  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • Guidelines for the management of pregnancy in women with cystic fibrosis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cystic Fibrosis. - : Elsevier BV. - 1569-1993 .- 1873-5010. ; 7 Suppl 1, s. S2-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women with cystic fibrosis (CF) now regularly survive into their reproductive years in good health and wish to have a baby. Many pregnancies have been reported in the literature and it is clear that whilst the outcome for the baby is generally good and some mothers do very well, others find either their CF complicates the pregnancy or is adversely affected by the pregnancy. For some, pregnancy may only become possible after transplantation. Optimal treatment of all aspects of CF needs to be maintained from the preconceptual period until after the baby is born. Clinicians must be prepared to modify their treatment to accommodate the changing physiology during pregnancy and to be aware of changing prescribing before conception, during pregnancy, after birth and during breast feeding. This supplement offers consensus guidelines based on review of the literature and experience of paediatricians, adult and transplant physicians, and nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians, pharmacists and psychologists experienced in CF and anaesthetist and obstetricians with experience of CF pregnancy. It is hoped they will provide practical guidelines helpful to the multidisciplinary CF teams caring for pregnant women with CF.

  • Standard Unstructured Grid Solutions for Cranked Arrow Wing Aerodynamics Project International F-16XL
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aircraft. - : American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). - 0021-8669 .- 1533-3868. ; 46:2, s. 385-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Steady and unsteady viscous flow simulations of a full-scale, semispan, and full-span model of the F-16XL-1 aircraft are performed with three different computational fluid dynamics codes using a common unstructured grid. Six different flight conditions are considered. They represent Reynolds and Mach number combinations at subsonic speeds, with and without sideslip. The steady computations of the flow at these flight conditions are made with several Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence models of different complexity. Detached-eddy simulation, delayed detached-eddy simulation, and an algebraic hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes/large-eddy simulation model are used to quantify unsteady effects at the same flight conditions. The computed results are compared with flight-test data in the form of surface pressures, skin friction, and boundary-layer velocity profiles. The focus of the comparison is on turbulence modeling effects and effects of unsteadiness. The overall agreement with flight data is good, with no clear trend as to which physical modeling approach is superior for this class of flow. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence models perform well in predicting the flow in an average sense. However, some of the flow conditions involve locally unsteady flow over the aircraft, which are held responsible for the scatter between the different turbulence modeling approaches. The detached-eddy simulations are able to quantify the unsteady effects, although they are not consistently better than the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence models in predicting the flow in an average sense in these flow regions. Detached-eddy simulation fails to predict boundary-layer profiles consistently over a range of flow regimes, with delayed detached-eddy simulation and hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes/large-eddy simulation models offering a remedy to recover some of the predictive capabilities of the underlying Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence model. Nonetheless, the confidence in the predictive capabilities of the computational fluid dynamics codes with regard to complex vortical flowfields around high-performance aircraft of this planform increased significantly during this study.

  • Increased thirst and drinking in Huntington's disease and the R6/2 mouse
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Brain Research Bulletin. - : Elsevier BV. - 0361-9230. ; 76:1-2, s. 70-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While Huntington's disease (HD) is a condition that primarily involves the basal ganglia, there is evidence to suggest that the hypothalamus is also affected. Because the osmoreceptors regulating thirst are situated in the circumventricular region of the hypothalamus, we were interested in whether altered thirst is a part of the HD phenotype. We used the LABORAS behavioural monitoring system and water consumption to show that drinking behaviour was abnormal in R6/2 mice. By 10 weeks of age, R6/2 mice spent significantly more time drinking and drank a greater volume than their wild-type (WT) littermates. The numbers of immunoreactive vasopressin neurons in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus in R6/2 mice were significantly decreased from 8 weeks of age, suggesting that the change in drinking behaviour may be the result of hypothalamic dysfunction. We gave a xerostomia (dry mouth) questionnaire to HD patients and control subjects, and also measured their urine osmolality and serum vasopressin. The mean total xerostomia score was significantly higher in HD patients than in controls, indicating greater thirst in HD patients. Urine osmolality was unaffected in HD patients up to clinical stage 111, and none of the patients had diabetes. However, serum vasopressin was increased, suggesting a dysregulation in the control of hypothalamic vasopressin release. A dry mouth can affect taste, mastication and swallowing, all of which may contribute to the significant weight loss seen in both HD patients and R6/2 mice, as can dehydration. We suggest that increased thirst may be an important and clinically relevant biomarker for the study of disease progression in HD.

  • Guidelines on the use of photodynamic therapy for nonmelanoma skin cancer: an international consensus. International Society for Photodynamic Therapy in Dermatology, 2005
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: J Am Acad Dermatol. ; 56:1, s. 125-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) is used to treat nonmelanoma skin cancers, such as actinic keratoses, Bowen's disease, and basal cell carcinoma (superficial and nodular). This article presents up-to-date, practical, evidence-based recommendations on the use of topical PDT using 5-aminolevulinic acid or methyl aminolevulinate for the treatment (and prevention) of nonmelanoma skin cancers. A systematic literature review was conducted (using MEDLINE), and recommendations were made on the basis of the quality of evidence for efficacy, safety/tolerability, cosmetic outcome, and patient satisfaction/preference. Topical PDT is highly effective in the treatment of actinic keratoses, Bowen's disease, superficial and thin nodular basal cell carcinomas, with cosmesis typically superior to that achieved with existing standard therapies. PDT may also be a means of preventing certain nonmelanoma skin cancers in immunosuppressed patients.

  • Transport and release of chemicals from plastics to the environment and to wildlife
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: PHILOSOPHICAL TRANSACTIONS OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY B-BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES. - : The Royal Society. - 0962-8436 .- 1471-2970. ; 364:1526, s. 2027-2045
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plastics debris in the marine environment, including resin pellets, fragments and microscopic plastic fragments, contain organic contaminants, including polychlorinated biphenyls ( PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, petroleum hydrocarbons, organochlorine pesticides (2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1,1-trichloroethane, hexachlorinated hexanes), polybrominated diphenylethers, alkylphenols and bisphenol A, at concentrations from sub ng g(-1) to mg g(-1). Some of these compounds are added during plastics manufacture, while others adsorb from the surrounding seawater. Concentrations of hydrophobic contaminants adsorbed on plastics showed distinct spatial variations reflecting global pollution patterns. Model calculations and experimental observations consistently show that polyethylene accumulates more organic contaminants than other plastics such as polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride. Both a mathematical model using equilibrium partitioning and experimental data have demonstrated the transfer of contaminants from plastic to organisms. A feeding experiment indicated that PCBs could transfer from contaminated plastics to streaked shearwater chicks. Plasticizers, other plastics additives and constitutional monomers also present potential threats in terrestrial environments because they can leach from waste disposal sites into groundwater and/or surface waters. Leaching and degradation of plasticizers and polymers are complex phenomena dependent on environmental conditions in the landfill and the chemical properties of each additive. Bisphenol A concentrations in leachates from municipal waste disposal sites in tropical Asia ranged from sub mu g l(-1) to mg l(-1) and were correlated with the level of economic development.
