    • We present here a draft genome sequence of the red jungle fowl, Gallus gallus. Because the chicken is a modern descendant of the dinosaurs and the first non-mammalian amniote to have its genome sequenced, the draft sequence of its genome--composed of approximately one billion base pairs of sequence and an estimated 20,000-23,000 genes--provides a new perspective on vertebrate genome evolution, while also improving the annotation of mammalian genomes. For example, the evolutionary distance between chicken and human provides high specificity in detecting functional elements, both non-coding and coding. Notably, many conserved non-coding sequences are far from genes and cannot be assigned to defined functional classes. In coding regions the evolutionary dynamics of protein domains and orthologous groups illustrate processes that distinguish the lineages leading to birds and mammals. The distinctive properties of avian microchromosomes, together with the inferred patterns of conserved synteny, provide additional insights into vertebrate chromosome architecture.

    • Neuromuscular blocking agents predominantly block muscle type nicotinic acetylcholine receptors as opposed to the neuronal type. However, there is growing evidence that neuromuscular blocking agents have affinity to some neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The carotid body chemoreceptor as the essential oxygen-sensing cell, relies on cholinergic signalling. Atracurium and vecuronium impair carotid body chemoreceptor activity during hypoxia. Here, we characterize atracurium and vecuronium as antagonists at nicotinic receptors of the carotid body chemoreceptor. Isolated rabbit carotid body preparations with carotid sinus nerve were used, and chemoreceptor activities were recorded. There was a concentration-dependent reduction in the chemoreceptor responses to nicotine, with an IC50 to 50 µg nicotine of 3.64 and 1.64 µM and to 500 µg nicotine of 27.00 µM and 7.29 µM for atracurium and vecuronium, respectively. It is concluded that atracurium and vecuronium depress nicotine-induced chemoreceptor responses of the carotid body in a dose-dependent fashion. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • An experimental and theoretical study of converging polygonal shock waves

    • An experimental investigation was carried out to explore the possibility of producing converging polygonal shocks in an essentially two-dimensional cavity. Previous calculations by Apazidis and Lesser (1996) suggested that such configurations could be produced by reflecting a cylindrical outgoing shock from a smoothly altered circular boundary, the alteration having n-gonal symmetry. In the experiments the outgoing shock was produced by a spark discharge which yielded shocks in the Mach number range from 1.1 to 1.7 at a radius just prior to the reflection. Polygonal shocks were observed as predicted by using a modified form of geometrical shock dynamics, derived in the above paper. In addition, the modified theory was used to calculate the results of an experiment carried out by Sturtevant and Kulkarny (1976). The results of the numerical calculations were found to be in substantial agreement with both experiments, suggesting that the modifications in geometrical shock dynamics for non-uniform flow ahead of an advancing shock are useful in the case of shock focusing. The experiment. also showed that the polygonal shapes were stable in the examined range of shock Mach numbers. a result that may be of importance for a number of practical situations in which shock focusing is present.

  • Angle Resolved Photoemission from Nd(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4) using High Energy Photons : A Fermi Surface Investigation

    • We have performed an angle resolved photoemission study on a single crystal of the optimally electron doped (n-type) cuprate superconductor Nd2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15) at a photon energy of 400 eV. The Fermi surface is mapped out and is, in agreement with earlier measurements, of hole-type with the expected Luttinger volume. However, comparing with previous low energy measurements, we observe a different Fermi surface shape and a different distribution of spectral intensity around the Fermi surface contour. The observed Fermi surface shape indicates a stronger electron correlation in the bulk as compared to the surface.

  • FUSE:Lightweight Guaranteed Distributed Failure Notification

    • FUSE is a lightweight failure notification service for building distributed systems. Distributed systems built with FUSE are guaranteed that failure notifications never fail. Whenever a failure notification is triggered, all live members of the FUSE group will hear a notification within a bounded period of time, irrespective of node or communication failures. In contrast to previous work on failure detection, the responsibility for deciding that afailure has occurred is shared between the FUSE service and the distributed application. This allows applications to implement their own definitions of failure. Our experience building a scalable distributed event delivery system on an overlay network has convinced us of the usefulness of this service. Our results demonstrate that the network costs of each FUSE group can be small; in particular, our overlay network implementation requires no additional liveness-verifying ping traffic beyond that already needed to maintain the overlay, making the steady state network load independent of the number of active FUSE groups.
