  • Engineering for the ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) end-cap
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221 .- 1748-0221. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) is a silicon-strip tracking detector which forms part of the ATLAS inner detector. The SCT is designed to track charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN at an energy of 14 TeV. The tracker is made up of a central barrel and two identical end-caps. The barrel contains 2112 silicon modules, while each end-cap contains 988 modules. The overall tracking performance depends not only on the intrinsic measurement precision of the modules but also on the characteristics of the whole assembly, in particular, the stability and the total material budget. This paper describes the engineering design and construction of the SCT end-caps, which are required to support mechanically the silicon modules, supply services to them and provide a suitable environment within the inner detector. Critical engineering choices are highlighted and innovative solutions are presented - these will be of interest to other builders of large-scale tracking detectors. The SCT end-caps will be fully connected at the start of 2008. Further commissioning will continue, to be ready for proton-proton collision data in 2008.

  • The on-orbit calibration of the Fermi Large Area Telescope
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Astroparticle physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0927-6505 .- 1873-2852. ; 32:3-4, s. 193-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope began its on-orbit operations on June 23, 2008. Calibrations, defined in a generic sense, correspond to synchronization of trigger signals, optimization of delays for latching data, determination of detector thresholds, gains and responses, evaluation of the perimeter of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), measurements of live time, of absolute time, and internal and spacecraft boresight alignments. Here we describe on-orbit calibration results obtained using known astrophysical sources, galactic cosmic rays, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each detector. Instrument response functions will be described in a separate publication. This paper demonstrates the stability of calibrations and describes minor changes observed since launch. These results have been used to calibrate the LAT datasets to be publicly released in August 2009.

  • Plasma phospholipid fatty acid profiles and their association with food intakes: results from a cross-sectional study within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. - : Elsevier BV. - 1938-3207 .- 0002-9165. ; 89:1, s. 331-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Plasma phospholipid fatty acids have been correlated with food intakes in populations with homogeneous dietary patterns. However, few data are available on populations with heterogeneous dietary patterns. Objective: The objective was to investigate whether plasma phospholipid fatty acids are suitable biomarkers of dietary intakes across populations involved in a large European multicenter study. Design: A cross-sectional study design nested to the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) was conducted to determine plasma fatty acid profiles in > 3000 subjects from 16 centers, who had also completed 24-h dietary recalls and dietary questionnaires. Plasma fatty acids were assessed by capillary gas chromatography. Ecological and individual correlations were calculated between fatty acids and select food groups. Results: The most important determinant of plasma fatty acids was region, which suggests that the variations across regions are largely due to different food intakes. Strong ecological correlations were observed between fish intake and long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (r = 0.78, P < 0.01), olive oil and oleic acid (r = 0.73, P < 0.01), and margarine and elaidic acid (r = 0.76, P < 0.01). Individual correlations varied across the regions, particularly between olive oil and oleic acid and between alcohol and the saturation index, as an indicator of stearoyl CoA desaturase activity. Conclusions: These findings indicate that specific plasma phospholipid fatty acids are suitable biomarkers of some food intakes in the EPIC Study. Moreover, these findings suggest complex interactions between alcohol intake and fatty acid metabolism, which warrants further attention in epidemiologic studies relating dietary fatty acids to alcohol-related cancers and other chronic diseases. • Synthetic neoglycopolymer-recombinant human collagen hybrids as biomimetic crosslinking agents in corneal tissue engineering
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier. - 0142-9612 .- 1878-5905. ; 30:29, s. 5403-5408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Saturated neoglycopolymers, prepared via tandem ROMP-hydrogenation (ROMP = ring-opening metathesis polymerization) of carbohydrate-functionalized norbornenes, are investigated as novel collagen crosslinking agents in corneal tissue engineering. The neoglycopolymers were incorporated into recombinant human collagen type III (RHC III) as collagen crosslinking agents and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) mimics. The purely synthetic nature of these composites is designed to reduce susceptibility to immunological and allergic reactions, and to circumvent the transmission of animal infectious diseases. The collagen-neoglycopolymer biomaterials exhibit higher stability to collagenase-induced biodegradation than the control materials, composites of RHC III crosslinked using EDC/NHS (EDC = 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide; NHS = N-hydroxysuccinimide). Even at this proof of concept stage, the thermal stability, enzymatic resistance, and permeability of the neoglycopolymer hydrogels are comparable or superior to those of these fully optimized control materials, which have successfully been tested clinically. Tensile strength is adequate for transplantation, but lower than that of the optimized control materials.

  • Motion based unsharp masking [MUSM] for extracting building from urban images
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent decades, classification of remote sensing images from urban area as a means to achieve necessitated information for some applications such as automatic map updating and GIS, planning and emergency response has become one of the challenging subjects for image processing researches. In this paper, a method for classification of remote sensing image from urban area is addressed. First, motion based unsharp masking [MUSM] is applied to the input image to enhance its high frequency components. Then, laplacian of image as input feature for the Bayesian classifier is utilized. After that, size filter is used for large and small building discrimination. The Classification of small and large building using unsharp mask and Bayesian discrimination function has increased in aspect of accuracy in comparison with original Bayesian method for Classification of urban area. Experiments justify the efficiency of the proposed approach.
