  • Optimising islet engraftment is critical for successful clinical islet transplantation
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Diabetologia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0012-186X .- 1432-0428. ; 51:2, s. 227-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clinical islet transplantation is currently being explored as a treatment for persons with type 1 diabetes and hypoglycaemia unawareness. Although 'proof-of-principle' has been established in recent clinical studies, the procedure suffers from low efficacy. At the time of transplantation, the isolated islets are allowed to embolise the liver after injection in the portal vein, a procedure that is unique in the area of transplantation. A novel view on the engraftment of intraportally transplanted islets is presented that could explain the low efficacy of the procedure.

  • Potential dermal exposure to methyl methacrylate among dental technicians; variability and determinants in a field study.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of environmental monitoring : JEM. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1464-0333. ; 11:1, s. 160-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a commonly used chemical in dental work that can cause dermatitis. Nineteen dental technicians participated in a field study in which potential dermal exposure to MMA and exposure determinants, including glove use and MMA vapour in the breathing zone, were repeatedly monitored during three consecutive days. Using patches placed on various parts of their hands we observed that the fingers and palms of the dental technicians were exposed to MMA, and their forefingers were significantly more exposed than their ring fingers; this is based on pooled data for both left and right hands (p = 0.04). The exposure variability was greater between workers than within worker (i.e. day-to-day variability), but the between worker variability was to some extent explained by a model which included the tested determinants. Neither the amount of MMA vapours in the breathing zone nor glove use was consistently correlated with the dermal exposure. Thus, the effects of glove use and the distribution of exposure to MMA on the hands in working environments needs to be further investigated.

  • A Changing Arctic Climate : Science and Policy in the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Climate change has often been framed as a global issue but slow progress in the global climate negotiations and an increasing need to plan for local adaptation have made it increasingly salient to also discuss the potential of other arenas for climate policy and knowledge production. This dissertation analyzes the interplay between science and policy at the international regional level based on a study of an assessment of the impacts of climate change in the Arctic. In this case, the regional arena brought new actors into climate knowledge production and policy with an increased emphasis on the complexity of social and cultural impacts of climate change among indigenous peoples. The dissertation also shows how the structure of regional political cooperation played a role in highlighting the Arctic as a bellwether for global change. Meanwhile, the political negations that were linked to the regional climate impact assessment were ruled by the same political dynamics and policy positions as the global climate negotiations. The process illustrates how the structure of international cooperation can influence knowledge production about climate change. The dissertation emphasizes the role of vertical interplay among political regimes and how new arenas can make an assessment salient, credible, and legitimate to different actors. It also highlights the political dimensions of focusing on particular spatial scales and governance levels in climate knowledge production and policy.
