  • Filming the evolution of symbiotic novae with VLBI: The 2021 explosion of RS Oph
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Science. - 1824-8039. ; 428
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fifteen years after its previous outburst, the symbiotic recurrent nova RS Oph exploded again on 2021 Aug 8th, its first outburst during the Fermi era. In symbiotic novae, the material ejected from the surface of the white dwarf (WD) after the thermonuclear runaway drives a strong shock through the dense circumstellar gas produced by the red giant (RG) wind. This nova is a perfect real-Time laboratory for studying physical processes as diverse as accretion, thermonuclear explosions, shock dynamics and particle acceleration; in many ways it is like a supernova remnant on fast forward. The experience of its previous outburst and that of 2010 for V407 (the symbiotic nova that has been extensively observed during the Fermi era), indicates that a large sensitivity and a broad range of baseline lengths are necessary to follow its evolution over a period of several weeks. This would provide unique constraints on major outstanding problems, including the emission mechanisms, the physical processes at work, the presence and location of shock acceleration, the geometry of the system, and the density of the RG wind. We present preliminary results from the EVN+e-MERLIN observations carried out on weeks/months time scales after the August explosion.

  • Radio interferometric imaging of RS Oph bipolar ejecta for the 2021 nova outburst
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 666
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recurrent nova and symbiotic binary RS Oph erupted again in August 2021 for its eighth known outburst. We observed RS Oph 34 days after the outburst at 5 GHz with the European VLBI Network (EVN). The radio image is elongated over the east-west direction for a total extension of about 90 mas (or about 240 AU at the Gaia DR3 distance d = 2.68-0.15+0.17 kpc), and shows a bright and compact central component coincident with the Gaia astrometric position, and two lobes east and west of it, expanding perpendicular to the orbital plane. By comparing with the evolution of emission-line profiles on optical spectra, we found the leading edge of the lobes to be expanding at ~7550 km s-1, and i = 54 as the orbital inclination of the binary. The 2021 radio structure is remarkably similar to that observed following the 2006 eruption. The obscuring role of the density enhancement on the orbital plane (DEOP) is discussed in connection to the time-dependent visibility of the receding lobe in the background to the DEOP, and the origin of the triple-peaked profiles is traced to the ring structure formed by the nova ejecta impacting the DEOP.

  • THA 15-31 : Discovery with VLT/X-shooter and Swift /UVOT of a new symbiotic star of the accreting-only variety
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 661
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the discovery and characterization of a new symbiotic star of the accreting-only variety, which we observed in the optical/near-infrared (NIR) with VLT/X-shooter and in the X-rays/ultraviolet with Swift/UVOT+XRT. The new symbiotic star, THA 15-31, was previously described as a pre-main sequence star belonging to the Lupus 3 association. Our observations, ancillary data, and Gaia EDR3 parallax indicate that THA 15-31 is a symbiotic star composed of an M6III red giant and an accreting companion, is subject to EB 0.38 reddening, and is located at a distance of 12 kpc and at 1.8 kpc above the Galactic plane in the outskirts of the Bulge. The luminosity of the accreting companion is 100, placing THA 15-31 among the symbiotic stars accreting at a high rate (2.5 10-8 yr-1 if the accretion is occurring on a white dwarf of 1M). The observed emission lines originate primarily from H I, He I, and Fe II, with no He II or other high-excitation lines observed; a sharp central absorption superimposed on the Balmer emission lines is observed, while all other lines have a simple Gaussian-like profile. The emission from the companion dominates over the M6III red giant at U and B-band wavelengths, and is consistent with an origin primarily in an optically thick accretion disk. No significant photometric variability is observed at optical or NIR wavelengths, suggesting either a face-on orbital orientation and/or that the red giant is far from Roche-lobe filling conditions. The profile of emission lines supports a low orbital inclination if they form primarily in the accretion disk. An excess emission is present in AllWISE W3 (12 μm) and W4 (22 μm) data, radiating a luminosity, consistent with thermal emission from optically thin circumstellar dust.

  • The GALAH survey and symbiotic stars - I. Discovery and follow-up of 33 candidate accreting-only systems
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 505:4, s. 6121-6154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have identified a first group of 33 new candidates for symbiotic stars (SySt) of the accreting-only variety among the 600 255 stars so far observed by the GALactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) high-resolution spectroscopic survey of the Southern hemisphere, more than doubling the number of those previously known. GALAH aims to high latitudes and this offers the possibility to sound the Galaxy for new SySt away from the usual plane and bulge hunting regions. In this paper, we focus on SySt of the M spectral type, showing an Hα emission with a peak in excess of 0.5 above the adjacent continuum level, and not affected by coherent radial pulsations. These constraints will be relaxed in future studies. The 33 new candidate SySt were subjected to an array of follow-up confirmatory observations [X-ray/ultraviolet (UV) observations with the Swift satellite, search for optical flickering, presence of a near-UV upturn in ground-based photometric and spectroscopic data, radial velocity changes suggestive of orbital motion, and variability of the emission-line profiles]. According to Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) parallaxes, the candidate new SySt are located at the tip of the giant branch, sharing the same distribution in M(Ks) of the well-established SySt. The accretion luminosities of the candidate new SySt are in the range 1-10 L⊙, corresponding to mass accretion rates of 0.1-1 × 10-9 M⊙ yr-1 for white dwarfs of 1 M⊙. The M giant of one of them presents a large lithium overabundance.

  • Forbidden hugs in pandemic times I. Luminous red nova AT 2019zhd, a new merger in M 31
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 646
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the follow-up campaign of the luminous red nova (LRN) AT 2019zhd, the third event of this class observed in M 31. The object was followed by several sky surveys for about five months before the outburst, during which it showed a slow luminosity rise. In this phase, the absolute magnitude ranged from M-r=-2.8 +/- 0.2 mag to M-r=-5.6 +/- 0.1 mag. Then, over a four to five day period, AT 2019zhd experienced a major brightening, reaching a peak of M-r=-9.61 +/- 0.08 mag and an optical luminosity of 1.4x10(39) erg s(-1). After a fast decline, the light curve settled onto a short-duration plateau in the red bands. Although less pronounced, this feature is reminiscent of the second red maximum observed in other LRNe. This phase was followed by a rapid linear decline in all bands. At maximum, the spectra show a blue continuum with prominent Balmer emission lines. The post-maximum spectra show a much redder continuum, resembling that of an intermediate-type star. In this phase, H alpha becomes very weak, H beta is no longer detectable, and a forest of narrow absorption metal lines now dominate the spectrum. The latest spectra, obtained during the post-plateau decline, show a very red continuum (T-eff approximate to 3000 K) with broad molecular bands of TiO, similar to those of M-type stars. The long-lasting, slow photometric rise observed before the peak resembles that of LRN V1309 Sco, which was interpreted as the signature of the common-envelope ejection. The subsequent outburst is likely due to the gas outflow following a stellar merging event. The inspection of archival HST images taken 22 years before the LRN discovery reveals a faint red source (M-F555W=0.21 +/- 0.14 mag, with F555W-F814W=2.96 +/- 0.12 mag) at the position of AT 2019zhd, which is the most likely quiescent precursor. The source is consistent with expectations for a binary system including a predominant M5-type star.

  • The GALAH survey : multiple stars and our Galaxy: I. A comprehensive method for deriving properties of FGK binary stars?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 638
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context. Binary stellar systems form a large fraction of the Galaxy's stars. They are useful as laboratories for studying the physical processes taking place within stars, and must be correctly taken into account when observations of stars are used to study the structure and evolution of the Galaxy. The advent of large-scale spectroscopic and photometric surveys allows us to obtain large samples of binaries that permit characterising their populations.Aims. We aim to obtain a large sample of double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) by analysis of spectra from the GALAH survey in combination with photometric and astrometric data. A combined analysis will provide stellar parameters of thousands of binary stars that can be combined to form statistical observables of a given population. We aim to produce a catalogue of well-characterised systems, which can in turn be compared to models of populations of binary stars, or to follow-up individual systems of interest.Methods. We obtained a list of candidate SB2 systems from a t-distributed stochastic neighbour embedding (t-SNE) classification and a cross-correlation analysis of GALAH spectra. To compute parameters of the primary and secondary star, we used a Bayesian approach that includes a parallax prior from Gaia DR2, spectra from GALAH, and apparent magnitudes from APASS, Gaia DR2, 2MASS, and WISE. We used a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach to sample the posterior distributions of the following model parameters for the two stars: T-eff[1,T-2], logg([1,2]), [Fe/H], V-r[1,V-2], v(mic[1,2]), v(broad[1,2]), R-[1,R-2], and E(B-V).Results. We present results for 12 760 binary stars detected as SB2s. We construct the statistical observables T-1/T-2, Delta V-r, and R-1/R-2, which demonstrate that our sample mostly consists of dwarfs, with a significant fraction of evolved stars and several dozen members of the giant branch. The majority of these binary stars is concentrated at the lower boundary of the Delta V-r distribution, and the R-1/R-2 ratio is mostly close to unity. The derived metallicity of our binary stars is statistically lower than that of single dwarf stars from the same magnitude-limited sample.Conclusions. Our sample of binary stars represents a large population of well-characterised double-lined spectroscopic binaries that are appropriate for statistical studies of the binary populations. The derived stellar properties and their distributions show trends that are expected for a population of close binary stars (a < 10 AU) detected through double lines in their spectra. Our detection technique allows us to probe binary systems with mass ratios 0.5 q <= 1.
