  • Tactical Radio Access Networks based on Future Civilian Communication Architectures
  • 1999
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate architectures where a tactical radio subsystem can integrate in civilian systems. The idea is that civilian communication infrastructure sould be used whereever it is available. One such possibility may be found in the proposed next generation wireless communication system UMTS, where the defition of a Radio Network Subsystem (RNS), encapsulating all the features of wireless mobile communications has been proposed. We adopt this design paradigm to see if it is possible to find a low cost military network (by maximal use of civilian network technology and communication applications). The idea is to within the framework of an RNS, encapsulate also features specific to tactical wireless communications, a Tactical Radio Access Network (TRAN). Based on UMTS we describe two system concepts and architectures for designing a TRAN. Furthermore, feasibility investigation of the concepts is conducted.

  • Auditory function in 70- and 75-year-olds of four age cohorts. A cross-sectional and time-lag study of presbyacusis.
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian audiology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0105-0397. ; 27:2, s. 81-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within the framework of the gerontological and geriatric population studies in Göteborg, Sweden, 473 elderly persons were examined using pure-tone audiometry in two recent cohorts. The aim of this study was to present cross-sectionally acquired hearing data in these contemporary groups aged 70 and 75. Another objective was to compare hearing function at the same age over the last two decades (time-lag study) in three 70-year-old cohorts and three 75-year-old cohorts. The largest time-lags were 14 years (75-year-olds) and 21 years (70-year-olds). The most recently tested cohort of 70-year-olds, studied in 1992, demonstrated median pure-tone averages (PTA: 0.5, 1 and 2 kHz) of 20.2 dB HL in the left ear of men and 18.2 dB HL in women. The left median pure-tone thresholds at 4 kHz were 56.0 dB HL in men and 34.7 dB HL in women. Hearing acuity in 70-year-olds was not demonstrated to have changed in any consistent fashion over a 21-year time-lag. For the most recently evaluated 75-year-olds, the median PTA in the left ear was 27.3 dB HL in men and 21.6 dB in women. The left median 4 kHz threshold was 67.3 in the male group and 45.5 dB HL in the female group. Hearing in 75-year-olds over a time-lag of 14 years demonstrated somewhat better pure-tone thresholds predominantly in the men's better ear in the earliest cohort when compared to the cohort tested in 1990-91. However, there were no consistent differences of pure-tone thresholds between these age cohorts, except for the intermediate cohort 2, in which the men had generally worse hearing. Thus, there was no apparent evidence of changes of the auditory function in elderly of the same age over the last two decades. Gender-specific dissimilarities in annual pure-tone threshold deterioration between the ages of 70 and 75 were found and are discussed.

  • Volumetric and dosimetric evaluation of radiation treatment plans: radiation conformity index
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics. - 0360-3016. ; 42:5, s. 1169-1176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: The use of conformal radiation therapy has grown substantially during the last years since three-dimensional (3D) treatment planning systems with beams-eye-view planning has become commercially available. We studied the degree of conformity reached in clinical routines for some common diagnoses treated at our department by calculating a radiation conformity index (RCI). METHODS AND MATERIALS: The radiation conformity index, determined as the ratio between the target volume (PTV) and the irradiated volume, has been evaluated for 57 patients treated with 3D treatment plans. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The RCI was found to vary from 0.3 to 0.6 (average 0.4), a surprisingly low figure. The higher RCI is typical for pelvic treatments (e.g., prostate) and stereotactic treatments. The lower RCI is found for extended tumors, such as mammary carcinomas where the adjacent nodes are included. The latter is also valid for most lung cancer patients studied. The RCI gives a consistent method for quantifying the degree of conformity based on isodose surfaces and volumes. Care during interpretation of RCI must always be taken, since small changes in the minimum dose can dramatically change the treated volume.

  • Studies of immune responses to cell surface proteins of Helicobacter pylori and Borrelia burgdorferi by enzyme immunoassay and immunoblotting
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Helicobacter pylori and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. can cause chronic infections by evading the immune system. These two human pathogens express a number of immunogenic cell surface proteins. The aims of this study were to gain further knowledge about these antigens and to analyse the serum antibody response in infected individuals. Both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic methods are available for the diagnosis of the infections. Diagnostic techniques based on non-invasive sampling have been evaluated in this study. H. pylori infected patients can harbour more than one strain in the stomach. The specificity and sensitivity of serological methods varies with the antigens chosen. An immunoblot assay for detection of IgG antibodies to acid glycine extracted cell surface proteins of a H. pylori type strain was evaluated. Serum antibodies from culture positive patients specifically reacted with high and low molecular weight surface proteins and cross-reactivity was found with the medium- sized proteins. An optimised assay can now be defined by removing these cross-reacting proteins. There is much evidence today that H. pylori are involved in the development of gastric cancer. Antibodies to the cytotoxin-associated CagA protein were significantly higher in gastric cancer cases than in a random adult population. The immunoblot was more sensitive than the recombinant CagA-EIA. Variations in the antigenic and genetic profile of different Lyme Borrelia species occur. Antibody reactivity to a Borrelia-antigen preparation, lacking heat shock proteins and flagellin was compared with results obtained with a whole cell extract. An increase in test specificity was revealed with the purified Borrelia-fraction. EIA and immunoblots with antigens of B.afzelii were found to detect a higher number of seropositive individuals suggesting that the reliability of serological assays could be increased when serum antibodies against antigens of Borrelia spp. predominant in the local geographical region are measured.

  • Characterization of a spotted fever group Rickettsia from Ixodes ricinus ticks in Sweden
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Microbiology. - 0095-1137 .- 1098-660X. ; 35:1, s. 243-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A spotted fever group rickettsia isolated from the common tick, Ixodes ricinus, was genetically characterized by PCR and genomic sequencing. This study was performed with nymphal and adult ticks collected in southern and central Sweden. I. ricinus is the only North European tick species of medical importance which is regularly collected from humans. No species of the genus Rickettsia has previously been found in Scandinavian ticks, nor has any case of domestic rickettsial infection in humans or animals been reported. According to the nucleotide sequencing, the present Rickettsia sp. belongs to the spotted fever group of rickettsiae. Ticks are the most common arthropod reservoirs and vectors of the rickettsiae of this group. Among 748 ticks investigated, 13 (1.7%) were positive for a Rickettsia sp. Borrelia burgdorferi was detected in 52 (7%) of the ticks, a prevalence similar to or somewhat lower than that previously been recorded in other Swedish studies. There was no evidence of ehrlichial or chlamydial DNA in these ticks. The Rickettsia sp. was further characterized by 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequencing and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). The 16S rDNA sequencing resulted in a sequence identical to that described for Rickettsia helvetica, but the pattern obtained with RFLP of the citrate synthetase gene diverged from previously known patterns. The rickettsial agent of one tick which was positive by PCR was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The morphology of this rickettsia was similar to that of the spotted fever and typhus group rickettsiae. This represents the first documented isolate of a Rickettsia sp. from Swedish ticks.

  • Summary report of the TD-3 workshop: characterization of 83 antibodies against prostate-specific antigen
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Tumor Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1423-0380 .- 1010-4283. ; 20:Suppl. 1, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Twelve research groups participated in the ISOBM TD-3 Workshop in which the reactivity and specificity of 83 antibodies against prostate-specific antigen (PSA) were investigated. Using a variety of techniques including cross-inhibition assays, Western blotting, BIAcore, immunoradiometric assays and immunohistochemistry, the antibodies were categorized into six major groups which formed the basis for mapping onto two- and three-dimensional (2-D and 3-D) models of PSA. The overall findings of the TD-3 Workshop are summarized in this report. In agreement with all participating groups, three main antigenic domains were identified: free PSA-specific epitopes located in or close to amino acids 86-91; discontinuous epitopes specific for PSA without human kallikrein (hK2) cross-reactivity located at or close to amino acids 158-163; and continuous or linear epitopes shared between PSA and hK2 located close to amino acids 3-11. In addition, several minor and partly overlapping domains were also identified. Clearly, the characterization of antibodies from this workshop and the location of their epitopes on the 3-D model of PSA illustrate the importance of selecting appropriate antibody pairs for use in immunoassays. It is hoped that these findings and the epitope nomenclature described in this TD-3 Workshop are used as a standard for future evaluation of anti-PSA antibodies.
