  • Essays on Labor Market Disparities and Discrimination : Immigration, Education and Gender
  • 2011
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thesis consists of four papers, summarized as follows. Do Host Country Educations Even Out the Playing Field? Immigrant-Native Labor Market Gaps in Sweden This study follows a cohort of students from Swedish compulsory school graduation in 1988 until 2002 to document differences in education, including grades and field of education, and labor market outcomes between immigrants and natives. Results indicate initial differences in youth labor market status and long term differences in employment rates, most notably for those with Non-European backgrounds. Acculturation Identity and Higher Education: Is There a Trade-off Between Ethnic Identity and Education? This paper examines the role of identification to home and host cultures on the pursuit of higher educations for individuals with immigrant backgrounds. Identity is defined according to a two-dimensional acculturation framework based on strength of identification to both ethnic background cultures and the majority culture. The results put into question the premise of oppositional identities. Is It How You Look or Speak That Matters? -An Experimental Study Exploring the Mechanisms of Ethnic Discrimination Using a laboratory experiment, we explore the following questions: Are beliefs about performance affected by if a candidate is perceived to have looks that are non-stereotypical for the dominant population? Do these beliefs change if the candidate has a native-like vs. accented speech? We find that candidates not perceived as stereotypically Swedish are considered to be worse performers. When candidates are presented by both looks and speech, we find negative beliefs for candidates that speak Swedish with a foreign-accent. Sector Differences in the Glass Ceiling in Sweden -Is Occupational Segregation the Explanation? This paper explores sector differences in how the gender wage gap varies across the wage distribution and examines the role of occupational segregation in explaining this variation for Sweden. Results indicate that the phenomenon known as the glass ceiling is stronger in the public sector than in the private sector. This difference is found to be due to occupational segregation.

  • On the Relationship between Functional Size and Software Code Size
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Workshop on Emerging Trends in Software Metrics (WETSoM 2010), May 4, 2010, Cape Town, South Africa.. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 0270-5257. - 9781605589763 ; , s. 47-52
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SLOC (Source Lines-Of-Code) has been used extensively as a Code Size Measure, and as input to parametric software cost and effort estimation tools. SLOC is obtained by measuring FP (Function Points) on the requirements and multiplying by the SLOC/FP ratio from similar projects. This is done even though several studies show large variations in this ratio, due to weak correlation between FP and SLOC. However, in our previous experiments we have obtained strong correlation between CFP (COSMIC Function Points) and Bytes compiled code as Code Size Measure. The experiments were conducted in the automotive industry using software components developed by GM (General Motors). In this paper we explain the reasons behind the strong correlation. The main reasons are that we apply the COSMIC method on software components of similar type, with a 1-to-1 mapping to COSMIC. A strong correlation between the Functional Size Measure and the Code Size Measure is required to obtain accurate Code Size estimation results. To estimate the Code Size before the software is available, is important both for Cost/Effort estimation and design of electronic hardware.

  • Galactoglucomannan-degrading enzymes from Aspergillus niger
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Galactoglucomannan and galactomannan are among the most abundant plant polysaccharides in nature. The central enzymes involved in their degradation, i.e., endo-1,4-beta-mannanase (beta-mannanase, EC 3.2.1.78), beta-mannosidase (EC 3.2.1.25), and alpha-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.22) were purified from the filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger and characterized with respect to physical properties and substrate specificity. The beta-mannanase degraded polymeric ivory nut mannan to mainly mannobiose and mannotriose, and NMR analysis of the hydrolysis of mannopentaose showed that it acts by the retaining mechanism. Unlike some other beta-mannanases it probably lacks a cellulose-binding domain, since it was unable to adsorb on cellulose. The preferred substrates for the beta-mannosidase (MndA) were linear manno-oligosaccharides, but it also hydrolyzed terminal non-reducing mannose residues from polymeric mannan and galactomannan. It was able to cleave up to, but not beyond, a galactose side group. Two alpha-galactosidases (AglB and AglC) with different substrate specificities were purified. AglC had a strong preference for terminal non-reducing galactose residues, whereas AglB hydrolyzed galactose residues linked to terminal as well as internal residues of the substrate main chain. The cooperation of individual enzymes during degradation of polymeric mannan, galactomannan, and galactomanno-oligosaccharides were investigated. The genes encoding AglC and MndA were cloned, characterized, and overexpressed in A. niger. On the basis of sequence comparisons, AglC could be assigned to family 36 of the glycosyl hydrolases and MndA could be assigned to family 2. The expression patterns of three alpha-galactosidase genes (aglA, aglB, and aglC) and a beta-mannosidase gene (mndA) during growth of A. niger on different carbon sources were studied by Northern analysis. The aglB and mndA genes were expressed early and in high levels on galactomannan, indicating that the corresponding enzymes play a key role in the degradation of this polymer.
