  • Privacy protection of synthetic smart grid data simulated via generative adversarial networks
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 20th international conference on security and cryptography, SECRYPT 2023. - : SciTePress. - 9789897586668 ; , s. 279-286
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development in smart meter technology has made grid operations more efficient based on fine-grained electricity usage data generated at different levels of time granularity. Consequently, machine learning algorithms have benefited from these data to produce useful models for important grid operations. Although machine learning algorithms need historical data to improve predictive performance, these data are not readily available for public utilization due to privacy issues. The existing smart grid data simulation frameworks generate grid data with implicit privacy concerns since the data are simulated from a few real energy consumptions that are publicly available. This paper addresses two issues in smart grid. First, it assesses the level of privacy violation with the individual household appliances based on synthetic household aggregate loads consumption. Second, based on the findings, it proposes two privacy-preserving mechanisms to reduce this risk. Three inference attacks are simulated and the results obtained confirm the efficacy of the proposed privacy-preserving mechanisms.

  • Gender stereotypes and the apology in a small state : Uncovering Creole male stereotypes in the Seychelles using digital matched-guise methodology
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Small States & Territories Journal. - : Islands and Small States Institute of the University of Malta. - 2616-8006. ; 3:1, s. 99-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent research in the Seychelles speaks of a “growing crisis of masculinity”, manifested in statistics such as a ten-year life expectancy difference in favour of women, alarmingly high levels of substance abuse amongst younger men, and underachievement of boys in schools. According to the authors, males are generally disempowered by stereotypical views of males as “irresponsible”, “unreliable” and “secondary to women”. Similar gender patterns have been observed in other ex-slavery Creole cultures such as the small states in the Caribbean, and some scholars argue that these structures have historical origins dating back to slavery. In this study, we seek to explore aspects of Seychellois stereotypes of masculinity through so-called matched-guise experiments. Through digital manipulations of voice quality, we produce identity-warped male and female versions of the same monologue recording – a short apology. We then asked respondents to listen to the recordings and respond to the same in a short online questionnaire, where we ask questions relating to their impressions of the apology and the speaker. Dimensions here include honesty-dishonesty; politenessimpoliteness; weakness-strength; and reliability-unreliability. Differences in results of responses to male and female versions of the apology give strong indications that Seychellois stereotypically view males as dishonest, unreliable, lazy and careless. We discuss potential origins and consequences of such constructions, and propose awareness-raising measures for how these destructive historically produced scripts of gender can be rewritten.

  • Source parameters of four strong earthquakes in Bulgaria and Portugal at the beginning of the 20th century
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Journal of Seismology. - 1383-4649 .- 1573-157X. ; 6:1, s. 99-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using original seismograph records and bulletin data were-determined the origin time, location, seismic moment (M0) and magnitudes (MS and Mw) for the four earthquakes in the beginning of the 20th century. These are two strong earthquakes April 4, 1904 near Krupnik, Bulgaria (Mw = 6.8, MS = 7.2 respectively), the April 23 1909 earthquake near Benavente, Portugal (MS = 6.3), and the June 14, 1913 earthquake near Gorna Orjahovitza, Bulgaria (MS = 6.3). Twenty-nine traces from original records have been analysed, a large number of original station bulletins have been consulted and a consistent methodology for analysing these early 20th century instrumental information is presented. In spite of a thorough effort in re-assembling and quality control of the original data, large inaccuracies remain in the improved instrumental epicentre locations and origin times. The seismic moment estimates we obtained (2.3 1018 ≤ M0 ≤ 3.9 1019 Nm) are the first ever determined for these events. The magnitude estimates (6.3 ≤ MS ≤ 7.2 and 6.2 ≤ Mw ≤ 7.0) are robust and systematically lower than most of previous estimates for all earthquakes (Gutenberg and Richter, 1954; Christoskov and Grigorova, 1968; Karnik, 1969). For the largest Krupnik event our estimates agree with those of Abe and Noguchi (1983b) and Pacheco and Sykes (1992). The studied earthquakes all occur in moderately seismic active regions, therefore our results may have significant consequences for hazard estimates in those regions.

  • Entrepreneurship in the agricultural sector : A literature review and future research opportunities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship. - : Sage Publications. - 1042-2587 .- 1540-6520. ; 42:1, s. 129-166
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Heeding calls for contextualizing entrepreneurship research and for greater attention to the role of sector in entrepreneurship research, we conduct a systematic literature review of extant research in agricultural entrepreneurship. Recent and rapid vertical integration and rationalization within the agricultural sector provides a dynamic setting for scholars to investigate entrepreneurship theory and practice. We identify three key contextual dimensions of the agricultural sector: identity, family, and institutions, which provide promising opportunities for future research and the potential to contribute to and extend current theoretical and empirical analyses of entrepreneurship research.

  • Initial surveillance in men with marker negative clinical stage IIA non-seminomatous germ cell tumours
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BJU INTERNATIONAL. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1464-4096 .- 1464-410X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives To assess whether extended surveillance with repeated computed tomography (CT) scans for patients with clinical stage IIA (CS IIA; <2 cm abdominal node involvement) and negative markers (Mk-) non-seminomatous germ cell tumours (NSGCTs) can identify those with true CS I. To assess the rate of benign lymph nodes, teratoma, and viable cancer in retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) histopathology for patients with CS IIA Mk- NSGCT. Patients and methods Observational prospective population-based study of patients diagnosed 2008-2019 with CS IIA Mk- NSGCT in the Swedish and Norwegian Testicular Cancer Group (SWENOTECA) registry. Patients were managed with surveillance, with CT scans, and tumour markers every sixth week for a maximum of 18 weeks. Patients with radiological regression were treated as CS I, if progression with chemotherapy, and remaining CS IIA Mk- disease with RPLND. The end-point was the number and percentage of patients down-staged to CS I on surveillance and rate of RPLND histopathology presented as benign, teratoma, or viable cancer. Results Overall, 126 patients with CS IIA Mk- NSGCT were included but 41 received therapy upfront. After surveillance for a median (range) of 6 (6-18) weeks, 23/85 (27%) patients were in true CS I and four (5%) progressed. Of the remaining 58 patients with lasting CS IIA Mk- NSGCT, 16 received chemotherapy and 42 underwent RPLND. The RPLND histopathology revealed benign lymph nodes in 11 (26%), teratoma in two (6%), and viable cancer in 29 (70%) patients. Conclusions Surveillance with repeated CT scans can identify patients in true CS I, thus avoiding overtreatment. The RPLND histopathology in patients with CS IIA Mk- NSGCT had a high rate of cancer and a low rate of teratoma.

  • Psychosocial work environment and mental health among the global workforce of seafarers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - 1471-2458. ; 23:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health outcomes of international seafarers, who played a crucial role in maintaining global trade during the pandemic. The study examined how changes in psychosocial work environment and policies affected mental health outcomes among seafarers. Methods: We analyzed a survey including answers from 17,861 seafarers, serving on 44 different international commercial vessels with 154 different nationalities. Stress, anxiety, and depression were applied as outcome measures in this study. Three sets of independent variables were included; work-related consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, general psychosocial work environment onboard, and socioeconomic variables. First, we applied binary linear regression, followed by a multivariate linear regression analysis. Results: The study found that changes in safety consciousness and clear communication from employers were associated with better mental health outcomes among seafarers. Eroded policies related to crew changes had a significant negative effect on mental wellbeing due to delays caused by national quarantine guidelines and travel restrictions. The results also showed a discrepancy in mental health outcomes between those onboard and those onshore, with stress being present in both groups. Conclusions: The findings suggest that crisis management within shipping companies played an important role in mitigating adverse mental health outcomes during the pandemic. Clear communication from employers and emphasizing safety issues onboard were effective strategies for promoting better mental wellbeing among seafarers. However, delays in crew changes had a significant negative impact on mental health outcomes, highlighting the need for global cooperation and overarching agreements to protect international seafarers during times of crises.

  • Patterns of gaze in speech agent interaction
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Conversational User Interfaces. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450371872
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While gaze is an important part of human to human interaction, it has been neglected in the design of conversational agents. In this paper, we report on our experiments with adding gaze to a conventional speech agent system. Tama is a speech agent that makes use of users' gaze to initiate a query, rather than a wake word or phrase. In this paper, we analyse the patterns of detected gaze when interacting with the device. We use k-means clustering of the log data from ten users tested in a dual-participant discussion tasks. These patterns are verified and explained through close analysis of the video data of the trials. We present similarities of patterns between conditions both when querying the agent and listening to the answers. We also present the analysis of patterns detected when only in the gaze condition. Users can take advantage of their understanding of gaze in conversation to interact with a gaze-enabled agent but are also able to fluently adjust their use of gaze to interact with the technology successfully. Our results point to some patterns of interaction which can be used as a starting point to build gaze-awareness into voice-user interfaces.
