  • Energy harvesting feasibility for safety belt buckle
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: 2024 IEEE Wireless Power Technology Conference and Expo (WPTCE). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9798350349139 ; , s. 409-413
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technology is to an increasing degree becoming spatially distributed, as Internet of Things or sensors in vehicles. With this comes challenges in power supply, with either cumbersome amounts of batteries or power cables. In this paper we examine the potential of energy harvesting for powering a safety sensor on a belt buckle. Concluding that that the vibrations on this site are impractically small, we propose an energy harvester for transducing human induced mechanical energy. The electromagnetic energy harvester converts vertical buckle-in/-out events into rotations of a circular array of magnets, varying the flux through a coil. Both measurements and simulations are performed, the later showing a potential energy of 4mJ for a single buckle-in event. © 2024 IEEE.

  • The Swedish furniture industry - a study of strategic groups and performance
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Wood Material Science & Engineering. - : TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1748-0272 .- 1748-0280. ; 17:6, s. 488-501
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scope of this article is a longitudinal strategic group study with a special focus on the strategic group-performance relationship. The empirical context is the Swedish Furniture Industry, a very heterogeneous industry well suited for this type of "middle-ground study" between industry and firm levels. The research questions are finding suitable strategic dimensions to use when in a next step splitting up into different strategic groups followed by an analysis of the strategic group-performance relationship. Finally, an explanatory approach is taken with the purpose of increasing our understanding of performance differences between strategic groups. The empirical investigation is a total population study of 143 companies (micro companies excluded) and the period of analysis is 2004 up to 2017. Empirical data consist of yearly income statements, public statistics, results from two questionnaires and multiple (firm) case descriptions. The explanatory part is of a qualitative nature and points out the major differences between the strategic groups regarding environmental forces and competitive advantage. Nine strategic groups are identified and stable performance differences between groups are noted which are mainly related to different demand conditions between three customer sectors - household, institutional and B2B - but also to the mix of micro product/customer segments within these sectors.

  • The Swedish wood manufacturing sector : findings from a contextually adapted structure-conduct-performance model
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Wood Material Science & Engineering. - : Taylor & Francis Ltd. - 1748-0272 .- 1748-0280. ; 17:6, s. 878-886
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scope of this article is an inter-industry study of the Swedish Wood Manufacturing Sector (WMS), examined from the perspective of the Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) paradigm in the theoretical field of Industrial Organization. The four research questions are: (1) identify the industries within the sector, (2) construct a contextually adapted SCP model and form the basis for hypotheses of relationships between the different variables in the model, (3) establish quantitative correlations between the variables, and finally (4) present a basically qualitative, explanatory interpretive analysis. The empirical investigation is a total population study of 311 firms. Nine industries are identified, and an SCP model is presented including four explanatory variables - exposure to international competition, value-added scope, domestic demand growth potential and (domestic industry) seller concentration - and two performance variables - industry profitability (ROA) and industry growth. The combined qualitative and quantitative explanatory analysis identifies some important relationships in the SCP model. The most prominent findings are the strong negative relationships between exposure to international competition and industry profitability and industry growth. Another finding is that strong positive relationships are found between the degree of value-added scope and industry profitability and industry growth.

  • Emerging stability of forest productivity by mixing two species buffers temperature destabilizing effect
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Ecology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0021-8901 .- 1365-2664. ; 59:11, s. 2730-2741
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasing disturbances in monocultures around the world are testimony to their instability under global change. Many studies have claimed that temporal stability of productivity increases with species richness, although the ecological fundamentals have mainly been investigated through diversity experiments. To adequately manage forest ecosystems, it is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding of the effect of mixing species on the temporal stability of productivity and the way in which it is influenced by climate conditions across large geographical areas. Here, we used a unique dataset of 261 stands combining pure and two-species mixtures of four relevant tree species over a wide range of climate conditions in Europe to examine the effect of species mixing on the level and temporal stability of productivity. Structural equation modelling was employed to further explore the direct and indirect influence of climate, overyielding, species asynchrony and additive effect (i.e. temporal stability expected from the species growth in monospecific stands) on temporal stability in mixed forests. We showed that by adding only one tree species to monocultures, the level (overyielding: +6%) and stability (temporal stability: +12%) of stand growth increased significantly. We identified the key effect of temperature on destabilizing stand growth, which may be mitigated by mixing species. We further confirmed asynchrony as the main driver of temporal stability in mixed stands, through both the additive effect and species interactions, which modify between-species asynchrony in mixtures in comparison to monocultures. Synthesis and applications. This study highlights the emergent properties associated with mixing two species, which result in resource efficient and temporally stable production systems. We reveal the negative impact of mean temperature on temporal stability of forest productivity and how the stabilizing effect of mixing two species can counterbalance this impact. The overyielding and temporal stability of growth addressed in this paper are essential for ecosystem services closely linked with the level and rhythm of forest growth. Our results underline that mixing two species can be a realistic and effective nature-based climate solution, which could contribute towards meeting EU climate target policies.

  • 3D imaging of human organs with micrometer resolution - applied to the endocrine pancreas
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Nature. - 2399-3642. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The possibility to quantitatively study specific molecular/cellular features of complete human organs with preserved spatial 3D context would have widespread implications for pre-clinical and clinical medicine. Whereas optical 3D imaging approaches have experienced a formidable revolution, they have remained limited due to current incapacities in obtaining specific labelling within large tissue volumes. We present a simple approach enabling reconstruction of antibody labeled cells within entire human organs with preserved organ context. We demonstrate the utility of the approach by providing volumetric data and 3D distribution of hundreds of thousands of islets of Langerhans within the human pancreas. By assessments of pancreata from non-diabetic and type 2 diabetic individuals, we display previously unrecognized features of the human islet mass distribution and pathology. As such, this method may contribute not only in unraveling new information of the pancreatic anatomy/pathophysiology, but it may be translated to essentially any antibody marker or organ system.

  • Mesoscopic 3D imaging of pancreatic cancer and Langerhans islets based on tissue autofluorescence
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : NATURE RESEARCH. - 2045-2322. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The possibility to assess pancreatic anatomy with microscopic resolution in three dimensions (3D) would significantly add to pathological analyses of disease processes. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has a bleak prognosis with over 90% of the patients dying within 5 years after diagnosis. Cure can be achieved by surgical resection, but the efficiency remains drearily low. Here we demonstrate a method that without prior immunohistochemical labelling provides insight into the 3D microenvironment and spread of PDAC and premalignant cysts in intact surgical biopsies. The method is based solely on the autofluorescent properties of the investigated tissues using optical projection tomography and/or light-sheet fluorescence microscopy. It does not interfere with subsequent histopathological analysis and may facilitate identification of tumor-free resection margins within hours. We further demonstrate how the developed approach can be used to assess individual volumes and numbers of the islets of Langerhans in unprecedently large biopsies of human pancreatic tissue, thus providing a new means by which remaining islet mass may be assessed in settings of diabetes. Generally, the method may provide a fast approach to provide new anatomical insight into pancreatic pathophysiology.

  • Topologically selective islet vulnerability and self-sustained downregulation of markers for β-cell maturity in streptozotocin-induced diabetes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mouse models of Streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetes represent the most widely used preclinical diabetes research systems. We applied state of the art optical imaging schemes, spanning from single islet resolution to the whole organ, providing a first longitudinal, 3D-spatial and quantitative account of β-cell mass (BCM) dynamics and islet longevity in STZ-treated mice. We demonstrate that STZ-induced β-cell destruction predominantly affects large islets in the pancreatic core. Further, we show that hyperglycemic STZ-treated mice still harbor a large pool of remaining β-cells but display pancreas-wide downregulation of glucose transporter type 2 (GLUT2). Islet gene expression studies confirmed this downregulation and revealed impaired β-cell maturity. Reversing hyperglycemia by islet transplantation partially restored the expression of markers for islet function, but not BCM. Jointly our results indicate that STZ-induced hyperglycemia results from β-cell dysfunction rather than β-cell ablation and that hyperglycemia in itself sustains a negative feedback loop restraining islet function recovery.

  • Project-based business models in the construction industry - key success factors for sustainable timber extension projects
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Construction Management and Economics. - : ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 0144-6193 .- 1466-433X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building construction has significant negative impacts on the environment. However, various measures can mitigate these impacts, including using wood as a building material and improving the building and construction process. The need to renovate and extend existing buildings increases with urbanization and a growing population. Wood is an attractive option for adding new floors to existing structures because of its superior strength-to-weight ratio, allowing for the potential to "build on top" of existing buildings. In order to achieve higher levels of sustainability in wood extension building projects, this study aimed to highlight the benefits of adopting a project-based business model approach by studying the technical, economic, social, and environmental attributes associated with timber building extension projects. Unlike the common firm-level business model approach, a project-based business model allows for a comprehensive view of the value creation, delivery, proposition, and capture of all the key actors involved in a construction project. The study results emphasize the success factors of an extension building project and conclude with critical factors related to the business model's resources, activities, and actors, which would enhance the outcomes of a wood extension project. Such factors relate to knowledge and experience derived from wood construction, and to a holistic perspective on planning, and involvement of all relevant actors from the design phase to project completion.

  • Challenges for growing SMEs : A managerial perspective
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of small business management (Print). - : Routledge. - 0047-2778 .- 1540-627X. ; 62:2, s. 700-723
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pursuit of growth is a key endeavor of all types of firms, but it is particularly important for SMEs. From a managerial perspective, growing SMEs face a wide range of challenges; this study proposes a broad framework that emphasizes not only the various types of managerial challenges, but also the importance of taking a balanced, broad approach to facing them. In a qualitative study of 44 Swedish SMEs, the researchers identify, map, and aggregate distinct challenges to SME growth, proposing three overarching themes - business model, leadership, and people. Multiple lower-level categories and individual challenges make up each of these themes suggesting that firms that seek to excel in growth should be aware of and manage all three themes in a balanced manner. This research provides insights into each theme and potential consequences for SMEs; it also offers an overarching, integrative perspective on SME growth challenges opening future research avenues.
