- This thesis consists of three self-contained essays on political economics.The first essay, The Effects on Political Rent-seeking of Allowing Campaign Contributions in Politics, presents a theoretical analysis of the effects on political rent-seeking of allowing campaign contributions in politics. I define rents as the difference between taxes and government spending. In a two-income group framework, I find that rents are higher when neither of the groups give campaign contributions, as compared to the case when both groups do. The mechanism behind this result is that candidates need campaign contributions in order to increase their probability of election success and voters will give campaign contributions to the candidate committed to the lowest level of rents. Rents are also found to be decreasing (increasing) in income inequality, when only the rich (poor) income group gives campaign contributions.The second essay, Government Inefficiency and Campaign Contributions, deals with campaign contributions and inefficiency in policy making. Intuitively, the interaction rests on a trade-off for political candidates between the need for campaign contributions (to win the election) and the effort associated with decreasing government inefficiency. Hence, voters will decrease the contributions to candidates likely to run a relatively less efficient policy. The main theoretical findings are that the inefficiency in the candidates' platforms is increasing in income inequality among voters, while their received campaign contributions are decreasing in income inequality. These predictions are empirically tested using US state level data for the period 1977-1995, and found to be statistically significant.The third essay, Explaining the Spending on Elderly Care in Swedish Municipalities Using Economic Theory, is, as indicated by the title, an empirical examination of local public spending in Sweden. This essay examines if the spending on elderly care in Swedish municipalities can be explained by the identity of the median voter using the voter characteristics (i) age, (ii) sex and (iii) income. The findings yield support for the median voter theory in the sense that the share of women in the population is found to negatively affect municipalities' spending on elderly care. On average, spending increases by 3-7 %, if the share of women in the population decreases by one standard deviation.

- This thesis is a contribution to a hitherto neglected area of research: The African Pentecostal Churches, that do not belong to those called African Indigenous Churches (AICs). It is a case study from the perspective of southern Burundi, the periphery of the ancient kingdom.The Pentecostal Movement in Burundi was born in the encounter between Swedish Pentecostal missionaries and the population in the southern part of the country. This study highlights what happened in that encounter.The thesis consists of six parts. The first is a survey of the Pentecostal Movement in Sweden. The diachronic structure of parts two to five focuses on the development within the Burundian Pentecostal Churches and their relationship to the Burundian society 1935-1960. In the sixth part the diachronic approach is augmented by structural analyses, showing how aspects in the Pentecostal Movement developed.The Pentecostal missionaries accepted in part the traditional world view, the belief in a spiritual world and non-rational explanations to misfortunes in life. They encouraged the Burundians to do spiritual experiences, and especially the baptism in the Holy Ghost. The Burundian evangelists and church elders played a decisive role. It was their task to reformulate the Pentecostal message in Kirundi, which was not spoken by the missionaries. They moulded the message into a Burundian Pentecostal message, at the same time respecting the teaching of the early missionaries.They succeeded in doing that so well that the Pentecostal Movement became a popular movement, in certain places the dominating Christian denomination, in spite of the parallel work done by the Catholic Church, encouraged and supported by the Belgian state.This thesis builds on material taken mainly from unpublished sources from archives in Burundi, Sweden, Rome, Great Britain and Denmark. These are supplemented by interviews, most of them made by the author.

- This paper presents a novel method for sequential immunofluorescence staining, which, in combination with 3D image registration and segmentation, can be used to increase the number of antigens that can be observed simultaneously in single cells in tissue sections. Visualization of more than one antigen by multicolor immunostaining is often desirable or even necessary, both for quantitative studies and to explore spatial relationships of functional significance. Sequential staining, meaning repeated application and removal of fluorescence markers, greatly increases the number of different antigens that can be visualized and quantified in single cells using digital imaging fluorescence microscopy. Quantification and efficient objective analysis of the image data requires digital image analysis. A method for 3D image registration combined with 2D and 3D segmentation and 4D extraction of data is described.
