  • Collective spaces and material expressions: ritual practice and island identities in Neolithic Gotland
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Decoding neolithic atlantic & mediterranean island ritual. - Oxford & Philadelphia : Oxbow Books. - 9781785700507 - 9781785700521 ; , s. 1-15
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter we explore the mid-Neolithic ritual evidence associated with the Pitted Ware Culture groupson the Island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. We discuss collective spaces and actions and question whether thegraves are the result of a sedentary-settlement concept. A nuanced approach is advocated, which brings tolight the complexity of the individual inhumations found at cemeteries as part of ritual actions tied to specificplace and collective space alike. These burials are apparently part of a collective ritualised expression, but alsoindividualised in terms of the personal expressions found in the grave goods, body position and treatment ofskeletal remains. We will use several case studies which will explore group identity and dynamics in an islandcontext as well as how certain expressions are seen in the individual grave-rituals.

  • Gothemshammar : a late Bronze Age coastal rampart on Gotland
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fornvännen. - Stockholm : Kungl. Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien. - 0015-7813 .- 1404-9430. ; 113:2, s. 65-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports the results of a project aiming to use survey and excavation of the Gothemshammar rampart in a digital reconstruction to understand the site inits original landscape setting. Excavations uncovered internal construction details and dateable materials from domestic animals and charcoal. Fifteen AMS dates indicate that the rampart was built and used in the Late Bronze Age, c. 950–700 cal AD.Its northern end is situated at a steep scarp towards the current sea shore, andthe southern end is in an open slightly sloping terrain, currently about a kilometre from the sea. LiDAR data and an up-to-date shoreline displacement model indicatethat the seashore was about 10 m higher when the rampart was built and used thanit is today. The landscape reconstruction shows that the rampart originally cut offa headland on an islet that was strategically located at the mouth of an inland watersystem. To further understand the site’s Bronze Age context we made a spatial analysis of features tied to the same time frame, including other monumental structures(stone ships, burial cairns, other ramparts/enclosures) and metalwork hoards. It became evident that all kinds of monuments were mainly located close to the seashore on capes and islets. We could also see that the monuments, especially the stone ships, were mostly on the north shore of the ancient waterway and that its entry/exit where Gothemshammar is situated served as an important control point for travel into Gotland as well as overseas.

  • Issues in the Management of Archaeological Heritage in Sāmoa
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Samoan Studies. - Apia Samoa : The Centre for Samoan Studies. - 1813-2324. ; 5, s. 1-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sāmoa was the first nation in the Pacific to gain independence yet it does not have in place legislation to protect its archaeological and historic heritage. This paper examines issues of custom, history, law and land tenure in Sāmoa that may have impeded the formulation of policies. It reviews the way in which these issues have been accommodated in the policy, legislation and implementation of archaeological heritage protection in several of Sāmoa’s Pacific neighbours. It suggests that there may be some useful lessons in these examples for planning future heritage policy and legislation for Sāmoa.

  • Samoan Archaeology and Cultural Heritage : Monuments and People, Memory and History
  • 2016. - 1
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The overall purpose of this book is to provide a foundation for Samoan students to become the custodians of the historical narrative based on Archaeological research.  Issues that are explored are; Do ancient remains matter in contemporary Samoa?  What is the chronological status, and spatial relationship of archaeological monuments found in Samoa? Is the settlement pattern stable over the past 3000 years that Samoa has been populated and/or does central places emerge trough time? Previous efforts from the outside during the 1960 -70 of introducing Archaeology to Samoa that used archaeological methods, historical linguistics and ethno-history to interpret the Samoan past are assessed in regard to the development in Samoa but also in a wider West-Polynesian context. The book also contains data and discussions on our three-year program for archaeology at the large and important Pulemelei mound in Savai’i during 2002-2004, some of which has not been published before. Results and further implications of these investigations that were followed up by an eight-year program where the author introduced courses in Archaeology at The National University of Samoa are also presented and discussed. These efforts served as a foundation to create a Bachelors program for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Management. Results from our archaeological field schools, collaborations with the Museum of Samoa and interview projects on Cultural Heritage Management, education and legislation are also discussed here. They provide a foundation to understand the role of and the Historical Cultural Heritage in the past and present Samoa and how to move on to manage and protect this heritage in the future.

  • Stones in the South : Decoding Bronze Age Ritual Practices on Gotland
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Current Swedish Archaeology. - 1102-7355. ; 25, s. 227-256
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we discuss the ritual practices and ritualization in the Bronze Age society on Gotland based on archaeological investigations of cairn milieus and stone ship contexts. We explore whether erected stones and demarcations on the south to south-west side of the Bronze Age cairns are the norm and whether this phenomenon occurred during the Bronze Age. We also discuss whether our archaeological research can support long-term use of cairn milieus for ritual purposes.

  • Analysis of late mid-Neolithic pottery illuminates the presenceof a Corded Ware Culture on the Baltic Island of Gotland
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Documenta Praehistoria. - Ljubljana : Ljubljana University Press. - 1854-2492 .- 1408-967X. ; 42, s. 297-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we discuss variations seen in the ornamentation and modes of manufacturingpottery from the end of the mid-Neolithic 4600–4300 BP on the Island of Gotland in theBaltic Sea. The Pitted Ware cultural groups have been discussed as a western influence from the Swedishmainland, but the aDNA on skeletal remains point to eastern influences. We analyse and discusspottery from the well-investigated Ajvide Pitted Ware site and what these variations mean interm of intra- and inter-island relationships, ethnicity and change, and we suggest the developmentof what could be described as a hybrid culture.
