  • Patient-reported signs of dampness at home may be a risk factor for chronic rhinosinusitis : A cross-sectional study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Allergy. - Hoboken : Wiley. - 0954-7894 .- 1365-2222. ; 47:11, s. 1383-1389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: An association between dampness at home and respiratory conditions has been convincingly demonstrated in children. Fewer studies have been performed in adults, and data are lacking for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). With a prevalence of 10.9% in Europe, CRS imposes a significant burden on quality of life, as well as economy.OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to study CRS and other respiratory conditions in relation to dampness at home in a representative sample of adults.METHODS: The Swedish GA2 LEN questionnaire was answered by 26 577 adults (16-75 years) and included questions on respiratory symptoms, smoking, education and environmental exposure. CRS was defined according to the EP3 OS criteria. Dampness was defined as reporting water damage, floor dampness or visible moulds in the home during the last 12 months. The dampness score was ranked from 0 to 3, counting the number of signs of dampness reported.RESULTS: Dampness at home was reported by 11.3% and was independently related to respiratory conditions after adjustment for demographic and socio-economic factors and smoking: CRS odds ratio (OR) 1.71; allergic rhinitis OR 1.24; current asthma OR 1.21; wheeze OR 1.37; nocturnal dyspnoea OR 1.80; nocturnal coughing OR 1.34; and chronic bronchitis OR 1.64. The risk of CRS and most of the other respiratory conditions was further elevated in subjects reporting multiple signs of dampness.CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study demonstrated an independent association between dampness at home and CRS in adults. The high burden of this and the other respiratory conditions studied is a strong argument in favour of countering indoor dampness by improving building standards.

  • Projectification in the Media Industries
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: G.F. Lowe & C. Brown (eds) Managing Media Firms and Industries. What’s So Special About Media Management?. - New York : Springer. - 9783319085142 ; , s. 367-382
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the death of the Hollywood studio system, projects have been the established way of producing content in a large part of the media industries. This includes sectors such as film and TV, advertising, electronic gaming, the recording industry, and book publishing. There seems to be an increasing trend of ‘projectification’ also in other parts of the media industries, for example, news media, which traditionally have not been organised according to a project logic. The aim of this chapter is to discuss the notion of projectification as it relates to the media industries and consider the implications this may have for media management. The chapter starts with an introduction to the general project management literature, describing its origins and development including the more recent discussion of projectification. It then turns to the media setting and discusses how content production is increasingly organised in projects and how this gives rise to what has been described as ‘project networks’ that evolve over time. Here the authors discuss what a project mode of organising means for the people set to manage media production, as well as for the individual media professional. The chapter ends with a discussion of what the trend of projectification in the media industries implies for the management of media—not only for the production of content but also for other, more strategic, endeavours.

  • Making it work in free agent work: The coping practices of Swedish freelance journalists
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 35:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of post-industrial work have shown how workers are increasingly shouldering the risk of and the responsibility for social protection, work shortages, professional training, and securing a stream of continuous incoming work. This study of Swedish freelance journalists examines how these free agents cope with a situation whereby the need exists to actively bear the full responsibility for attracting and contracting, producing, and billing their work as journalists. The empirical material shows how freelancers engage in various coping practices to secure both sufficient amounts of work and the accompanying economic compensation. Freelancers who “make it work” are often those managing to embed themselves in long-standing relationships with clients and colleagues, thus ensuring a long-term work horizon and a steady income. Even so, the inherent “responsibilization” of contemporary work is amplified and intensified by the freelance work mode. This study makes two contributions: Firstly, it provides knowledge of free agent work in a Swedish context, a national setting that is often presumed to be a “role model” for good working conditions. Secondly, it highlights the specifics of managing work that entails a continuous stream of sequential and parallel assignments of limited duration and the ongoing “employment management work” this entails as regards making sure assignments keep “coming in”.

  • Recycling Problems and Modernizing the Solution: Doing Institutional Maintenance Work on Swedish Public Service Television
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of management inquiry. - : SAGE Publications. - 1056-4926 .- 1552-6542. ; 28:1, s. 94-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates the role of history and heritage in institutional maintenance work. Based on a study of collaborative production of public service TV programs in Sweden, I analyze the program makers’ rhetorical work to construct and justify meanings and interpretations. By drawing on the old but often overlooked understanding that institutions are “permanent” solutions to “permanent” problems, I discuss what problems the program makers argue that public service TV solves in contemporary Sweden, and the work of rhetorically constructing and justifying these problems in relation to everyday practices of making programs. This study adds to our understanding of how actors that inhabit and enact an institution can use its history and legacy as an interpretative resource in their work to maintain the institution, and how this process may affect the meanings ascribed to the institution.
