Influence of a long-chain alkane on the photoinduced nematic-isotropic transition

- We investigated the phenomenon of photoinduced nematic-isotropic (N-I) transition for different concentrations of a long-chain alkane, viz., octadecane ~OD!, and a host liquid crystalline material having a small quantity ~4.5 mol%! of a photoactive azo compound. As expected, the N-I transition temperature diminishes with increasing concentration of OD. Data of time-resolved measurements of the dielectric constant through both the UV-activated trans-cis transformation and the thermal back relaxation process are presented. With increasing concentration of OD, although the response time for the former process increases slightly by less than a factor of 2, the thermal back relaxation shows a greater increase by more than an order of magnitude. As a possible explanation for this surprising result, we discuss an argument based on the structural incompatibility of the constituents of the system investigated.

Polymer network as a template for control of photoconductivity

- We report a novel method of confining a photoconducting liquid crystalline material using a polymer templating approach. The attractive feature of this approach is that the magnitude of the photocurrent of the photoconducting material does not diminish, i.e. it is unaltered by the polymer matrix. The results are compared with another method of encapsulation that was recently reported and wherein the photoconductivity decreases upon having the photoconducting material in the polymer matrix. The difference in the behaviour between the two methods is explained using a nanophase segregation model. The method described is particularly suitable for creating patterned photoconductors.

- The soft X-ray microscope at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory was developed for visualization of biological tissue. Soft X-ray microscopy provides high-resolution visualization of hydrated, non-embedded and non-sectioned cells and is thus potentially an alternative to transmission electron microscopy. Here we show for the first time soft X-ray micrographs of structures isolated from the guinea-pig inner ear. Sensory outer hair cells and supporting pillar cells are readily visualized. In the hair cells, individual stereocilia can easily be identified within the apical hair bundle. The underlying cuticular plate is, however, too densely composed or too thick to be clearly visualized, and thus appears very dark. The cytoplasmic structures protruding from the cuticular plates as well as the fibrillar material surrounding and projecting from the cell nuclei can be seen. In the pillar cells the images reveal individual microtubule bundles. Soft X-ray images of the acellular tectorial membrane and thin two-layered Reissner's membrane display a level of resolution comparable to low-power electron microscopy.

- Ten genome-wide scans have been conducted over the past few years in the search for psoriasis susceptibility genes, but only one potential susceptibility region has been consistently replicated. A meta-analysis using the genome-search meta-analysis method was undertaken combining the results of six of these psoriasis genome-wide studies. The results of this analysis revealed linkage to the major histocompatibility complex on chromosome 6p21 that includes the PSORS1 locus. In addition, linkage was also recorded to a region on chromosome 4q28-q31 previously identified only in a Chinese Hans population. Both these regions were statistically significant even after correction for multiple testing. A possible reason for the erratic replication of findings could be the large effect of the PSORS1 locus (6p21) masking the effect of other loci involved in psoriasis. To overcome this problem, we suggest that future studies condition on the effect of the PSORS1 locus.
