  • Measurement of the eta -> 3 pi(0) Dalitz plot distribution with the WASA detector at COSY
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 677:1-2, s. 24-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the first production run of the WASA experiment at COSY, the eta decay into three neutral pions was measured in proton-proton interactions at a proton beam kinetic energy of 1.4 GeV. The Dalitz plot of the three pious was Studied using 1.2 x 10(5) fully reconstructed events. and the quadratic slope parameter alpha was determined to be -0.027 +/- 0.008(stat) +/- 0.005(syst). The result is consistent with previous measurements and further corroborates the importance of pion-pion final state interactions. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Signalling in malaria parasites. The MALSIG consortium
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Parasite. - : EDP Sciences. - 1252-607X .- 1776-1042. ; 16:3, s. 169-182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Depending on their developmental stage in the life cycle, malaria parasites develop within or outside host cells, and in extremely diverse contexts such as the vertebrate liver and blood circulation, or the insect midgut and hemocoel. Cellular and molecular mechanisms enabling the parasite to sense and respond to the intra- and the extra-cellular environments are therefore key elements for the proliferation and transmission of Plasmodium, and therefore are, from a public health perspective, strategic targets in the fight against this deadly disease. The MALSIG consortium, which was initiated in February 2009, was designed with the primary objective to integrate research ongoing in Europe and India on i) the properties of Plasmodium signalling molecules, and ii) developmental processes occurring at various points of the parasite life cycle. On one hand, functional studies of individual genes and their products in Plasmodium falciparum (and in the technically more manageable rodent model Plasmodium berghei) are providing information on parasite protein kinases and phosphatases, and of the molecules governing cyclic nucleotide metabolism and calcium signalling. On the other hand, cellular and molecular studies are elucidating key steps of parasite development such as merozoite invasion and egress in blood and liver parasite stages, control of DNA replication in asexual and sexual development, membrane dynamics and trafficking, production of gametocytes in the vertebrate host and further parasite development in the mosquito. This article, which synthetically reviews such signalling molecules and cellular processes, aims to provide a glimpse of the global frame in which the activities of the MALSIG consortium will develop over the next three years.

  • Increasing awareness about venous disease: The American Venous Forum expands the National Venous Screening Program
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Vascular Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 1097-6809 .- 0741-5214. ; 48:2, s. 394-399
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To evaluate the results of the expanded National Venous Screening Program (NVSP) as administered by the American Venous Forum. Methods. Eighty-three physicians across 40 states participated in screening Americans for venous disease. The NVSP instrument included demographics, venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk assessment, quality-of-life (QOL) assessment, duplex ultrasound scan for reflux and obstruction, and clinical inspection. Participants received educational materials and a report card to give their physician. Results: A total of 2234 individuals underwent screening (mean, 26 people/site; range, 4-42). Demographic data observed included mean age of 60 years (range, 17-93 years); 77% female; 80% Caucasian; mean BMI of 29 (range, 11-68); 40% current or previous smoker; and 24% taking antiplatelet therapy and 4% taking warfarin. If placed in a situation conducive for VTE, 40% of participants were low risk, 22% were moderate risk, 21% were high risk, and 17% were very high risk. On a venous QOL assessment, 17% had a combined total score for all 11 questions of "very limited" or "impossible to do." Reflux or obstruction was noted in 37% and 5% of participants, respectively. CEAP class 0 to 6 was 29%, 29%, 23%, 10%, 9%, 1.5%, 0.5%, respectively. Discussion: Despite a dramatic expansion in the second annual NSVP (from 17 to 83 centers), the presence of venous disease observed in a larger screened population continues to be high. The NVSP represents one pathway to increasing public awareness about venous disease.

  • Wide continuously tunable 1.55 μm vertical air-cavity wavelength selective elements for filters and VCSELs using micromachined actuation
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Opto-Ireland 2005. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 0819458104 ; , s. 14-28
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tailored scaling allows the effectiveness of physical effects and mechanical stability to be enhanced. This is shown for micromachined 1.55μm vertical-resonator-based filters and VCSELs, capable of wide, continuous, and kink-free tuning by a single control parameter. Tuning is achieved by mechanically actuating one or several membranes in a vertical air-gap resonator including two highly reflective DBR mirrors. Electrostatically actuatable single-chip filters including InP/air-gap DBR's (3.5 periods) reveal a continuous tuning up to 14% of the absolute wavelength. Varying a reverse voltage (U=0 .. -3.2V) between the membranes (almost flat in the unactuated condition) a tuning range up to 142nm was obtained. Varying a reverse voltage (U=0 .. -28V) between the membranes (strained and curved in the unactuated condition) a tuning range up to 221nm was obtained. Optically pumped and continuously tunable 1.55μm VCSELs show 26nm spectral tuning range, 400μW maximum output power, and 57dBm SMSR. This two-chip VCSEL has a movable top mirror membrane, which is precisely designed to obtain a specific air-gap length and a tailored radius of curvature in order to efficiently support the fundamental optical mode of the plane-concave resonator. The curved top mirror DBR membrane consists of periodically alternating differently stressed silicon nitride and silicon dioxide multilayers. The lower InP-based part consists of the InP/GaInAsP bottom DBR and the GaInAsP active region.
