  • Diblock polyampholytes grafted onto spherical particles: Effect of stiffness, charge density, and grafting density
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 23:3, s. 1465-1472
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structure of spherical brushes formed by symmetric diblock polyampholytes end-grafted onto small spherical particles in aqueous solution is examined within the framework of the so-called primitive model using Monte Carlo simulations. The properties of the two blocks are identical except for the sign of their charges. Three different chain flexibilities corresponding to flexible, semiflexible, and stiff blocks are considered at various polyampholyte linear charge densities and grafting densities. The link between the two blocks is flexible at all conditions, and the grafted segments are laterally mobile. Radial and lateral spatial distribution functions of different types and single-chain properties are analyzed. The brush structure strongly depends on the chain flexibility. With flexible chains, a disordered polyelectrolyte complex is formed at the surface of the particle, the complex becoming more compact at increasing linear charge density. With stiff blocks, the inner blocks are radially oriented. At low linear charged density, the outer blocks are orientationally disordered, whereas at increasing electrostatic interaction the two blocks of a polyampholyte are parallel and close to each other, leading to an ordered structure referred to as a polyampholyte star. As the grafting density is increased, the brush thickness responds differently for flexible and nonflexible chains, depending on a different balance between electrostatic interactions and excluded volume effects.

  • Resolving the flavor structure in the MFV-SMEFT
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We constrain the flavor structure of Wilson coefficients in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) from data. In the SMEFT, new physics effects in couplings of up-type and down-type quarks are related through the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix. We exploit this relation to pin down potential new sources of flavor symmetry breaking in a global analysis of high- and low-energy data from the LHC, LEP, and b factory experiments. We demonstrate the power of such an analysis by performing a combined fit of effective four-quark and two-quark couplings contributing to a large set of flavor, top-quark, electroweak, and dijet observables. All four sectors are needed to fully resolve the flavor structure of left-chiral four-quark couplings without leaving blind directions in the parameter space. Although we work in the framework of minimal flavor violation, our strategy applies as well to other flavor patterns, like U(2) flavor symmetry or leptoquark scenarios.

  • Provision of Personalized Data via Mobile Web Services in eHealth Scenarios
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technology. - : SciTePress. ; , s. 441-446
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In societies where the demographic change leads to a more and more unbalanced state between the elderly and all other different age groups, there, health management becomes one of the most significant problems, e.g., in order to allow what is often called successful aging. Ubiquitous use of smart mobile devices enables gathering of personalized data enriched with contextual information. This information can ideally be used in modern eHealth scenarios, resulting in mobile health (mHealth) scenarios. This paper describes how highly personalized and sensitive information, such as vital signs enriched with contextual information of a patient, can be stored at mobile devices and provided via modern web technologies for later-on analysis and health monitoring. Therefore, this paper presents a number of different scenarios in which such mobile technology provides certain benefits, discusses benefits, drawbacks and challenges of such an approach and describes an example implementation of an mHealth scenario.

  • Elevated levels of circulating CDH5 and FABP1 in association with human drug-induced liver injury
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Liver international. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1478-3223 .- 1478-3231. ; 37:1, s. 132-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background & Aims: The occurrence of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a major issue in all phases of drug development. To identify novel biomarker candidates associated with DILI, we utilised an affinity proteomics strategy, where antibody suspension bead arrays were applied to profile plasma and serum samples from human DILI cases and controls. Methods: An initial screening was performed using 4594 randomly selected antibodies, representing 3450 human proteins. Resulting candidate proteins together with proposed DILI biomarker candidates generated a DILI array of 251 proteins for subsequent target analysis and verifications. In total, 1196 samples from 241 individuals across four independent cohorts were profiled: healthy volunteers receiving acetaminophen, patients with human immunodeficiency virus and/or tuberculosis receiving treatment, DILI cases originating from a wide spectrum of drugs, and healthy volunteers receiving heparins. Results: We observed elevated levels of cadherin 5, type 2 (CDH5) and fatty acid-binding protein 1 (FABP1) in DILI cases. In the two longitudinal cohorts, CDH5 was elevated already at baseline. FABP1 was elevated after treatment initiation and seemed to respond more rapidly than alanine aminotransferase (ALT). The elevations were verified in the DILI cases treated with various drugs. In the heparin cohort, CDH5 was stable over time whereas FABP1 was elevated. Conclusions: These results suggest that CDH5 may have value as a susceptibility marker for DILI. FABP1 was identified as a biomarker candidate with superior characteristics regarding tissue distribution and kinetics compared to ALT but likely with limited predictive value for the development of severe DILI. Further studies are needed to determine the clinical utility of the proposed markers.

  • GaAs nanopillar arrays with suppressed broadband reflectance and high optical quality for photovoltaic applications
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Optical Materials Express. - 2159-3930. ; 2:11, s. 1671-1679
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on fabrication and optical characterization of GaAs nanopillar (NP) arrays, obtained using a combination of low-cost mask generation by self-assembled silica particles (nanosphere lithography) and dry etching. Tapered structures (conical and frustum NP arrays) are fabricated by appropriate optimization of process parameters. Significant suppression of surface reflectance is observed for both geometries over a broad wavelength range. Simulations, based on finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, show good agreement with reflectivity measurements and serve as a guideline for design of NPs and understanding their interaction with light. A combination of wet chemical etching and sulfur-based passivation of GaAs NPs, results in more than one order of magnitude enhancement in PL intensity and recovery of PL line-width, which is very promising for photovoltaic applications.

  • Carrier Generation Engineering toward 18% Efficiency Organic Solar Cells by Controlling Film Microstructure
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Advanced Energy Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1614-6832 .- 1614-6840. ; 12:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The single bulk-heterojunction active layer based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) has dominated the power conversional efficiencies above 18% in state-of-the-art organic solar cells (OSCs). However, a deep understanding of the relationship between charge carrier process and film microstructure remains unclear for emerging NFA OSCs. Herein, with the superstar PM6:Y6 blend as a model, the charge generation process in active layers is successfully manipulated by designing three different film microstructures, and they are correlated with the final photovoltaic performance in OSC devices. The amount of intermediate intra-moiety excited states from the nanoscale Y6 aggregates can be effectively enhanced by controlling the phase separation domains and film crystallinity in the bicontinuous PM6:Y6 networks. This robustly improves the hole transfer, and thus promotes charge generation. As a result, the optimal films show superior device performance, that is, the high efficiencies of 16.53% and 17.98% for PM6:Y6- and D18:Y6-based single junction OSCs, respectively. The results presented here give a rational guide for optimizing the charge carrier process through controlling morphological microstructures toward high-performance NFA OSCs.

  • Global analysis of the ALP effective theory
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We perform a global fit of the effective Lagrangian for axion-like particles (ALPs) to data. By combining LHC observables from top physics, dijet and di-boson production with electroweak precision observables, we resolve the full parameter space of ALPs with flavor-universal couplings. Using the renormalization group to evolve the effective ALP couplings to low energies allows us to investigate the impact of flavor observables on the global analysis. We show that resonance searches in B -> K meson decays significantly enhance the sensitivity to ALPs with sub-GeV masses. The lifetime of the ALP plays a crucial role in resolving the multi-dimensional parameter space with searches for prompt, displaced and invisible ALP decays. Our analysis points out the differences in probing an effective theory with new light particles, compared to scenarios with only non-resonant effects of heavy particles at low energies, as in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory.
