    • This paper investigates the concept of share-driven scheduling of networks using servers with real-time properties. Share-driven scheduling provides fairness and bandwidth isolation between predictable as well as unpredictable streams of messages on the network. The need for this kind of scheduled real-time communication network is high in applications that have requirements on flexibility, both during development for assigning communication bandwidth to different applications, and during run-time to facilitate dynamic addition and removal of system components. We illustrate the share-driven scheduling concept by applying it to the popular controller area network (CAN). We propose a scheduling mechanism that we call simple server-scheduled CAN (S-3-CAN), for which we also present an associated timing analysis. Additionally, we present a variant of S'-CAN called periodic server-scheduled CAN (PS2-CAN), which for some network configurations gives lower worst-case response-times than S-3-CAN. Also for this improvement, a timing analysis is presented. Moreover, we use simulation to evaluate the timing performance of both S-3-CAN and PS2-CAN, comparing them with other scheduling mechanisms.

    • We report on a combined experimental and computational investigation on the synthesis and thorough characterization of the structure of perylene-functionalized polyisocyanides. Spectroscopic analyses and extensive molecular dynamics studies revealed a well defined 4, helix in which the perylene molecules form four "helter skelter-like" overlapping pathways along which excitons and electrons can rapidly migrate. The well-defined polymer scaffold stabilized by hydrogen bonding, to which the chromophores are attached, accounts for the precise architectural definition, and molecular stiffness observed for these molecules. Molecular-dynamics studies showed that the chirality present in these polymers is expressed in the formation of stable right-handed helices. The formation of chiral supramolecular structures is further supported by the measured and calculated bisignated Cotton effect. The structural definition of the chromophores aligned in one direction along the backbone is highlighted by the extremely efficient exciton migration rates and charge densities measured with Transient Absorption Spectroscopy.

  • Real time observation of ultrathin epitaxial oxide growth during alloy oxidation

    • We have studied the thermal oxidation of the intermetallic alloy CoGa in situ, in real time on the atomic scale, during the growth of an ultrathin, epitaxial Ga oxide layer. On the basis of an extended set of surface x-ray diffraction data, density functional theory calculations and core level spectroscopy data, we find that the oxide film consists of an oxygen ion double layer, which contains the basic building block of bulk beta- Ga2O3. The oxide formation takes place via the nucleation of two- dimensional, anisotropic oxide islands which laterally grow and coalesce. A dramatic increase of the oxide island size is observed for low O-2 pressures in the 10(-8) mbar regime, which we interpret as the onset of a step flow like growth mode. This allows us to conclude that thermal oxidation can be considered as a hetero- epitaxial growth process, that follows similar atomistic growth principles to molecular beam epitaxy. As a consequence, the structural perfection of the oxide layer can be tailored by the appropriate choice of oxygen pressure and temperature.
