- Domestic Violence, Family Law and School discusses the ways in which domestic violence can impact on children's lives at pre-school and school. Disputes over parental responsibility, living arrangements or child contact can create difficulties not just for the child of disputing parents, but for all children at preschool or school, as well as for staff. This book uncovers new research on an under-explored area of children's lives and social work with vulnerable children and is shaped by a comparative lens that brings both similarities and differences between England, Wales and Sweden into focus. A theoretical framework for analyses of how welfare systems tackle domestic violence is elaborated and lessons for practice that can be drawn from the findings presented are highlighted

- In this study a child perspective is chosen to analyse how child poverty is managed by children, parents, social welfare agencies, schools and administrativ courts. Based on interviews with children, parents and professionals the book shows how children develop strategies to handle the tensions related to poverty at home as well as at school - strategies that mirror the feeelings of shame connected to poverty and that contribute to the exclusion of the poor children and to the invisibility of their needs, The study also demonstrates the difficulties authorities face in implementing children's rights according to the UNCRC in child poverty cases and how policies largerly familialize the children or even make them invisible by treating them mainly as a caracteristic and responsibility of their parents.

Financial oppression and neglect of children

- Financial abuse or economic violence are concepts used to address when one party exercises control, exploitation, deprivation or depletion on the other in terms of financial resources in intimate relationships, here tentatively summarised as financial oppression. In research on violence such issues are discussed with a focus on couples and is often described in connection with men's violence to women, but the impact on children is rarely addressed. Turning to research on children the concept of neglect is supposed to cover problems in families when it comes to shortage of material provision for children. In research, however, neglect of children is not looked upon as an issue related to an understanding of gendered power relationships or violence in the family. Critical discussions about research on neglect often mention its mother-blaming caracter. The research on neglect furthermore often neglects the material aspects of neglect. There is then a gap in the research on violence as well as in that on child abuse and neglect when it comes to understanding the situation when a parent´s exploitation and deprivation of the other parent also means exploitation and/or deprivation of the children. This paper draws on research in a project aiming at bringing these research areas together in order to further the understanding of children as direct and indirect victims of financial oppression in the family. This calls for a critical analysis of earlier research both in terms of drawing new empirical conclusions from existing data and theoretical development in order to get analytical tools for future empirical studies.
