  • User study of video-mediated communication in the domestic environment with intellectually disabled persons
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1044-7318 .- 1532-7590. ; 15:1, s. 87-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A user study of video-mediated communication (VMC) involving six persons with mild intellectual disability is presented. It took place at comHOME, a full-scale model of an apartment of the future, showing innovative architectural and technical designs with regard to the integration of VMC into the domestic environment. Two different zones for VMC, comZONES, in the apartment, were tested, the videoTORSO (a large-screen set-tip for informal everyday, communication) and the workPLACE (a place for professional work tasks). The: purpose of the study was to get a deeper understanding of how people use these comZONES. The final discussion points out that the comZONES seem to be interpreted correctly and to function aptly in relation to the participants, in the study. An assumed explanation is that spatial recognition is a very fundamental human function and thus less significant with regard to the mental capacity of the individual.

  • Early and intermediate stage Hodgkin's lymphoma - Report from the Swedish National Care Programme
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Haematology. - : Wiley. - 0902-4441 .- 1600-0609. ; 70, s. 172-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden a National Care Programme provides treatment principles for Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) since 1985, for early and intermediate stages often less extensive than international recommendations. The purpose is to evaluate long-term results of these principles. A total of 308 patients (167 men and 141 women), 17-59 yr old (median 31), diagnosed during 1985-92, pathological stage (PS) I-III1A and I-IIB and clinical stage (CS) I-IIA, mean follow-up 8.8 yr, were studied. Staging laparotomy was recommended in CS IIA. Recommended treatment was mantle or mini-mantle radiotherapy (RT) alone in CS IA, and PS I-IIA and subtotal nodal irradiation in PS III1A if the disease was not bulky. Patients in PS I-IIA and III1A with bulky disease, and PS I-IIB received one cycle of mechlorethamine, vincristine, prednisone, procarbazine/doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, lacarbazine (MOPP/ABVD) before irradiation. The remaining patients received three to four cycles of MOPP/ABVD with RT to bulky disease. Relapse-free (RFS), Hodgkin specific (HLS), and overall survival (OS) at 10 yr were 74%, 92% and 85%. In the individual stages, RFS ranged from 53% (PSIII1A) to 90% (PS IA). RFS (P = 0.006), HLS, and OS were significantly better in patients treated with chemotherapy compared with those treated with RT alone, especially in patients with bulky disease (P = 0.0005). The international prognostic score did not provide any prognostic information. The OS rates are in agreement with results from international centres during that time. The recommended treatment was sufficient to produce the desired results of <20-30% recurrences, except in PS III1A. Most relapses could be salvaged. Patients with risk factors treated with one MOPP/ABVD and RT had an excellent outcome, superior to those without risk factors treated with RT alone. These results favour the trend to treat early and intermediate stages with a short course of chemotherapy followed by limited RT.

  • Disturbed morphogenesis of cardiac outflow tract and increased rate of aortic arch anomalies in the offspring of diabetic rats
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Birth Defects Research. Part A. Clinical and Molecular Teratology. - 1542-0752. ; 70:12, s. 927-938
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Maternal diabetes (MD) is a risk factor for offspring to develop cardiovascular anomalies; this is of growing clinical concern since the number of women in childbearing age with compromised glucose homeostasis is increasing. Hyperglycemia abrogates cardiovascular development in vitro; however, a link to cardiovascular defects in diabetic offspring remains to be investigated. METHODS: We have studied cardiovascular development in offspring of MD rats by examining serial histological sections of GD 12.0-18.0 offspring. Development of pharyngeal arch artery malformations was analyzed and related to intracardiac anomalies. RESULTS: Pharyngeal arch artery and intracardiac defects were present in 27 of 37 MD GD 13.0-18.0 offspring. Early sixth arch arteries showed abrogated arteriogenesis, whereas fourth arch artery defects developed as a result of abnormal remodeling. Morphometrical analysis showed increased apoptosis in regressing artery segments and reduced apoptosis in persisting artery segments. Double outlet right ventricle with infundibular stenosis (tetralogy of Fallot) was predominantly found in combination with sixth artery defects and pulmonary atresia. As confirmed by morphometric analysis and three-dimensional (3D)-reconstructions, outflow tract defects coincided with endocardial cushion hypoplasia. Cases with teratology of Fallot additionally showed a shorter outflow tract. No relation with apoptosis or disturbed neural crest cell migration was found. CONCLUSIONS: Our data uniquely demonstrate mechanistic differences involved in the development of sixth and fourth artery anomalies. Whereas increased apoptosis induces fourth artery anomalies, pulmonary outflow obstruction abrogates sixth artery differentiation independent of apoptosis. The model presented allows analysis of diabetic conditions on cardiovascular development in vivo, essential for elucidating this teratology.

  • Effects of refining on the fibre structure of kraft pulps as revealed by FE-SEM and TEM : Influence of alkaline degradation
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Holzforschung. - 0018-3830 .- 1437-434X. ; 58:3, s. 226-232
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of refining on the ultrastructure of spruce pulp fibres. Pulps with different molar masses of cellulose (estimated as intrinsic viscosity) were studied after PFIrefining. The molar masses of the polymers were decreased by increases in alkali concentration during pulping. Fibre surface structures were examined using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) was used to observe changes in the internal structure of the fibres. Pulps with lower (125 and 329 ml g-1) intrinsic viscosity showed more damaged during refining than pulps with higher (620 and 1120 ml g-1) intrinsic viscosity. Observations showed pulps with lower intrinsic viscosity to have large decreases in fibre length after refining. Fibres with low intrinsic viscosity (i.e., 125 ml g-1) had less primary wall and S1 layer remaining and the external fibrillation and damage of the S2 layer had increased. The S2 wall of fibres with high intrinsic viscosity showed characteristic delamination. Similar delamination was not visible for fibres with low intrinsic viscosity.

  • Identification of enterococcal isolates by temperature gradient gel electrophoresis and partial sequence analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rDNA variable V6 regions
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Acta Pathologica, Microbiologica et Immunologica Scandinavica (APMIS). - 0903-4641 .- 1600-0463. ; 109:3, s. 209-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on partial sequence analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rDNA variable V6 regions of 14 enterococcal type strains, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus mundtii, Enterococcus gallinarum, Enterococcus avium, Enterococcus raffinosus and Enterococcus saccharolyticus showed characteristic sequence motifs which made it possible to separate them into six individual species lines. Furthermore, two species cluster groups could be identified, including (i) Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus durans, Enterococcus hirae, Enterococcus malodoratus, and (ii) Enterococcus casseliflavus/Enterococcus flavescens, Enterococcus pseudoavium, Enterococcus dispar and Enterococcus sulfureus. There were identical DNA sequences in the V6 region within each group. Temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TTGE) of the PCR products from 16 type strains, 12 enterococcal reference strains and 8 clinical isolates revealed that a single nucleotide divergence in DNA sequences was sufficient for separation, identification and division of the studied enterococcal strains into corresponding TTGE profiles. It was concluded that partial DNA sequence analysis and TTGE profiling of PCR-amplified 16S rDNA variable V6 regions provide useful tools for the identification of clinically important Enterococcus spp.
