  • Multi-leptons with high transverse momentum at HERA

    • Events with at least two high transverse momentum leptons (electrons or muons) are studied using the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA with an integrated luminosity of 0.94 fb(-1). The observed numbers of events are in general agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Seven di- and tri-lepton events are observed in e(+)p collision data with a scalar sum of the lepton transverse momenta above 100 GeV while 1.94 +/- 0.17 events are expected. Such events are not observed in e(-)p collisions for which 1.19 +/- 0.12 are predicted. Total visible and differential di-electron and di-muon photoproduction cross sections are extracted in a restricted phase space dominated by photon-photon collisions.

  • Generalized Mueller matrix method for polarization mode dispersion measurement in a system with polarization-dependent loss or gain

    • A generalized Mueller matrix method (GMMM) is proposed to measure the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in an optical fiber system with polarization-dependent loss or gain (PDL/G). This algorithm is based on the polar decomposition of a 4×4 matrix which corresponds to a Lorentz transformation. Compared to the generalized Poincaré sphere method, the GMMM can measure PMD accurately with a relatively larger frequency step, and the obtained PMD data has very low noise level.

    • Selective synthetic routes to isomeric diiron dithiolate complexes containing the (EtO)(2)PN(Me)P(OEt)(2) (PNP) ligand in an unsymmetrical chelating role, for example, (mu-pdt)[Fe(CO)(3)][Fe(CO)(kappa(2)-PNP)] (3) and as a symmetrically bridging ligand in (mu-pdt)(mu-PNP)[Fe(CO)(2)](2) (4), have been developed. 3 was converted to 4 in 75% yield after extensive reflux in toluene. The reactions of 3 with PMe3 and P(OEt)(3) afforded bis-monodentate P-donor complexes (mu-pdt)[Fe(CO)(2)PR3][Fe(CO)(2)(PNP)] (PR3 = PMe3 5; P(OEt)(3), 7), respectively, which are formed via an associative PMe3 coordination reaction followed by an intramolecular CO-migration process from the Fe(CO)3 to the Fe(CO)(PNP) unit with concomitant opening of the Fe-PNP chelate ring. The PNP-monodentate complexes 5 and 7 were converted to a trisubstituted diiron complex (mu-pdt)(mu-PNP)[Fe(CO)PR3][Fe(CO)(2)] (PR3 = PMe3, 6; P(OEt)(3), 8) on release of 1 equiv CO when refluxing in toluene. Variable-temperature P-31 NMR spectra show that trisubstituted diiron complexes each exist as two configuration isomers in solution. All diiron dithiolate complexes obtained were characterized by MS, IR, NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction studies.

  • A pillar-array based 2-dimensional photonic crystal microcavity

    • Experimental results are presented for a high quality factor cavity based on pillar arrays. The cavityis formed from a square lattice of silicon pillars of finite height. The quality factor of the fundamental mode is about 7300 when the cavity is in air and 7800 when it is immersed in water.Since a pillar array has a large percent of connected void space and confines TM modes effectively,it has great promise for use in numerous areas including biochemical sensing and quantum cascade lasers.

  • Effects of Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury on Apolipoprotein M Expression in the Liver

    • The present study investigated the expression pattern of apolipoprotein M (apoM) mRNA in a rat model of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Animals were ischemic for I hour followed by various reperfusion times. As expected, serum alanine aminotransferase levels were significantly increased under IRI, which indicated the severity of liver injury. Hepatic mRNA levels of HSP70, which is the most common characterized protein within the family of heat-shock proteins (HSP), were significantly increased after 0.5 to 3 hours of IRI. Plasma Greactive protein, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and lipoprotein (a) levels were significantly increased after 1-hour ischemia followed by 0.5 to 3 hours of reperfusion. Interestingly, similar to HSP70, apoM mRNA levels in the liver were gradually increased after 0.5 to 3 hours of IRI, whereas it returned to a lower level after 6 or 24 hours of IRI, which indicated that hepatic apoM expression was significantly influenced by the acute phase of IRI. However, plasma apoM levels were not increased in parallel, even slightly decreasing after 0.5 or I hour of IRI. We concluded that apoM mRNA expression pattern, like HSP70, in the liver showed rapid, significant changes during hepatic local IRI.

  • Relationship between PTEN gene expression and differentiation of human glioma

    • Objective. To investigate the relationship between PTEN gene expression and differentiation of glioma. Material and methods. The quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method was applied to detect PTEN mRNA levels in glioma tissues. Tumor-adjacent normal tissues and benign brain tumors were used as controls. Relative PTEN mRNA levels were determined as the ratio of PTEN and GAPDH, which were correlated with the clinical pathological results. Results. PTEN mRNA levels were significantly lower in the glioma tissues than in the benign brain tumors and tumor-adjacent normal tissues, whereas there were no statistical differences between benign brain tumor and the tumor-adjacent normal tissues. According to the pathological examinations, PTEN mRNA levels were higher in the high differential glioma than the low differential glioma. Conclusions. PTEN gene expression was suppressed in the glioma, which is related to the clinical-pathological results. It is suggested that determination of PTEN mRNA levels by RT-PCR could be a novel marker of disease classification.
