    • The spatial organization of the workplace affects the work going on there. The technology used, changes the work practice. This paper describes a design process where different aspects of workplace design for project-based office work have been combined into one multi-stakeholder project, integrating the spatial aspects, the furniture, the information technology, and the IT-services that are connected to work. To have several different partners with different interests and competencies collaborating in a future oriented design process puts certain demands on the setup of the process and the tools being used. Taking a starting point in existing work practice, we have driven this project with techniques most often used for user-involvement. Scenario building played a crucial role in tying the process together. The concrete result is a completed concept proposal for an actual “office of the future” layout, which integrates advanced information technology and service solutions. The case shows that it is possible to reach innovative consensus-anchored results with the described design method.

  • Contextualizing mobile IT
  • 2004

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information and communication technologies are moving into the era of ubiquitous computing, with increased density of technology and increased mobility and continuity in use. From a design perspective, addressing the accommodation and coordination of multiple devices and services in situated use across different contexts is becoming increasingly important. In the COMIT project, ethnographic fieldwork has been combined with participatory design engaging users, designers and researchers in order to explore mobile IT use as well as the design of mobile IT concepts. Four seclected scenarios from the project are presented and discussed regarding implications for the design of mobile IT devices, with particular focus on (1) coping with multiple social contexts, and (2) the configuration and connectivity of mobile devices.

  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Studies in process control automation show that manual control skills are important in handling situations where the automatic control system fails. The fact that these skills are particularly difficult to maintain and develop in automated production environments is usually described as one of the ironies of automation. This work explores new roles for computer support in developing and maintaining work knowledge in a local community of practice. A computer based tool has been designed to support collaborative learning among operators in a chemical plant, in order to improve their skills in handling production disturbances where manual operations are needed. The tool allows operators to create interactive problem scenarios based on experienced problem situations in a model of the production environment. An information format for describing problem settings - thin interactive problem scenarios (TIPS) - has been developed that utilises the highly context specific work language developed in a local community of practice. In a series of meetings process operators have collaborated in designing interactive problem scenarios. The goal has been to establish the TIPS-tool as a component in an environment for continuous development of operator skills. Evaluation of the tool in use showed that experienced operators were successful in using their work knowledge to establish shared authentic experiences of modelled problem situations that went beyond the actual content of the scenario descriptions. Interaction among operators in constructing a shared understanding of the problem showed signs of learning in the form of collaborative sense-making, and also indicated discoveries of flaws in work practice. The results suggest that local work language can be an important resource in designing learning support for work settings - in this case allowing the use of thin interactive problem scenarios as a basis for creating learning experiences.
