  • b-tagging in DELPHI at LEP
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 32:2, s. 185-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The standard method used for tagging b-hadrons in the DELPHI experiment at the CERN LEP Collider is discussed in detail. The main ingredient of b-tagging is the impact parameters of tracks, which relies mostly on the vertex detector. Additional information, such as the mass of particles associated to a secondary vertex, significantly improves the selection efficiency and the background suppression. The paper describes various discriminating variables used for the tagging and the procedure of their combination. In addition, applications of b-tagging to some physics analyses, which depend crucially on the performance and reliability of b-tagging, are described briefly.

  • Work stress and low sense of coherence is associated with type 2 diabetes in middle-aged Swedish women.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Care. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0149-5992 .- 1935-5548. ; 26:3, s. 719-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The risk of type 2 diabetes is suggested to be increased for individuals exposed to stress. We analyzed the association of work stress by high demands, low decision latitude, and job strain (combination of high demands and low decision latitude) with type 2 diabetes. We also studied low sense of coherence (SOC) (a factor for successful coping with stressors) in association with type 2 diabetes. Finally, we investigated the combination of SOC and demands or SOC and decision latitude in association with the disease. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 4821 healthy Swedish women (aged 35-56 years) residing in five municipalities in the Stockholm area. An oral glucose tolerance test identified 52 women with type 2 diabetes. Relative risks (RRs) with 95% CIs were estimated in a logistic multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: No association was found between high demands and type 2 diabetes (RR 1.1 [CI 0.5-2.2]). Low decision latitude was associated with type 2 diabetes with a RR of 2.2 (1.0-4.8). The RR of type 2 diabetes with low SOC was 3.7 (1.2-11.2). The combination of low SOC and low decision latitude was associated with type 2 diabetes with a RR of 2.6 (1.2-5.7). Homeostasis model assessment revealed an association of 4.2 (1.2-15.0) between low SOC and insulin resistance. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided new evidence that stress factors such as low decision latitude at work and low SOC were associated with type 2 diabetes in middle-aged Swedish women.

  • Cross-talk between Stat5b and estrogen receptor-alpha and -beta in mammary epithelial cells
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of molecular endocrinology. - : Bioscientifica. - 0952-5041 .- 1479-6813. ; 27:1, s. 93-106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Both 17beta-estradiol and prolactin play important roles in the mammary gland, raising the possibility of functional cross-talk between the two signaling pathways. Here, we demonstrate that estrogen receptor-alpha (ERalpha) and -beta (ERbeta) are both able to potentiate transcription from a Stat5-responsive promoter when activated by prolactin. Potentiation was observed not only in the presence of 17beta-estradiol, but also in the presence of anti-estrogens such as tamoxifen and ICI 182,780. The magnitude of the response was dependent on cell-type: in the HC11 mouse mammary epithelial cell line ERbeta potentiates transcription efficiently whereas ERalpha showed low activity. Conversely, in COS-7 cells, both estrogen receptors were active. We show that activation domains in the N-terminus (AF-1) and the C-terminus (AF-2) of the ERs are dispensable for potentiation. The effects are dependent on the presence of an intact DNA-binding/hinge domain, which we show is capable of interacting with Stat5b in vitro and in HC11 cell extracts. We conclude that ERalpha and ERbeta act as coactivators for Stat5b through a mechanism which is independent of AF-1 and AF-2.

  • C6 dipole-dipole dispersion coefficients for the n-alkanes : Test of an additivity procedure
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A. Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 1050-2947 .- 1094-1622. ; 69:4, s. 044701-1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dipole-dipole dispersion coefficients for pairs of n-alkane molecules with six or less carbon atoms were studied. The calculations were based on the dynamic polarizabilities of the molecules on the imaginary frequency axis. The dynamic polarizabilities in turn were obtained from Kohn-Sham density-functional theory polarization propagator calculations using the hybrid B3LYP exchange-correlation functional. The results for the static polarizabilities of each molecule were decomposed into bond polarizabilities and values for the polarizabilities of the C-H and C-C bonds.
