    • We demonstrate digital turbulence compensation using a 12-spatial mode digital coherent receiver with a multimode preamplifier that provides a 6-dB sensitivity improvement. This combination acts similarly to ideal lossless adaptive optics. Coherent superposition of 12 spatial-modes reduced median BER from 0.1 to 1×10-5 compared to traditional single-mode detection.

    • We propose to use digital holography to characterize long multi-mode fiber links. A four segment 26.5km fiber span supporting 45 spatial modes is analyzed, showing the evolution of both mode-dependent loss and cross talk.

    • We present theoretically lossless optical arbitrary waveform generation based on time-domain multi-plane light conversion, with alternating phase modulation and dispersion. We demonstrate the concept by implementing Nyquist shaped QPSK and OOK using phase modulation only.

  • Optical frequency comb modulator for multichannel systems

    • We demonstrate a full-field modulator for encoding independent waveforms onto wavelength separated inputs without demultiplexing. The modulator uses phase-only modulation and dispersive filtering for temporal reshaping and has no theoretical losses. Simultaneous modulation of three wavelengths with independent random 1% roll-off data patterns is experimentally verified.

    • We design, assemble and characterize three different multiplane light propagation (MPLC)-based mode multiplexers, including a device with reduced size, supporting 45, 45 and 36 spatial modes, respectively. Ranging from 2700 mm3 to 146 mm3, all devices achieve <-12 dB cross talk, showing that MPLC can enable compact multiplexers.

    • We show mode-multiplexed transmission over individual mode groups up to 9 groups of a 27 km long graded-index multimode fiber. We also investigate transmission distances up to 500 km using a recirculating loop arrangement for the first 6 mode groups using QPSK and 16-QAM signals.
