  • PHENIX detector overview
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - 0167-5087. ; 499:2-3, s. 469-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PHENIX detector is designed to perform a broad study of A-A, p-A, and p-p collisions to investigate nuclear matter under extreme conditions. A wide variety of probes, sensitive to all timescales, are used to study systematic variations with species and energy as well as to measure the spin structure of the nucleon. Designing for the needs of the heavy-ion and polarized-proton programs has produced a detector with unparalleled capabilities. PHENIX measures electron and muon pairs, photons, and hadrons with excellent energy and momentum resolution. The detector consists of a large number of subsystems that are discussed in other papers in this volume. The overall design parameters of the detector are presented. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. • Three-dimensional analysis of the movement of lumbar spinal nerve roots in nonsimulated and simulated adhesive conditions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Spine. - 0362-2436. ; 28:20, s. 2373-2380
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Study Design. Biomechanical analysis of the movement of the lumbar spinal nerve roots (NRs). Objectives. The characteristics of the movement of lumbar spinal NRs corresponding to the change of posture were three-dimensionally analyzed in nonsimulated and simulated adhesion conditions using a porcine model. Summary of Background Data. There is a paucity of data on the movement of NRs. Materials and Methods. Thirty two NRs of four pig cadavers were investigated. ( study 1) Two tantalum beads were sutured on respective NRs from L3 to L6. Five beads were put into each bony structure as reference points. The porcine body was put on the cage designed for three-dimensional radiostereometric analysis. Two oblique radiographs were simultaneously taken at flexion, neutral, and extension. ( study 2) After study 1, either L4 NR was ligated onto the adjacent bone to mimic monoradicular adhesion. Radiographs were taken in the same manner. The movements of the beads on NRs relative to immobile standard points in each vertebra were analyzed. Results. The movement of NRs was characterized as a combination of stretching/slackening and pendulum motion. The distance that NRs were stretched/slackened, the excursion, and the angles that NRs moved were: 0.39 +/- 0.29 mm, 1.81 +/- 0.63 mm, and 10.46 +/- 5.93degrees ( in nonadhesion), and 0.30 +/- 0.20 mm, 1.02 +/- 0.50 mm, and 7.13 +/- 3.79degrees ( in simulated adhesion), respectively. Conclusion. Adhesion might play a part in the pathogenesis of lumbar spinal disorders because mechanical irritation secondary to stretching/slackening and pendulum motion might be concentrated at the distal part of NRs, adjacent to adhesion site, which has less cerebrospinal fluid and is close to dorsal root ganglion.

  • InP hot electron transistors with a buried metal gate
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Japanese Journal of Applied Physics. - 0021-4922. ; 42:12, s. 7221-7226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To apply the ballistic nature of hot electrons, an InP hot electron transistor with a buried metal (BM-HET) is reported. In this device, carriers are extracted from the emitter by an attractive potential originating from an embedded metal grating, and they propagate through intrinsic semiconductor material only. A simple estimation shows a high cutoff frequency and low output conductance. The estimated highest cutoff frequency is approximately 1 THz. Fabricated devices show that the collector current increased with the gate bias. After extraction of the leakage cur-rent, a clear saturation of the collector current in common-emitter characteristics was confirmed and the possibility of BM-HET as a candidate for high-speed electron devices was demonstrated.

  • Synthesis and properties of O-2- 2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethoxy acetyl cellulose
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Polymer Science Part A. - 0887-624X .- 1099-0518. ; 39:3, s. 376-382
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, a series of O-2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy] acetyl celluloses with different degree of substitution (DS) values was synthesized by a homogeneous reaction of cellulose with 2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy] acetyl chloride in a 10% (w/w) dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride solution, combined with pyridine as the acid acceptor. The total DS values of the derivatives in anhydroglucose units was determined by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra, and ranged from 0.4 to 3.0, depending on the amount of acid chloride in the reaction. The effects of the total DS values and the O-2-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]acetyl acetyl substituent distribution on the solubility of the derivatives were investigated. The lowest limit of the DS value for water-soluble 0-2-[2-(2methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]acetyl cellulose was approximately 0.5, which is lower than that of methylcellulose. The amphiphilic derivatives with higher DS values than 1.7 exhibited a good solubility in both water and organic solvents, such as dimethyl sulfoxide, tetrahydrofuran, and chloroform. Sol-gel transition in aqueous solution was observed for the amphiphilic derivatives with a higher DS value than 1.7; the precipitation temperature (T-p) decreased as the DS value increased, showing that the derivatives are highly temperature sensitive. The thermal properties of the fully substituted derivative were measured using polarized microscopy, DSC, and X-ray diffraction; and are dis cussed in terms of phase transition of the sample derivatives.
