  • Inhibition of the sensitizing effect of carvone by the addition of non-allergenic compounds.
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Acta dermato-venereologica. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 0001-5555. ; 84:2, s. 99-105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have previously reported a reduction of sensitization to carvone in guinea pigs when adding non-allergenic, structurally related compounds simultaneously at induction. This study investigates the criteria needed to obtain a reduction of sensitization in contact allergy. Linalool, a non-sensitizer structurally unrelated to carvone, significantly reduced the sensitizing capacity of carvone in guinea pigs. The effect of different concentrations of inhibitors in mixtures with carvone was investigated. No significant differences in response were obtained between the concentrations explored. A possible anti-inflammatory effect from the inhibitory chemicals was investigated in vitro. No suppression of the immune system was seen. This study shows that a non-allergenic compound with a structure not resembling the hapten can reduce the sensitizing effect of the hapten. It indicates that reduction of an allergenic effect might occur in consumer products that are mixtures of different chemicals. Further studies with chemically unrelated compounds with and without allergenic effect are needed.

  • Violent advertising in fashion marketing
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fashion Marketing and Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1361-2026 .- 1758-7433. ; 8:1, s. 96-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, violent advertising is discussed. An empirical study, using picture analysis, is carried out. The intent of the advertisers' message is compared with the interpretation of a male and a female consumer group. It is concluded that the consumers' interpretations not are the ones that the advertisers had intended. The violence was interpreted in a much more negative way than expected. It is also concluded that there are differences in interpretations between men and women. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

  • Specialpedagogers verksamhet efter examen
  • 2003

  • Height changes associated with pigment aggregation in Xenopus laevis melanophores
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Bioscience Reports. - : Portland Press Ltd.. - 0144-8463 .- 1573-4935. ; 24:3, s. 203-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Melanophores are pigment cells found in the skin of lower vertebrates. The brownish-black pigment melanin is stored in organelles called melanosomes. In response to different stimuli, the cells can redistribute the melanosomes, and thereby change colour. During melanosome aggregation, a height increase has been observed in fish and frog melanophores across the cell centre. The mechanism by which the cell increases its height is unknown. Changes in cell shape can alter the electrical properties of the cell, and thereby be detected in impedance measurements. We have in earlier studies of Xenopus laevis melanophores shown that pigment aggregation can be revealed as impedance changes, and therefore we were interested in investigating the height changes associated with pigment aggregation further. Accordingly, we quantified the changes in cell height by performing vertical sectioning with confocal microscopy. In analogy with theories explaining the leading edge of migrating cells, we investigated the possibility that the elevation of plasma membrane is caused by local swelling due to influx of water through HgC12-sensitive aquaporins. We also measured the height of the microtubule structures to assess whether they are involved in the height increase. Our results show that pigment aggregation in X. laevis melanophores resulted in a significant height increase, which was substantially larger when aggregation was induced by latrunculin than with melatonin. Moreover, the elevation of the plasma membrane did not correlate with influx of water through aquaporins or formation of new microtubules, Rather, the accumulation of granules seemed to drive the change in cell height.

  • Prediction of subjective response from objective measurements applied to walking sound
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Acta Acustica united with Acustica. - 1436-7947. ; 90:1, s. 161-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses prediction of the subjective response to walking sound - also called drum sound - based on differences in objective measurements. 'Walking sound' refers to the sound heard when someone is walking in the same room as the listener. Walking sound has attracted interest in recent years, particularly due to an increased use of thin floating floor constructions, such as veneer or laminate flooring, which can produce loud and sharp walking sound. A paired comparison test was performed in laboratory where listeners were asked which of the walking sounds was most disturbing. The response was analysed using a modified Bradley and Terry model allowing ties. Various measures, such as loudness according to ISO 532B, were tested against the subjective response using linear regression. The difference in 10-percentile loudness, N-10, between two stimuli was shown to predict the subjective response better than, for example, A-weighted sound pressure level. A difference of about 8% in N-10 resulted in 50% of the subjects noticing a difference. The methodology used is applicable in situations when objective measures that have subjective counterparts are sought. Although the method is based on relative observations, an absolute ranking can be obtained by using a reference or a well-defined recording situation.

  • Breast cancer patients' experiences of lymphoedema
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : Wiley. - 1471-6712 .- 0283-9318. ; 17:1, s. 35-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to explore employed women's experiences of light or moderate arm lymphoedema following breast cancer treatment in order to gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon. Twelve women took part in a semistructured interview. A qualitative method with a phenomenological approach was applied to analyse data. in order to integrate the experiences in the everyday life of the women, a critical incident method was used. The findings indicate that there are many different practical and psychosocial problems related to arm lymphoedema. Three main themes were common to all the women. These themes were: (i) Attitudes from people in their surroundings, including reactions to the problem from other people and reactions from the women on the attitudes of other people. (ii) Discovery and understanding of oedema as a chronic disease and its treatment. (iii) Coping, including both problem-focused and emotion-focused strategies. The problems integrated in daily life were of low frequency but of considerable importance to the women. In conclusion, it is of great importance that health care professionals should be aware of and have knowledge about these problems. The women's needs for expressing their experiences of arm lymphoedema may be encouraged at the time of discovery and then regularly as long as the women seek care. Efforts may be made to strengthen the women's coping skills, eventually in a multidisciplinary approach. The interaction skills of health care professionals are probably of great importance in strengthening the resources of the women leading to a positive outcome.
