transcripts, including non-protein-coding transcripts, and those that extensively overlap one another. Second, systematic examination of transcriptional regulation has yielded new understanding about transcription start sites, including their relationship to specific regulatory sequences and features of chromatin accessibility and histone modification. Third, a more sophisticated view of chromatin structure has emerged, including its inter-relationship with DNA replication and transcriptional regulation. Finally, integration of these new sources of information, in particular with respect to mammalian evolution based on inter- and intra-species sequence comparisons, has yielded new mechanistic and evolutionary insights concerning the functional landscape of the human genome. Together, these studies are defining a path for pursuit of a more comprehensive characterization of human genome function.

- Iron chemistry measurements were conducted during summer 2007 at two distinct locations in the Baltic Sea (Gotland Deep and Landsort Deep) to evaluate the role of iron for cyanobacterial bloom development in these estuarine waters. Depth profiles of Fe(II) were measured by chemiluminescent flow injection analysis (CL-FIA). Up to 0.9 nmol Fe(II) L−1 were detected in light penetrated surface waters, which constitutes up to 20% to the dissolved Fe pool. This bioavailable iron source is a major contributor to the Fe requirements of Baltic Sea phytoplankton and apparently plays a major role for cyanobacterial bloom development during our study. Measured Fe(II) half life times in oxygenated water exceed predicted values and indicate organic Fe(II) complexation. Potential sources for Fe(II) ligands, including rainwater, are discussed. Fe(II) concentrations of up to 1.44 nmol L−1 were detected at water depths below the euphotic zone, but above the oxic anoxic interface. Mixed layer depths after strong wind events are not deep enough in summer time to penetrate the oxic-anoxic boundary layer. However, Fe(II) from anoxic bottom water may enter the sub-oxic zone via diapycnal mixing and diffusion.

- En uppföljning av två delmål för miljökvalitetsmålet Ingen övergödning mellan år 1995 och 2005 har genomförts av SMED på uppdrag av Naturvårdsverket. Det gäller specifikt delmålen om tillförseln av kväve och fosfor till havet respektive till vatten. Underlag och indata till beräkningarna har tagits fram inom det parallella PLC5- projektet som genomförs för rapportering till HELCOM och från TRK-projektet (Brandt och Ejhed 2002). Metodik för beräkningarna har utvecklats mycket sedan TRK-projektet och beskrivs utförligt i rapporten. En av de största förändringarna i metodik har genomförts för fosfor belastningsberäkningar från jordbruksmark där nya mer fysikaliska modeller använts. Ytterligare en stor förändring har varit användning av Tekniskt Beräkningssystem Vatten (TBV) som ska medföra en mer kvalitetssäkrad hantering av beräkningarnaResultaten i denna rapport presenteras och bedöms med avseende på kvalitet och jämförs med transporterade mängder i flodmynningarna, TRK-resultat och resultat i HBV-NP.Resultaten visar att den antropogena belastningen av kväve minskat med cirka 25 % från år 1995 till år 2005 för de svenska vattenburna utsläppen till haven söder om Ålands hav. Delmålet för kväve anger en minskning med 30 % till år 2010.Resultaten visar vidare att den antropogena bruttobelastningen av fosfor minskat med cirka 14 % från år 1995 till år 2005 för de svenska vattenburna utsläppen till sjöar, vattendrag och kustvatten. Delmålet för fosfor anger en minskning med minst 20 procent till år 2010

- In the light of theoretical as well as concrete technical development, we discuss a conceptual shift from an information-centric to an action-centric perspective on tangible interactive technology. We explicitly emphasise the qualities of shareable use, and the importance of designing tangibles that allow for meaningful manipulation and control of the digital material. This involves a broadened focus from studying properties of the interface, to instead aim for qualities of the activity of using a system, a general tendency towards designing for social and sharable use settings and an increased openness towards multiple and subjective interpretations. An effect of this is that tangibles are not designed as representations of data, but as resources for action. We discuss four ways that tangible artefacts work as resources for action: (1) for physical manipulation; (2) for referential, social and contextually oriented action; (3) for perception and sensory experience; (4) for digitally mediated action.
