- In this paper an OFDM timing synchronization ASIC is presented. The proposed synchronization unit can be used in any OFDM system. The algorithm is based on the correlation introduced by the cyclic prefix, which is exploited in the time domain where the time offset is estimated. Although the algorithm is too complex to be implemented on today's most powerful standard DSP, a hardware architecture that is optimized for the algorithm is implemented with moderate complexity. The unit contains 32 kbit RAM and 3000 gates. At the sample rate of 25 Msamples/s the power consumption is 16 mW, which is small for such a complex algorithm

Microparticles for selective protein determination in capillary electrophoresis

- A system for detection of trace amounts of protein was developed. Two different monoclonal antibodies against human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) were covalently bound to latex particles. When the latex particles were mixed with a sample containing hCG, a latex-protein-latex complex (immunocomplex) was formed. The complex was separated from the single latex particles using capillary electrophoresis and detected using UV-Vis detection. Limit of detection was 8 amol hCG. The separation was also monitored in real time using laser induced fluorescence - charge coupled device (LIF-CCD) imaging detection. However, a limitation of the method is the restriction to detection of proteins for which monoclonal antibodies are available.

- A miniaturized analysis system for the study of living cells and biochemical reactions in microdroplets was developed. The technique utilizes an in-house-developed piezoelectric flow-through droplet dispenser for precise reagent supply and an ultrasonic levitator for contactless sample handling. A few-cell study was performed with living primary adipocytes. Droplets (500 nL) containing 3-15 individual cells were acoustically levitated. The addition of beta-adrenergic agonists into the levitated droplet using the droplet dispenser stimulated adipocyte lipolysis, leading to free fatty acid release and a consequent pH decrease of the surrounding buffer. The addition of insulin antagonized lipolysis and hence also the decrease in pH. The changes in pH, i.e., the cell response in the droplet, were followed using a pH-dependent fluorophore continuously monitored by fluorescence imaging detection. An image analysis computer program was employed to calculate the droplet intensities. To counteract droplet evaporation, found to affect the fluorescence intensities, a separate dispenser was used to continually add water, thus keeping the droplet volume constant.

- BACKGROUND:There is no accurate non-invasive method available for the diagnosis of acute thromboembolic occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA). The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic properties of the fibrinolytic marker D-dimer.METHODS:From September 2000 to April 2003 consecutive patients aged over 50 years admitted to hospital with acute abdominal pain were studied. Patients with possible acute SMA occlusion at presentation had blood samples taken within 24 h of the onset of the pain for analysis of D-dimer, plasma fibrinogen, activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time and antithrombin. The value of D-dimer testing to diagnose SMA occlusion was assessed by means of likelihood ratios.RESULTS:Nine of 101 patients included had acute SMA occlusion. The median D-dimer concentration was 1.6 (range 0.4-5.6) mg/l, which was higher than that in 25 patients with inflammatory disease (P = 0.007) or in 14 patients with intestinal obstruction (P = 0.005). The combination of a D-dimer level greater than 1.5 mg/l, atrial fibrillation and female sex resulted in a likelihood ratio for acute SMA occlusion of 17.5, whereas no patient with a D-dimer concentration of 0.3 mg/l or less had acute SMA occlusion.CONCLUSION:D-dimer testing may be useful for the exclusion of patients with suspected acute SMA occlusion.
