    • Privacy is a main concern for mobile network users, and there are many proposed enhancements for the protection of the long-Term subscription identifier. Some enhancements require asymmetric key operations, which increase both processing requirements and protocol message sizes. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no practical implementation feasibility study of these enhancements using commodity mobile devices. Neither is it clear whether the enhancements are sufficient. This paper highlights privacy weaknesses, when the long-Term subscription identifier is used in Paging procedures, and proposes new ways to resolve these. Further, the paper evaluates an Android implementation of one of the enhancements, which includes the asymmetric scheme Elliptic Curve Integrated Encryption Scheme (ECIES). We conclude that it is feasible to implement asymmetric encryption methods for the long-Term subscription identifier and that the highlighted privacy weaknesses can be efficiently countered. This removes another set of obstacles for realizing the protection in mobile network standards.

    • Software is today often composed of many sourced componets, which potentially contain security vulnerabilities, and therefore require testing before being integrated. Tools for automated test case generation, for example, based on white-box fuzzing, are beneficial for this testing task. Such tools generally explore limitations of the specific underlying techniques for solving problems related to, for example, constraint solving, symbolic execution, search heuristics and execution trace extraction. In this article we describe the design of OpenSAW, a more flexible general-purpose white-box fuzzing framework intended to encourage research on new techniques identifying security problems. In addition, we have formalized two unaddressed technical aspects and devised new algorithms for these. The first relates to generalizing and combining different program exploration strategies, and the second relates to prioritizing execution traces. We have evaluated OpenSAW using both in-house and external programs and identified several bugs.

  • The Governance of Multi-Use Platforms at Sea for Energy Production and Aquaculture: Challenges for Policy Makers in European Seas

    • European seas are encountering an upsurge in competing marine activities and infrastructures. Traditional exploitation such as fisheries, tourism, transportation, and oil production are accompanied by new sustainable economic activities such as offshore windfarms, aquaculture, and tidal and wave energy. One proposed solution to overcome possible competing claims at sea lies in combining these economic activities as part of Multi-Use Platforms at Sea (MUPS). MUPS can be understood as areas at sea, designated for a combination of activities, either completely integrated in a platform or in shared marine space. MUPS can potentially benefit from each other in terms of infrastructure, maintenance, etc. Developing MUPS in the marine environment demands adequate governance. In this article, we investigate four European sites to find out how governance arrangements may facilitate or complicate MUPs. In particular, we apply a framework specifying policy, economic, social, technical, environmental, and legal (PESTEL) factors to explore governance arrangements in four case study sites in different sea basins around Europe ( the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, and the Baltic Sea). The article concludes with policy recommendations on a governance regime for facilitating the development of MUPS in the future.

  • Impacts of carrier capture processes in the thermal quenching of photoluminescence in Al-N co-doped SiC

    • High concentrations of aluminum (Al) and nitrogen (N) dopants of 6H SiC have been achieved by a fast sublimation growth process. The Al-N co-doped 6H-SiC layer exhibits a strong light-blue photoluminescence emission at low temperatures due to emissions from D-I centers and donor acceptor pairs (DAP). The photoluminescence quenching mechanisms of those emissions are different. The decrease of free carrier capture cross-section as temperature increases according to the cascade capture process causes quenching of the photoluminescence emission form D-I centers. Emission from Al-N DAP centers exhibits an exponential quenching with activation energy of (95 +/- 10) meV. This is attributed to a competing hole capture by non-radiative defect in a multiphonon emission process.
