  • Respiratory Control, Pauses, and Tonal Control in L1’s and L2’s Text Reading – A Pilot Study on Swedish and Japanese –
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Speech Prosody. 13-16 June 2018, Poznań, Poland. - Poznan, Poland : Speech Prosody Special Interest Group (SProSIG). - 2333-2042.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports the results of a pilot study, which examines the respiratory control exerted by chest and abdominal-muscles during the reading of a long text in the mother tongue (L1) and a targeted foreign language that is being learned (L2), with reference to syntax and prosody in Japanese and Swedish. Three datasets of read speech were obtained from Swedish speakers (SwL1), Swedish learners of Japanese (SwL2), and Japanese speakers (JL1). The results showed that the subjects used respiratory control differently while reading L1 texts and L2 texts, respectively. Both SwL1 and JL1 used chest and abdominal-muscles almost simultaneously, and the peaks of their muscular movements co-occurred at the onset of major syntactic units such as sentences and clauses. SwL2 used more chest muscles than abdominal-muscles, with muscular movements being more frequent, irregular, and small. There was no significant difference between JL1 and Swedish L1 and L2 in terms of the tonal control (pitch range). Some pitch peaks and pauses that appeared at the major syntactic boundaries coincided with the peaks of the muscular movements, but other pitch peaks and pauses did not. These results led to the hypothesis that the acquisition of intonation precedes that of respiratory control in L2 learning.

  • Linguistic analysis of Ryûka – a traditional short poem in the Ryukyu Islands
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Abstracts of the Fifth International Conference on Languagee, Literature, and Society, 19- 21 July 2018, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. - Colombo, Sri Lanka : International Center for Research & Developmemt. - 9789554543416
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ryûka (song/poem of Ryûkyu Islands) is a traditional short poem developed in the Ryûkyu archipelago of Japan. It is written in Ryûkyuan, which is an endangered sister-language to Japanese. Ryûka corresponds to waka (song/poem of Japan), which has developed in the mainland Japan. Main grammatical difference is discussed by citing the grammatical concord called 'kakari musubi'. The grammatical concord in waka arranged in such a way to make all the five phrases to form a unified unit while that in Ryûka doesn't. It is conjectured that the difference arose because of Ryûka's musical nature.

  • Perception and Production of L2 Mandarin Tones by Swedish Learners
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 25th European Signal Processing Conference (EUSIPCO). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9780992862671 ; , s. 578-582
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study presents the results of perception and production of L2 Mandarin tones in mono- and di-syllabic words by Swedish learners at the beginner level. Although studies of perception and production on Mandarin tones are many, those by speakers of lexical-pitch accent language such as Swedish are still very limited. The result reveals both discrepancy and agreement between perception and production. Swedish learners perform best in discriminating a level tone (T1) from contour tones (T2, T3, T4) both in perception and production. Discrepancy between perception and production was noted for T3. In perception, the identification of T3 was second best after the level tone (T1), but the production of T3 was found to be difficult.

  • Perception and production of L2 prosody by Swedish learners - Summary and application to the teaching using Japanese and Chinese data
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of FONETIK, The XXXth Swedish Phonetics Conference, Gothenburg, June 7 –8, 2018 / edited by Åsa Abelin and Yasuko Nagano- Madsen. - Gothenburg : University of Gothenburg.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present paper is about the perception and production of L2 prosody by Swedish learners with focus on L2 Chinese and Japanese by the author. It gives the summary of the author’s previous and ongoing studies on the topic as well as discussion and application to teaching. Swedish L2 prosody is characterized by the upward pitch movement, i.e. preference of F0 rise to F0 fall, preference of upstep to downstep, and lack of a sharp F0 fall in their production. Furthermore, the Swedish learners have a difficulty in distinguishing F0 rise from F0 fall in perception.
