  • Utvärdering av Volvo Lastvagnars monteringsfabrik för hyttillverkning i Umeå
  • 2005
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Consumer report (“avnämarrapport” in Swedish) for the company in question which is financed by the company (through the Swedish Metall Workers Union, Metall) and partly also by a research foundation. It is a matter of combined data collection (collections of company data, interviews, questionnaire surveys, video-registration, etc.). In this case, was e.g. two so-called total surveys of all blue-collar employees dealing with assembly work. The problem area (or research question) was focused on a conversion back to assembly line work. Before was an early sort of, less sociotechnically advanced, parallel workgroups practiced) not the far more sociotechnically advanced alternatives to assembly line work that was at hand at the defunct Volvo Automobile AB:s plant located in Uddevalla or the so-called assembly docks located in the Volvo Truck AB:s plant in Tuve (i.e. the sole two real-life assembly system of this very calibre). This was actually wage owner consultant initiative performed with Logistic and Transportation as the sole base (no private consulting). It was a matter of combined data collection (collections of company data, interviews, questionnaire surveys, video-registration, etc. among other this thereby prospection many of our scientific methods developed during several decades. For example, involving two so-called total surveys of all blue-collar employees dealing with assembly work. The authors and their other colleagues were thus, in many respects, using a wide repertoire of scientific methods.

  • Materialfasader och förpackningar vid manuell montering i japansk och svensk fordonsindustri
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Kvalitet och effektivitet i hela försörjningskedjan, Proceedings of PLANs forsknings- och tillämpningskonferens 2005, Borås, Ekwall, D., ed., Högskolan i Borås and PLAN Föreningen för produktionslogistik. ; , s. 73-94

  • Alternativ montering
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Chukyo Keiei Kenkyu (academic japanese journal). ; 18:1, s. 73 - 153
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A translation into Japanese of the three authors’’ book written for and financed by the Swedish Metal Workers Union (IF Metall is Swedish). Namely, “Alternativ montering. Principer och erfarenheter från fordonsindustrin”, Engström, Jonnsson and Medbo 2005). Which was financed by this organization (i.e. Metall), and which summarizes the authors’’ insights and experiences in more popular terms (used for this organization’s education, as well as made available on their website) (see other publications registered in Chalmers Public library CPL).

  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book was written for and financed by the Swedish metal workers union (IF Metall is Swedish). And, it summarizes the authors’’ insights and experiences regarding assembly work within the Swedish automotive industry in more popular terms (it was used for this organization’s education, as well as made available on their public website). • Sammanfattning av resultat från löntagarkonsultuppdrag att dokumentera och utvärdera Volvo Lastvagnars monteringsfabrik i Umeå
  • 2006
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The authors have in this article manuscript (preprint not yet completed due to the retirement of one of the authors) deals with a conversion back to assembly line work. Before was an early sort of, less sociotechnically advanced, parallel workgroups practised. The article (or book chapter) is actually a more popular description that never was published, while the consumer reports were actually aimed at the company in question. However, this article manuscript was financed by a research foundation (but based an initiative by the Swedish Metall Workers Union, Metall). The wage owner consultant initiative was a matter of combined data collection (collections of company data, interviews, questionnaire surveys, video-registration, etc. among other this thereby prospection many of our scientific methods developed during several decades. For example, involving two so-called total surveys of all blue-collar employees dealing with assembly work. • The impact of materials exposure on the conditions at the workstation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of EurOMA conference, Groningen, The Netherlands.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to increase the understanding of how the materials exposure impacts the workstation conditions, in terms of non-value adding work, the space needed and ergonomics. In a typical workstation in the Swedish Automotive industry materials for manual assembly are exposed along the line in pallets, being supplied by forklift trucks. In this study, three workstations were re-designed, using the principles of lean production, one was subsequently rebuilt and a pilot study was performed. Materials had previously been supplied and exposed in pallets and the re- design with smaller containers decreased the space needed along the line with 67%. The results included a decrease of the non-value adding work at the workstation of 23%. The walking path for the operator was decreased by 52%. Reducing picking of unbeneficial exposed materials, unnecessary movements and carrying work improved the ergonomics for the operator.

  • Factors and motives in outsourcing decisions
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of EurOMA conference, Ankara, Turkey.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Outsourcing is a complex and important decision: organizations with different levels of success in outsourcing include different factors into outsourcing decisions. Current literature points to several factors to consider in outsourcing decisions, though there are few studies that evaluate what factors companies view as important. The purpose of this paper is to analyze what factors Swedish companies consider important when making outsourcing decisions for manufacturing and to identify motives for outsourcing. A questionnaire and interviews were used to collect data. The companies were asked which factors were most uncertain and concerning when making outsourcing decisions and due to should be important to include in outsourcing decisions. Quality, cooperation and communication, trustworthiness and stability of the supplier, and control over products and own processes were according to the companies factors that created most uncertainty and concern. The four main motives of outsourcing are all connected to costs and reaching financial goals.
