- We present and evaluate several optimization and implementation techniques for string sorting. In particular, we study a recently published radix sorting algorithm, Forward radixsort, that has a provably good worst-case behavior. Our experimental results indicate that radix sorting is considerably faster (often more than twice as fast) than comparison-based sorting methods. This is true even for small input sequences. We also show that it is possible to implement radix sorting so as to achieve good worst-case running time without sacrificing average-case performance. Our implementations are competitive with the best previously published string sorting programs.

- We show that a unit-cost RAM with a word length of w bits can sort n integers in the range 0 .. 2^(w-1) in O(n loglog n) time, for arbitrary w >= log n, a significant improvement over the bound of O(n sqrt(log n)) achieved by the fusion trees of Fredman and Willard. Provided that w >= (log n)^(2+epsilon) for some fixed epsilon>0, the sorting can even be accomplished in linear expected time with a randomized algorithm.Both of our algorithms parallelize without loss on a unit-cost PRAM with a word length of w bits. The first one yields an algorithm that uses O(log n) time and O(n loglog n) operations on a deterministic CRCW PRAM. The second one yields an algorithm that uses O(log n) expected time and O(n) expected operations on a randomized EREW PRAM, provided that w >= (log n)^(2+epsilon) for some fixed epsilon>0.Our deterministic and randomized sequential and parallel algorithms generalize to the lexicographic sorting problem of sorting multiple-precision integers represented in several words.

- A novel mutation, a C to T transition at base pair 2124 in exon 17 of the amyloid beta-protein precursor (APP) gene, has been identified by direct sequencing of amplified DNA from two Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. A simple oligonucleotide-hybridization procedure was developed to allow population studies of this DNA variation. The mutation, which is silent at the protein level, was present in 2 out of 12 investigated AD patients, in 1 out of 60 non-AD patients and in 1 out of 30 healthy individuals. The mutation can be used as a new marker for linkage studies involving the APP gene, although more comprehensive population studies are required to determine the status of the mutation as a possible risk factor for the development of AD.

A 50-year perspective of a family with chromosome 14-linked Alzheimer’s disease

- A Swedish family with two generations suffering from presenile dementia with an unusually severe Alzheimer encephalopathy was first reported in 1946. The hypothesis that the disease was inherited through a dominant gene is strongly supported by the follow-up 50years later of three additional generations and molecular genetic findings of a novel presenilin-1 gene mutation in the family. The pedigree contains six cases with well-documented dementia in four consecutive generations. The Alzheimer encephalopathy was unusually severe in the three cases studied post-mortem, with a pronounced involvement of the central grey structures, such as the claustrum, the nuclei around the third ventricle, the central thalamic nuclei and the brain stem. There were no vascular lesions and little amyloid angiopathy. All six affected cases showed the typical temporoparietal symptom pattern and other core symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, such as logoclonia, myoclonic twitchings and major motor seizures. Other predominant features were psychomotor slowness, increased muscular tension, a stiff stooped gait and a rapid loss of weight. The symptom pattern is convincingly explained by the consistent and severe involvement of cortical and central grey structures and is probably linked to the presenilin-1 gene mutation.

The Crystal Structure of Sb0.92V0.92O4, Determined by Neutron and Dual Wavelength X-ray Powder Diffraction

- A phase of approximate composition SbVO4 has been reported in the literature as a key component in new catalysts for the ammoxidation of propane to acrylonitrile. Sb0.92V0.92O4 was prepared by heating equimolar amounts of Sb2O3 and V2O5 in air at 1073 K for 2 hr. The chemical composition was determined by thermogravimetry and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The crystal structure at 293 K was determined, from three powder diffraction data sets recorded with CuKα1, MoKα, and 1.040(1)-Å neutron radiation, using the Rietveld method. Crystal data: Sb0.92V0.92O4, Z = 1, a = 4.625(4), c = 3.040(2) Å, tetragonal space group P 42/mnm, Mr = 222.87, Dcalc = 5.69 g/cm3. All three data sets yield a cation deficient rutile structure and final profile R-values of 3.5, 6.3, and 3.5%. Bond valence sums, calculated from the experimentally determined bond lengths, indicate the oxidation states to be Sb5+ and V3+/V4+, leading to the formula Sb5+0.92V3+0.28V4+0.64□0.16O4 (the square denotes metal ion vacancies). Bond valence calculations also suggest that OSb2□ is the most favorable configuration for an oxygen associated with a metal vacancy.
